Two Days Before County Budget Rolllout and Bottom Line Still Missing

The McHenry County Board’s Finance Committee gathered for a long meeting on Tuesday, but a huge chunk of next year’s budget is still missing.

What will the levy be?

That’s the unanswered question.

Committee members were told that a paper copy will be put on their desks before Thursday night’s  7 PM Committee of the Whole meeting.

No word as to whether that document will be put online before the meeting.

Yvonne Barnes

My guess is that it will be kept secret from the public before the meeting.

Of interest to the public is that Yvonne Barnes suggested cutting the $79,670,599 tax levy by a million dollars.

Larry Smith made the motion.

For the property taxes paid this year, the levy was $71,839,960.22.

That was a 9.5% reduction from the year before (NOT the 11.2% that County Board Chairman Jack Franks incorrectly promoted).

Franks promoted in the Northwest Herald that he wanted to take this year’s tax levy 15% lower than last year’s.

That would require a tax levy $11,950,590 cut to $67,729,590, my calculator says.

  1. Will the Board members have to vote to see what’s in it?
