Northwest Herald’s Anemic Correction for Its Big Sunday Front Page Error

Sunday, the Northwest Herald continued its coverage of important local races.

Usually, photos of both candidates are place on the front page.

Sunday, the story was about the 63rd State Representative race to replace Jack Franks, who is stepping down after serving six more terms that the three he pledged to limit himself to.

The picture of Democrat John Bartman was on the right.

On the left should have been the photo of Republican Steve Reick.

Instead Republican State Senator Don McConchie’s image appeared.

The extent of the correction about not running Steve Reick's phto on the front page of the Northwest Herald next to his opponent John Bartman's.

Big mistake, probably the largest I have ever seen made in McHenry County’s paper of record.

Monday, I looked through the paper to find some admission that an error had been made.

The first time through, I saw nothing.

Then I started through again.

On the bottom of page 2 was three sentences telling of the error.

No color picture of Steve Reick, though.

But, the paper does send its regrets to readers.

Let’s compare the correction to the mistake.

I have placed the correction on top of the photo of State Senator Dan McConchie below:

Northwest Herald’s Anemic Correction for Its Big Sunday Front Page Error — 14 Comments

  1. The obscure correction is exactly what I thought would happen. It almost makes one wonder if the mistake was really an accident. Oops is so much easier to say than giving publicity to someone you oppose.

  2. Can an additional picture of the correction error be included in larger font?

    ++++++

Even worse than including the picture of Mr. McConchie instead of Mr. Reick, was omitting key points about Mr. Bartman:

    – current prevailing wage monitor for union affiliated organization.

    – Was number four on a ranked list sent by incumbent Democrat 63rd District State Representative Jack Franks in 2003 to a Rod Blagojevich aide requesting consideration for a job in a state agency which Mr. Bartman did receive in 2003.

    – former chair of McHenry County Democrat party.

    – former chair of the PAC of the McHenry County Democrat party.

Has to be the worst Kevin Craver article ever.

But, in Mr. Craver’s defense, did Mr. Bartman reveal the above information to Mr. Craver or the Northwest Herald?

Mr. Bartman’s campaign website does not state he is a current prevailing wage monitor for IIIFFC (the IIIFFC has changed the job title from compliance monitor to construction analyst during this campaign cycle).

Mr. Bartman’s campaign website does not state he is former chair of the McHenry County Democrat party.

Mr. Bartman’s campaign website does not mention he is former chair of the PAC of the McHenry County Democrat party.

Obviously Mr. Bartman’s campaign website does not mention he was number 4 on the priority ranked listing of people that Jack Franks requested be considered for a job in the Rod Blagojevich administration in 2003, and Mr. Bartman did receive a job at that requested state agency.

And Mr. Bartman’s campaign website obviously does not mention that many Democrat county party chairs received state jobs in the Blagojevich administration.

  3. Hah, MANY PEOPLE are SCREAMING
At Jack Franks & his minions to stop
TRESPASSING on their lawns to put
    UNAUTHORIZED campaign signs
    ALL OVER MCHENRY COUNTY.

I HOPE to see his name & picture on the
Front page of the NWH for TRESPASSING !

That would be a needed KARMA CORRECTION !

  4. As an old timer I recall when Jay Leno exposed the Herald’s staff’s stupidity on national TV once with a really hare-brained headline:

MARK R. MADLER, American Lawyer Media: “On Labor Day weekend in 1994, the newspaper I used to work for, the Northwest Herald, based in Crystal Lake (Illinois), ran a wire story about the controversy over the Smithsonian Institution’s planned exhibit on the dropping of the atomic bomb.

The copy editor wrote this as the headline:

‘Atomic Bombers Upset Over Enola Homosexual Exhibit.’

Yes, that person actually thought the ‘Gay’ in ‘Enola Gay’ referred to an alternative lifestyle.

The fallout lasted for several months.

I believe Jay Leno made mention of the headline.

The NWH moron turned out to be Mark Sweetwood, the news editor, who was cashiered after a string of similar idiocies.

  5. Well OMW , in this case your
    Picture would be more accurate.

Previously have said there is a special
Place in taxpayer HELL for Franks &
    Madigan for the financial nightmare
    They have created in Illinois.

  6. More stellar work by Kevin Craver, NWH’s long-time “Editor”…
