5% Increase in Skinner Tax Bill for County Government

I got a preview of my tax bill and discovered that the amount going to McHenry County government this year is going from $795.10 to $834.49.

Detail of the Skinner family’s tax bill to be paid by June 6, 2017. It totals. The tax rate is 10.74%. This year’s bill is $9,988.26. Last year it was $9,855.38.

That’s a 4.2% increase.

Most of that came from the fourteen Republicans who voted last November to take most of the money the Valley Hi Nursing Home tax rate alloeed and levy it for purposes to be designated later.

Those fourteen Republicans names can be found below:

  • Michele Aavang
  • Sue Draffkorn
  • Joe Gottemoller
  • Jim Heisler
  • Tina Hill
  • John Jung
  • Don Kopsell
  • Donna Kurtz
  • Bob Martens
  • Mary McCann
  • Robert Nowak
  • Carolyn Schofield
  • Mike Skala
  • Larry Smith

Four of the fourteen votes were cast by members who were retiring or who were defeated in the 2016 election cycle.  Of the rest, all but the term of Mike Skala will expire next year.

If you would like to read the article about that meeting, you can find it here.

The basic argument was the “we have to take it or we lose it forever.”

Those offering the converse–“If we don’t take it, the taxpayers win forever”–was advanced by those voting against the tax hike:

  • Yvonne Barnes
  • Chris Christensen
  • Diane Evertsen
  • Andrew Gasser
  • John Hammerand
  • Michael Rein
  • Jeff Thorsen
  • Michael Walkup
  • Chuck Wheeler

Only Evertsen is no longer on the County Board.

Gasser is retiring to take the Algonquin Township Road Commissioner slot; Hammerand and Rein’s terms expire in 2018.

  1. Drafkorn, Martens and Schofield….. names that will live in infamy!

  2. Mark, Franks recently said the sky is blue.

I’m sure you’ll find a way to say he’s wrong.

  3. OMW you forget about Tina Hill and Anna May Miller

The only reason Miller didn’t vote in favor of raising our taxes is because she stopped attending meetings when she lost the primary!

  4. Please send a check in the amount of $132.88 payable to the sunshine blogger and prevent him from suffering the catastrophic effect of this enormous tax hike. 2018, are you here yet? Tic, tock, tic, tock…
