Over 11% of Tested CL Liquor Sellers Found to Serve a Minor

A press release from the Crystal Lake Police Department:

Crystal Lake Police Conduct Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement Checks at Local
Retail Establishments

The Crystal Lake Police Department completed another round of Alcohol Compliance
Checks.

During the month of September, we examined 80 separate locations licensed to sell alcoholic beverages in Crystal Lake, including businesses that sell packaged alcoholic beverages and those that serve such beverages for on-site consumption.

In all of the 80 businesses examined, persons under the age of 21, under the guidance and supervision of Crystal Lake Detectives, entered and attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages.

With the exception of nine businesses, the clerks or business employees appropriately checked the purchaser’s identification, recognized them as being underage, and did not complete the sale.

The following businesses illegally sold alcohol to a minor:

  • Crystal Lake Brewing – 150 N Main Street
  • Coleman’s Bar and Grill – 7608 Virginia Road
  • Finn McCool’s – 72 N Williams Street
  • Krystal Thai – 230 W Virginia Street
  • Richard Walker’s Pancake House – 5680 Northwest Highway
  • CVS – 1305 Randall Road
  • Circle K – 220 W Virginia Street
  • 7 – Eleven – 60 W Terra Cotta Avenue
  • Carlos Mexican Grill 3 – 282 W Virginia Street

Crystal Lake officers cited the clerks/employees who completed the sale to a minor.

An Adjudication Hearing on this matter is scheduled for 8:30am on October 12, 2018, at the Crystal Lake Municipal Center, 100 West Woodstock Street.

Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death among adolescent Americans and teenage alcohol consumption is a leading contributing factor.

The Crystal Lake Police Department strives to develop partnerships with local merchants to help them achieve the goal of zero alcohol sales to minors.

The Crystal Lake Police Department conducts these Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement checks randomly throughout the year and we will continue to do so in the future.

  1. These are all well-known crooked operations on the part of the CLPD.

They typically take a 20 year old girl, a few weeks or months shy of her 21st birthday, who comes to their attention on some open liquor, liquor in car, or shoplifting nick of her own.

She’s not a minor, so Mommy and Daddy are never informed or notified, and the girl is told she can ‘get off’ on her charge(s) IF she cooperates in these sort of liquor store stings.

Not all dram shops are even tested, some are ‘favored’ for various reasons.

Some are ‘tested’ over and over and over, until some sales clerk goofs. You may ask yourself why this is so and why certain dram shops are targeted.

The girl is given a previously confiscated fake ID, or one is even made up for her!

She’s told to buy beer,or wine coolers — not hard stuff, and she should flirt with the sales clerk.

They even recommend how she should dress, and it isn’t for Sunday Church.

A small talk script is created for the occasion.

Sometimes the girl was given specific info to entice or smooth things over, like “Jerry said you’d know where the parties are.”

The girl is typically pretty, and, of course, very scared and easy to manipulate.

During the Nygren years, these stings (should be called entrapments) were called ‘Mousetrap operations’ or just ‘mousetraps.’

Like “Hey, Larry and Moe just mousetrapped J&B Liquors.”
