Valley Hi, as regular readers will remember is sitting on a huge surplus.

There is debate on how much of the over $39 million ought to be called “surplus,” but for an subdivision of county government that is supposed to break even–and has been doing a good job doing so–a lot has to be considered excessive.
Valley Hi Cash on hand 2006-13Here is the referendum language approved by the voters:

“Shall McHenry County be authorized to levy and collect a tax at a
rate not to exceed .1% for the purpose of building, maintaining and
operating a county nursing home?” [Empahsis added.]

The nursing home spends and takes in something in the neighborhood of $10-11 million per year.

Administrator Thomas Annarella has done an excellent job on the financial end of things.
