A press release from the Village of Lakewood:

Village of Lakewood Named Tree City USA

The Village of Lakewood has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to effective urban forest management.

Lakewood leafWe are very proud that this is the fourteenth year that Lakewood has received this national recognition.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the US Forest Service.

Lakewood achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements:

a tree board or department

  1. a community tree care ordinance
  2. an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita
  3. an Arbor Day
  4. observance and proclamation

Everyone benefits when elected officials, volunteers and committed citizens in communities like Lakewood make smart investments in urban forests,” said Matt Harris, Chief Executive of the Arbor Day Foundation.

“Trees bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economic, social and environmental benefits.

Cleaner air, improved storm water management, energy savings and increased property values and commercial activity are among the benefits enjoyed by Tree USA communities.
