One of the community influentials who reads McHenry County Blog sent the following Thanksgiving Day greeting that he received from McHenry County College President Vicky Smith:

Here’s the inside of the card:

Here’s how much the postage was:

48 cents postage was what this governmental body gave to the Post Office to send this card.

The message accompanying the copy of the card was,

“Here is an example of how MCC staff ‘wastes’ taxpayer dollars.

“Have no idea how many were sent out by MCC but the postage alone was a waste of my $.48.

“No idea either of card cost.”

Naturally, I have filed a Freedom of Information request to find the answers to this reader’s questions.

If you would like to comment on this expense or the levy that the Board of Trustees will probably pass, this Thursday night at 6:30 is the time. The place is in the MCC Board room on the upper level of the campus.

This is the night when taxpayers will learn whether the levy will remain flat or be increased. The swing vote is Mike Smith, newly-appointed to replace tax hawk Tom Wilbeck, who moved slightly out of the district.

  1. So exactly where in the budget is that expense hidden?
Property values are down, taxes are up, local community college sending Thanksgiving Day Card.
Did they already order Holiday Cards?
Does any donor or supporter really want a Thanksgiving Day card?
Who even sends Thanksgiving Day cards.
Never heard of such a thing.

  2. Absolutely astounded by the lack of professional ethics and complete ignorance of reality on the part of super rich Ms. Smith. I see people losing their homes and jobs. What is she seeing? I mean, really! What world is she living in?

  3. Ms. Smith and others involved in education live in the same place as the guy in the White House. They live in the land of ‘d-e-n-i-a-l’. While they get to ‘live it up’, We The People get to participate in the results of the “Murder of the Middle Class”. http://personalliberty.com/murder-middle-class/ “They claim higher education spending is “for the kids,” when the real objective is enriching teachers unions so they can funnel hundreds of millions of dollars back to Democratic politicians.”

  4. Since MCC President Vicky Smith’s name is the sole name on the MCC Thanksgiving Day Card, this could be construed as a Vicky Smith PR campaign.
What about all the other employees that make up MCC?
    – McHenry County College Faculty Association, IEA-NEA (faculty teacher union).
    – McHenry County College Staff Council, McHenry County Federation of Teachers Local 1642, IFT/AFT, AFL/CIO (support staff teacher union…not faculty).
    – McHenry County College Adjunct Faculty Association, IEA-NEA (part-time faculty teacher union).
    – Administration
    – Non union employees.
    – Board members.
    – students.
Nope, no mention of them, just Vicky.
So the teacher unions likely had nothing to do with this mailer.
By the way, teacher unions have heavily supported many Republicans such as Jim Thompson, Jim Edgar, and Kirk Dillard and those politicians have passed and voted for teacher union friendly legislation.
Although teacher union support does heavily weigh to Democrats overall.
Wonder what other government bodies send Thanksgiving Day cards.
Wonder how long MCC has been sending Thanksgiving Day cards.
Wonder for what other occasions MCC sends greeting cards.
This reminds me of the big ad in the Northwest Herald featuring Vicky Smith and MCC.

  5. What do teachers unions or Thanksgiving greeting cards have to do with public purposes?…”IL State Constitution ARTICLE VIII Section 1 a.) Public funds, property or credit shall be used only for public purposes”… Again, I ask how is this legal, moral or ethical?

  6. It’s not ethical anyway. I send Thanksgiving cards to my employees, and I pay for it including postage. Who is she thankful for? Donors? Vendors? Those that are both? Good lord I gotta get the hell out of IL!

  7. We’ll only have a real holiday when well-fed fatcats like her are axed.

  8. Wake up people it is about vicki smith not the taxpayers.

She could care less about you the taxpayers as long as she gets her $230,00 + salary and outrageous benefits.

Thank yourself and fellow taxpayers for the card you sent and paid for.

It sure didn’t cost her one thin dime.

Get her out of office as soon as possible or all of your money will go to her and her dreams.

  9. Some publications like this are produced in-house at MCC, often by graphic design students.

Of course, that does not explain the postage/mailing costs. I also cannot stop thinking the font used is an exact copy of Hallmark’s signature “H”: http://www.hallmark.com/

Seems like that could be a copyright violation….
