Light of Christ Church Packing Meals for Feed My Staving Children

A press release from Light of Christ Church:

Hundreds of Algonquin area volunteers to hand-pack 140,000 life-saving meals

[October 10, 2014] – For the first time ever on November 1st, 740 community volunteers in Algonquin and the surrounding area will join together through a partnership between Light of Christ Church and Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) to hand-pack 140,000 life-saving meals at a FMSC MobilePackTM event.

The MobilePack will take place at Westfield Community School, 2100 Sleepy Hollow Road, Algonquin, IL, from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Since 2008, Light of Christ Church has sent teams to volunteer at Feed My Starving Children’s production facilities in Aurora and Schaumburg to hand-pack meals.

Church volunteers signed a big banner saying, "100,000 Meals for Haiti."

Crystal Lake Methodist Church volunteers signed a big banner saying, “100,000 Meals for Haiti” after their food packing effort.

“We always had such a wonderful experience. It was time to bring this serving experience closer to our community in Algonquin and the surrounding area,” said Associate Pastor Sharon Rogers.

The church’s initial goal was 100,000 meals, requiring $25,000 for meal ingredients and 500 volunteers to hand-pack the meals.

The volunteer spots filled within days.

The goal was increased to 140,000 meals, with $31,000 and 740 volunteers needed.

The additional volunteer slots filled within 24 hours.

“The support by the community has been amazing,” said Senior Pastor Kendall Koenig.

“The $31,000 fundraising goal was a stretch for the congregation, but we held many unique fundraising events, including an online garage sale and selling firewood with the assistance of the congregation’s Boy Scout troop.

“The Preschool and Children’s Ministry raised over $2,150 by filling empty candy tubes with quarters. While area businesses and organizations are helping with donations, much of the funds are coming from individuals and families.”

“A key partner in this event has been the support of Community School District 300, which has allowed Light of Christ to rent space at the Westfield Community School for the MobilePack event,” said Event Leader Ken Arndt.

All volunteer slots are currently full. Community members can still support this MobilePack by making a donation or being part of the prayer team. Visit www.locchurch.com/fmsc to learn more.

  1. Meanwhile, in the United States (even right in McHenry County), school budgets are dripping red ink because of programs providing free breakfasts and free lunches to more students than you’d guess.
