Someone Should Invite Rauner to Talk about Property Taxes in McHenry County

That’s what popped into my head when I read about Governor Bruce Rauner’s schedule on Wednesday:

At Tuesday night’s McHenry County Board meeting Chairman Joe Gottemoller revealed that his real estate tax bill increased $1,477.

  1. Property taxes are not controlled by the GOV, but rather every local level of government.

    The same levels wherein 85% of property tax payers stay home on election day.

    Instead of asking the GOV, we need only ask ourselves why we have allowed our property taxes to escalate.

  2. What Rauner should do is put forward TWO Constitutional Amendments.

    The first would forbid property tax increases by any government in any County where the overall tax bill exceeds 2.5% of the value of the property.

    Massachusetts did this in 1980 and has thrived since then.

    The second would terminate all state pension plans.

    Those receiving pensions now would continue until their death.

    All others would receive a lump sum payment equal to the present value of their accumulated benefits.

    Going forward, all would be in a 401(k) plan.

    If he did this, any legislator who opposed the amendments would face the prospect of losing their seat.
