Walkup Points to Gottemoller “Power Grab”

A press release from McHenry County Board Chairman candidate Mike Walkup:

IS JOE G. GUNNING FOR GOP?

JOE GOTTEMOLLER ally Rep. MIKE TRYON introduced a bill last week to try to “prevent a power grab” by prohibiting anyone who is a sitting county board member from running for County Board Chairman without giving up his or her county board seat.

I have commented on that extensively earlier.

However, MR. GOTTEMOLLER, who is currently a County Board Member while serving simultaneously as BOARD CHAIRMAN, but whose Board Member term doesn’t happen to be up for re-election this cycle, is ALSO RUNNING FOR GOP PRECINCT COMMITTEEMAN, where he is in a contested race with long time committeeman and current Township GOP Chairman, MIKE SHORTEN, NUNDA 15.

This the ballot for Republican Precinct Committeeman in Joe Gottemoller's Nunda 15 precinct.

This the ballot for Republican Precinct Committeeman in Joe Gottemoller’s Nunda 15 precinct.

WHY IS HE DOING THAT?

IS HE PLANNING ON RUNNING FOR GOP PARTY CHAIRMAN if he is successful?

Isn’t that the ULTIMATE POWER GRAB?

  1. Obviously you don’t understand the legislation…

it is to PREVENT one person from holding both the chairmanship of a County Board and a seat on the Board at the same time.

    It prevents double dipping.

    Taxpayers should be in favor.

Also, if you are a sitting county board member, you don’t have to resign your seat in order to run for County Chairmanship, but if you are sitting on the Board and then elected to the Chairmanship you would have to resign your Board seat before assuming the Chairmanship.

  2. Running for the board and chairman at the same time isn’t also a power grab?

  3. Can someone explain to me how having a Board Chairman who currently is also a voting Board Member and holds a seat for a board district, is different from having a Board Chairman who is directly elected county wide also hold a board seat and be able to vote on issues?

Is the difference in being elected county wide versus by the other Board Members?

    How does that change things?

If that is the case why then does the Tryon bill not disturb the REQUIREMENT that in counties of over 3 million population the directly elected Board Chairman HAS to also be a Board Member?

    TRYON BILL:

Statutes Amended In Order of Appearance

    55 ILCS 5/2-3007 from Ch. 34, par. 2-3007

    Synopsis As Introduced
Amends the Counties Code. Provides that the chairman of the county board of all counties under 3,000,000 population shall be elected as chairman without having been first elected to the county board (rather than counties with a population of 450,000 or less being able to elect a chairman from the members of the board or without having been a member of the board). Further provides that no person shall seek election to both the county board as a member and the county board chairman at the same election. Effective immediately.

    CURRENT STATUTE:

    55 ILCS 5/2-3007) (from Ch. 34, par. 2-3007)
Sec. 2-3007. Chairman of county board; election and term. Any county board when providing for the reapportionment of its county under this Division may provide that the chairman of the county board shall be elected by the voters of the county rather than by the members of the board. In that event, provision shall be made for the election throughout the county of the chairman of the county board, but in counties over 3,000,000 population no person may be elected to serve as such chairman who has not been elected as a county board member to serve during the same period as the term of office as chairman of the county board to which he seeks election.

How is it “double dipping” if the salary is otherwise the same?

    Facts are stubborn things.

I await any and all reasoned responses.

  4. Again: Current statute:

    Counties over 3 Million.

Chair MUST be Board Member concurrently Counties between 450,000 and 3 Million: Chair CANNOT be Board Member but votes to break ties.

Counties under 450,000 with Chair elected to 4 year term: Chair MAY or MAY NOT be Board Member. Does not vote unless
    Board Member;
Counties under 450,000 with Chair elected to 2 year term: Chair MUST be Board Member.

If anyone can divine any underlying logic to that, let me know., but that’s what it is.

  5. i will explain something. mike walkup lose both races, donna k can not even help him now

  6. Is Mike Walkup upset because Democrats can’t run for Republican Precinct Committeeman?

I mean, Mike Walkup “used to be” a Democrat before he “changed,” after all…

  7. Goat-Mauler wants to become the County Tyrant.

Do you want him to be?

    Walkup has matured.

  8. You mean Walkup has matured from a Democrat into a RINO?
