Springfield, IL…The Illinois House today approved House Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 5 (HJRCA 5) by a 95-10 vote. The measure eliminates the office of Lieutenant Governor starting in 2019.

According to the sponsor of the legislation, State Representative David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills), eliminating the office will save taxpayers approximately $1.6 million each year.

“The House vote proved today that we can put our money where our mouth is when it comes to government efficiency and saving taxpayer dollars,” Rep McSweeney said. “We need to reduce expenses wherever possible.”

The legislation will next be considered in Senate where it must pass with the support of 3/5ths of the chamber.

  1. That’s a start but really what about amending the state Constitution about balanced budgets and pension guarantee?

Put all three on the ballot, all three will pass.

  2. No more Lt. Govenor? We’re finally removing this vestigial organ of state government?

So Evelyn Sanguinetti will have to find a real job..?

  3. McSweeney just likes to see his name in the news.

He has done nothing in Springfield where is a budget where are pensions.

Put up or shut up McSweeney.

  4. Pablo (Brent Smith) needs to get a job and stop obsessing about Tirio.

  5. You know you have a problem when you can’t reform your biggest problem – pensions.

  6. Can they get it straight?

Where is the referendum on guaranteed pensions?

“A day after the Illinois Senate rejected a proposal to eliminate the state’s lieutenant governor post, the Illinois House did the opposite.”

“Under both plans, the attorney general would be next in line, and critics said installing a new governor who could be from a different party would go against voters’ wishes.”

Why has Mr. McSweeney not signed on to HJRCA009?

  7. HJRCA0009

The Illinois Legislature has until the end of this month to pass this.

    Why?

    The bill contains this:

“RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that there shall be submitted to the electors of the State for adoption or rejection at the general election next occurring at least 6 months after the adoption of this resolution a proposition to amend Section 5 of Article XIII of the Illinois Constitution as follows:”

    Vote for Reick.

aybe he can help make it happen.

Meanwhile the exodus of those who can afford to, continues.

Their homes are being filled with occupants who have significantly lower family incomes.
