Serwatka Keeps Promise, Disolves TIF District, Property Tax Refunds Go Out to Lakewood Residents in Former TIF District

Lakewood President Paul Serwatka sent an email out announcing a property tax refund for those who were impacted with the now dissolved TIF district.  You can read about it below:

Friends and Neighbors,

On June 13 2017, as promised, the Lakewood Village Board dissolved Lakewood’s $66 Million TIF District, passing Ordinance No. 2017-18, an Ordinance “Dissolving the Special Tax Allocation Fund (TIF District) for the Redevelopment Project Area and Terminating the Designation of the Redevelopment Project Areas as a Redevelopment Project Area”.

With this TIF District and Special Tax Allocation Fund no longer in existence, residents and parcel owners from within this area are entitled to a refund on the portion of the property taxes they paid last year, that were allocated to this TIF District Fund.

These property tax refund checks will be mailed out tomorrow.

If you are among the residents and/or parcel owners within what was formerly this TIF District/Redevelopment Area, the amount of your refund will be the amount allocated toward “Lakewood TIF 2015” on your 2016 Real Estate Tax Bill.

A map illustrating the boundary lines of this TIF District/Redevelopment Area is seen below:

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

For a better Lakewood,
Paul Serwatka

  1. Property Tax Refund?

Now there’s something you don’t read about very often. Come to think of it, I can’t say I’ve ever heard of such a thing.

    Congrats to Lakewood!

  2. Property tax refund?

The money was siphoned from schools, county and township in exchange for future revenue from the TIF.

The money should have been sent to the government entities that should have received it.

Why should residents in the dissolved TIF receive what is essentially a discount on their tax bill?

    Is that even legal?

Absent the TIF, that money belongs to the government entities that agreed to give it to the TIF.

  4. How long till the northworst franks gets ahold of the story and jacko takes all the credit

  5. Hahah Schroeder!

I can see Franks working on trying to take credit for something that hotdog had nothing to do with. He does that quite often. What a ridiculous goon.

Good going, Lakewood Tax Fighters (real tax fighters)

  6. Thanks for being true to your word Paul!

I supported your bid to become village trustee in 2015 not really expecting much as I knew you were up against a hostile Board of six. I watched as you fought everyday and exposed the malfeasance of the past administration and board.

Again I supported your bid for village president in 2017 along with the rest of your Lakewood tax fighter group and while I was cautiously optimistic, I would be lying if I didn’t say I fully expected to be disappointed.

I now see that my trust was very well placed. I have never been more proud to have supported any political candidate for any office before. I think you have already done everything you promised you would. That is something that is seldom if ever done.

I do have one more request, perhaps you would consider “voluntarily” un-annexing those of us in this Tif area that were not so “voluntarily’ annexed in.

Godspeed to you and your team. Have a blessed New Year.

  7. X- a TIF tax was added to my property tax bill maybe not to yours !

So this is the RIGHT thing to do…
