County Board Considering Extra Pay for Vice Chairman Despite Negative State’s Attorney’s Opinon

There are so many good stories to be written about last Thursday’s Finance Committee meeting.

Let me do a little one first.

The Lake County State’s Attorney has ruled that its County Board’s Vice Chairman cannot receive extra pay, that he or she must be paid the same amount as any other County Board member.

The Vice Chairperson of the McHenry County Board gets $5,000 extra.

“If that’s illegal in Lake County, why is it legal in McHenry County?”

one might ask.

Finance Committee member Chuck Wheeler revealed that a McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Opinion “says we can’t compensate different board members at different salaries.”

Even so, the resolution presented to the Finance Committee has this sentence:

“The Vice-Chairman will receive a $5,000 stipend in addition to the Board Member salary.”

Yvonne Barnes, the current Vice Chairwoman, serves on the Finance Committee.

The resolution in question would have County Board members being paid $21,000 a year with the ability to turn down “medical, dental, and vision plans.”

  1. Is the County Board just like the Administrations in D.C. and Springfield?

Constitutions are just a piece of paper and only referred to when it serves political purpose?

Consider the ‘Fed’, Fed Dept. of Ed, lack of immigration law enforcement, HUD, etc. etc. etc.

Just look at how the Illinois Attorney General over the past two years has refused to act on nineteen Quo Warranto proceedings –

So, who cares that it is not legal / proper to pay the vice chair more?
