BARRINGTON HILLS, IL – Today, in the wake of Senator Dan Duffy’s announced retirement, Martin McLaughlin announced his candidacy for the 26th Illinois Senate District.

“It has been frustrating to watch Springfield grind to a halt because of an inability to accept needed spending reforms and enact a balanced budget. Meanwhile, here in my village, we’ve been able to work through our differences to cut spending and taxes.

It can be done, but you need strong, experienced leadership to make it happen, and that’s why I’ve decided to run for State Senate,” said McLaughlin.

McLaughlin was elected Village President of Barrington Hills in 2013, defeating the two-time incumbent by a margin of 60%-40% despite being outspent 5-to-1. In the years prior, the Village had spent recklessly, increasing expenditures 83.5% and hiking taxes a whopping 177%.

A conservative from the private sector, McLaughlin brought business principles to a bloated local government rife with cronyism.

Despite a 5-1 board opposed to his reform agenda, he successfully reduced spending, cut taxes, resolved previous legal disputes, consolidated departments, and put the village back on a path towards fiscal responsibility.

McLaughlin added: “With my public and private sector experience, I know I can be part of the solution in Springfield. I have experience working with diverse parties to collaborate and provide solutions to the public, and have proven my dedication to fiscally responsible principles in the face of opposition in my hometown.

“I am ready to go to Springfield and fight the entrenched powers on behalf of my neighbors in the 26th District.”

The owner and manager of a registered investment advisory firm for many years, McLaughlin has overseen the investment of pension assets, both public and private, through some of the most turbulent financial times in history.

As a named fiduciary on police, fire, and municipal pension plans, he has a unique background and experience working with leaders entrusted with public assets.

Martin has been married to his wife, Kathleen, for 24 years. They met at Elgin Academy, where Martin attended on scholarship. He then went on to work his way through college, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Illinois Wesleyan University. He and his wife are blessed with 5 daughters, aged 21 through 9. In his spare time, Martin enjoys spending time with his family, and volunteering with various community athletic organizations serving as a trustee at The Einstein Academy.

McLaughlin will be running against Dan McConchie, who announced his candidacy the day that Duffy announced his retirement.

Not mentioned in the press release, but of significance, is that McLaughlin beat multi-term Village President Bob Abboud for that office. Abboud ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat against Congressman Don Manzullo.

Martin McLaughlin Running for State Senate — 10 Comments

  1. Casey Urlacher, Mayor of Mettawa and brother of Bears legend Brian Urlacher, is rumored to be running as well.

  2. For those of you who do not know Marty, this guy is the real deal.

While I did not campaign for Marty during his election for Barrington Hills President but ran as Trustee as an independent, I have gotten to know Marty after the election and have witnessed first hand the wonderful things he is doing in Barrington Hills umwinding the corruption, waste and mismanagement wrought upon us by the prior administration.

By next year he will have reduced expenditures in Barrington Hills by more than 1 Million Dollars on an 8 Million Dollar Budget while raising the morale of the Police department and his volunteer boards.

Marty is a natural and a guy who actually does what he says . . . and does it with style and grace.

He is Lincolnesque in his ability to bring his rivals to the table under the same tent without compromising his principles and promises.

I cannot tell you the last time I have been a fan of any politician, local, state or national, but this guy is the real deal.

Come to Barrington Hills and see for yourself!

I will do all that I can to get Marty elected because Illinois desparately needs qualified individuals like him to bring sanity back to government.

Trust me, can’t do is not in this guys vocabulary; when you meet Marty and examine his record in Barrington Hills you will be sold.

  3. Marty has been a sea of fresh and clean air in Barrington Hills.

He withstands criticism and viscous verbal attacks with a smile and a slight smirk, and proceeds to do the right thing.

He has brought calm and sense and organization to our Village Hall.

He expresses his plans and opinions and treats all citizens with respect, no matter what their political bent or agenda.

I will miss his strong leadership once his term ends, and I will support his election for the State Senate, which certainly needs the proven leadership and advanced financial management skills that he possesses.

  4. Marty’s press release and the previous comments from Jim O’Donnell and David Stieper are no exaggerastion of this man’s performance and record as Village President of Barrington Hills.

When the election results were made official and Marty was, in fact, declared the new Village President, it was the first day of recovery from a Village decimated by egos, intolerance and special interests, all of which contributed to near financial crisis.

Marty stepped in, brought all sides to the table, and resolved critical situations.

His meetings are conducted with respect, patience, and courtesy, toward all parties, whether friend or foe.

He is smart, never smug, Marty will find solutions, unencumbered by political “ambitions”.

We’ll miss him as Village President, he has set a standard for leadership we need in Springfield.

    Good luck Marty

  5. Marty McLaughlin has been an excellent village president for Barrington Hills and has already fulfilled many, if not all, of his campaign goals.

He has streamlined our government and reduced spending.

He has the ability to look at problems from all sides and not be satisfied with the attitude “that’s the way we’ve always done it”.

Barrington Hills’ loss will be Springfield’s gain.

    Go Mart!

  6. I second the comments of David Stieper and Jim O’Donnell. Although I resigned my position as Committeeman in Algonquin Township after moving to Lake County a year ago, I continue to study very carefully the actions of elected officials in geographical areas that may affect my family and friends. Although other good candidates are coming to the fore in seeking election as State Senator, I believe Martin McLaughlin to be the best prepared to serve the 26th District and State of Illinois. I will be proud to have him represent me, as did Dan Duffy, as my State Senator. I ask all of my friends in McHenry County to lend their support and vote for Martin McLaughlin.

  7. I sent 2 completed petition pages to Marty’s home address this morning.

Everyone circulating sheets be sure to get them to the campaign soon.

The first day to file is Monday.

    Go Marty!

  8. In a climate where the electorate is clamoring for real substantive change at the national level, we have a superb and highly qualified candidate by the name of Martin J. McLaughlin running for the State Senate seat in the 26th district.

He lives up the true definition of a “public” servant.

As village president of Barrington Hills he has served with distinction by working on reducing spending over his several years on the job.

By taking these bold measures he is serious about bringing down the tax burden in the 26th district.

It is time to be politically correct and vote for a non politician who serves his constituents and understands the concerns and problems facing his neighbors and friends.

We would be so fortunate to have him serve alongside Governor Rauner to restore our financial crisis, and assist him with his turnaround agenda.

Electing Marty J. McLaughlin will finally restore common sense, and fiscal responsiblity to government.

He also pledges to make Illinois more attractive to businesses, and help seniors retire here with a good standard of living.

He would be such an extraordinary asset to help solve our problems in Springfield.

If you desire these goals, join me and then vote for Martin J. McLaughlin.
