Entrance to the 708 Mental Health Board building.

Found this on the agenda for the 708 Mental Health Board’s Ethics and Compliance Committee meeting on Tuesday, April 28th:

The Mental Health Board will provide each member of the Board of Directors with a capped $300.00 annual allowance to purchase “tickets” only to fundraisers held by MHB funded providers.

Ticket purchase are for MHB Board Members only and do not cover costs of guests. Reimbursements will be made for tickets upon MHB receipt of proof of purchase.

If attending a fundraiser, each MHB Board Member will wear an official MHB name badge in order to identify his or her position.

Also to be considered is this non-reimbursement alternative:

The Mental Health Board does not reimburse or purchase tickets to specific fundraising events for Board members or staff.

Should an agency provide ticket(s) at no charge, the Executive Director will notify Board Members and if no Board Member expresses interest in attending, the ticket(s) will be offered to staff members.

All Board members and employees are invited to attend all events at their own expense.

Neither is required to attend any events.

708 Board Members May Get $300 to Buy Tickets to Funded Fundraisers — 5 Comments

  1. Do you readers have any advice for the Board Members?

Ya pay your own way like everyone else.

  2. Thank you Cal for posting this!!

Your attention to what happens to our tax dollars is greatly appreciated!

This is another example of the ‘entitlement’ attitude of most people in the public sector.

It makes no difference if they are appointed, elected or directly employed by a government unit.

I read frequently about the ‘entitlement’ attitude of people in the U.S.A. but it all begins with those in government.

A classic example is the members of the McHenry County Board who use taxpayer dollars to fund their healthcare.

I suggest that people such as Mike Skala who, I am told, owns his own business, has the taxpayers paying for his health insurance.

Any Board member who has their healthcare paid for by the taxpayer, should be required by law to post their IRS tax return on-line.

It is difficult to get people to run for public office because the reputation of anyone who does, is painted with a very negative color due to items such as the one you have posted here.

  3. IF the McHenry County GOP was serious about saving the taxpayer money they would promote a referendum to repeal the 708 Board tax AND the Senior Citizen tax.

Then they would promote the privatization of Valley Hi.

Instead the fools propose Township consolidation which would by necessity increase the tax for taxpayers while further powering the growth of unions in the McHenry County Public sector!!

    January 27, 2015 ● 4:30 p.m.

Held at: Mental Health Board, 620 Dakota Street, Crystal Lake, IL 60012

Committee members present: Kathleen Kuchta, Cathy Ferguson, Don Larson, Sam Melei

Event Ticket Policy – For Discussion/For Recommendation

Kathleen began the discussion asking if the MHB should allow the funding to allow Board members to attend events.

Scott Block has not made revisions on this but has talked to three 708 Boards and none pay for this.

Cathy Garrey reminded the Board that if Board decided not to attend, the tickets went to staff.

The policy was changed to not include staff.

In the past there was representation at all events and if we don’t go to all it is difficult.

Cathy Ferguson understood the policy to be one Board member per agency event and doesn’t want to add to the workload of Board members.

Connee noted that buying tickets is good public relations.

Often the Board member spends more to help the agency.

Sam noted financially supporting each agency in equal amounts.

Cathy Garrey mentioned that the environment today is different and the Board does not want to be perceived as showing favoritism.

Scott Block added that it is important for the Board to be attending events but the public might not be in favor of spending public funds for events.

Sam suggested that this is a marketing tool and he could support a policy with an annual cap per agency.

Ray stated that through the allocations the Board provides support to the agency, he felt that the dditional ticket purchase for events is not needed.

Cathy Ferguson suggested volunteering at the events rather than paying for tickets.

Scott Block suggested he revise the policy based on the Board feedback tonight.

The Committee concurred that Scott Block revise and standardized the policy with a fixed amount to attend events per agency.

  5. It is expected of most boards that they attend events that are raising funds for their organization.

ANd that they pay for it.

I can’t believe that this is even a question.

WHy sit on the board if you can’t get behind it.
