Democrats on the Crystal Lake Grade School Board

If you live in McHenry County Board District 3 or have read Democrat Diane Johnson’s campaign literature, you know she was on the Crystal Lake District 47 Elementary School Board for 18 years.

The back of the mailing compare Mike Walkup's cutting of taxes on the County Board with the tax hiking records of Democratic opponents Cathy Bergan Schmitdt and Diane Johnson.

The back of the mailing compare Mike Walkup’s cutting of taxes on the County Board with the tax hiking records of Democratic opponents Cathy Bergan Schmitdt and Diane Johnson.

I post this because there are commenters who claim that the Republican Party is responsible for McHenry County’s taxes being so high.

They want people to believe that Republicans control the school boards, which, of course, are the tax districts that are mostly responsible for our tax burden being so high.

Additional evidence of another Democrat on the District 47 Board came in a letter to the Northwest Herald from former Crystal Lake Grade School Board member Ruth Scifo.

When I saw her name at the bottom of the endorsement letter for Johnson, I remembered I had seen it somewhere before.

It was when I was looking at contributions to the McHenry County Democratic Central Committee, as you can see below:

Diane Johnson supporter and former Crystal Lake Grade School Board member gave McHenry County Democrats $250 this spring.

Diane Johnson supporter and former Crystal Lake Grade School Board member Ruth Scifo gave McHenry County Democrats $160 this spring.

Looking further, guess what else I found.

Ruth Scifo is an appointed Precinct Committeeman of the McHenry County Democratic Central Committee. She serves in Algonquin Township Precinct 50.

Now I’m not saying that there have not been Republicans who have served on school boards and raised taxes.

But I do suggest that this proves that all school board members are not Republicans.

  1. No question that Walkup is more conservative than many of the other candidates and many of the other “Republican” county board members.

At least the general public is becoming aware of what needs to be done to stop ever increasing local taxes.

  2. School board races are non-partisan.

The candidates do not run as a Republican or Democrat.

There are Republicans and Democrats on school boards.

So in terms of school board candidates and taxes, consider the individual first, party second.

    ++++++

There are many state and Federal laws, in addition to school board policy, that dictate how schools spend money.

So it is not just locally elected board members, but state an Federal politicians, that impact school spending.

By far the most significant influencer in public school spending is teacher unions.

Teacher unions are affiliated at the local, state, and Federal levels.

There is no effective taxpayer organization affiliated at the local, state, and Federal levels.

Comoare McHenry County Board to Cook County.

Cook County is dominated by Democrats.

It depends on the parcel of property, but there are areas of Cook County in far worse financial condition than McHenry County.

It is not just property taxes, but overall taxes, fees, debt, unfunded pensions and retiree healthcare, and past due bills that should be considered.

Susan had looked into Woodstock School Disrict as a watchdog.

Scott Coffey who sometimes comments on the blog is on the Cary Elementary School Board.

Chris Jenner was on the Cary Elementary school board and is now on the McHenry County College Board.

Steve Willson has researched school spending and is looking into schiol boards.

Those are some of the best resources for school boards in McHenry County.

  3. Of course school boards are stacked with Democrats. The teachers’ unions are the only major campaign contributors in these races. If we are to believe that campaign donations have any effect on the outcome of races, then you should expect that the favored candidates of the unions will be overwhelmingly represented on school boards.

  4. Diane Johnson was not only a big spender, but she did not support families or children.

They were nothing more that bartering chips to pass a referendum.

When the voters voted no on a referendum, they created Split shifts to hurt the families.
