Message of the Day – A Bratwurst

What you see below is how I like to eat bratwurst.

Bratwurst from the 2009 Old Capitol Art Fair.

Bratwurst from the 2009 Old Capitol Art Fair.

Well done, even burnt.

When we went to the Old Capitol Art Fair in May, no vendor was selling bratwurst, burn or otherwise.

That was really disappointing.

I usually cook my own.

The ones I buy from Kalck’s Butcher Shop in Downtown Crystal Lake.

But, while at the Art Fair, a bratwurst like you see above is my lunch of choice.

I had to settle for pulled pork this year.

  1. Pulled pork is tasty.

Be careful with burnt meet, Cal.

Once it gets to well-done, there is really no reason to continue to cook it.

At that point, the bacteria is certainly dead, and all you’re doing is exposing yourself to a higher risk of cancer. (Seriously, look it up.)

So it’s alright to get the pink out of it, but turning the whole thing black is not the best thing to do!

Plus it takes all the juice out of the meat.

  2. When you bite it it should moo or oink or it’s over done.

The hair still on it can be used to clean the pieces stuck between your teeth.

  3. As my Scoutmaster said after he burned the steaks the last night of the 1954 Valley Force Boy Scout Jamboree,

“Every diet needs a little charcoal.”
