Last Friday, State Rep. David McSweeney introduced a bill to allow people to complain about violations of the Open Meetings Act within sixty days after discovering the fault.

Opponents of the power plant proposed in Oakwood Hills filed such a complaint about a secret village board meeting that was held in the middle of 2013.

Current law, however, says such complaints must be filed within sixty days of the occurrence.

A summary of the proposed law follows:

Amends the Open Meetings Act. Provides that a request for review may be filed not later than 60 days after the alleged violation occurs or, if facts concerning the meeting are not discovered within the 60-day period, within 60 days of the discovery of the alleged violation (currently, within 60 days after the alleged violation). Effective immediately.

Monday State Representatives Jack Franks and Barb Wheeler signed on as co-sponsors.

How the minutes of the closed meeting reached the power plant opponents is unknown.
