A press release from State Rep. Mike Tryon:

Rep. Tryon to Host Diabetes Awareness Fair

CRYSTAL LAKE….. Residents from Kane and McHenry County are invited to join State Representative Mike Tryon (R-Crystal Lake) for a free Diabetes Awareness Fair on October 15 at Advocate Sherman Hospital.

The event, which will be held from 9:00 AM until noon in the 4th Floor Conference Room in the Sherman Medical Office Building, will feature approximately 20 booths offering free screenings and information.

“Visitors will be able to receive free blood glucose tests, free flu shots and free foot screenings at the fair,” said Tryon, who is successfully managing Type II diabetes. “Other vendors include drug, meter and pump companies and others who focus on helping people manage their Type I and Type II diabetes.”

Free refreshments and giveaways will also be available at the fair.

Type I diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. Type II diabetes, the most common form of diabetes, occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or when cells ignore insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy.

“Everyone should have a baseline blood glucose test to determine their risk for diabetes,” said Tryon. “With proper diet and exercise, most incidences of diabetes can be managed so that negative side effects can be avoided. I hope to see a great turn out at this upcoming event.”
