Republicans on the McHenry County Board had the opportunity to get rid of the Valley Hi Nursing Home tax, but decided not to.
Monday the Valley Hi Fund had $41,183,130.81 in the bank.
The annual budget for the enterprise fund is about $11 million.
The entire County property tax levy for taxes paid this year was $86 million.
To eliminate the tax, the County Board would have had to levy nothing for Valley Hi for two years in a row.
Last year, Mike Walkup led the successful November fight to eliminate the $3 million slated to be levied for the nursing home.
Instead of zero, County Board Republicans voted to charge taxpayers $10,000.
By not zeroing out the tax for a second year in a row, they saved the taxing authority, approved by voter referendum in 2002.
Only two County Board members–Mike Wallkup and Chris Christensen–voted for elimination of Valley Hi tax.
The following voted to keep the tax:
- Michele Aavang
- Yvonne Barnes
- Sue Drafkorn
- Diane Evertsen
- Andrew Gasser
