NWH Reveals Referendum Endorsements/Non-Endorsements

The new Editorial Board members at the Northwest Herald may be a bit different from those in past times.

I remember the days when the NWH endorsed every tax hike referendum on the ballot.

No longer.

The two tax hike referendums in McHenry–the McHenry High School District’sf or $44 million, plus interest, and the one for the city’s water park–received “No Endorsement.”

The referendum to consolidate the McHenry Township Road District into the Township in 2021 got a thumbs down.

The referendum to cut the size of the McHenry County Board and the one to limit Board members to eight years starting in 2022 (emphasis added), probably after all on the current County Board have retired to another warmer state, was also recommended.

The paper seems to have forgotten about the advisory referendum that the Marengo Park District has on the ballot.

Looking for it on the McHenry County Clerk’s web site and could not find a sample ballot without a Marengo address. Below is the summary of the question published by the McHenry Chronicle:

Do you support the reopening of the pool and, if so, would you approve a significant tax increase to your property taxes to acquire monies not to exceed $150,000 to pay the investigation of the current state of the pool?

Northwest Herald positions on referendum questions.

Finally found a Marengo address and pulled up a sample ballot. (I surely hope the next County Clerk can make it easier to find the sample ballot for all parts of the county.)

Here is what voters will see on the Marengo Park District ballot:

RE-OPENING THE POOL LOCATED WITHIN INDIAN
OAKS PARK OF THE MARENGO PARK DISTRICT WILL
REQUIRE A SIGNIFICANT PROPERTY TAX INCREASE IN
ORDER TO PAY THE COSTS OF INVESTIGATING THE
CURRENT STATE OF THE POOL, REPAIRING AND
REBUILDING THE POOL AND MAINTAINING IT IN THE
FUTURE.

SHOULD THE INVESTIGATION OF THE CURRENT STATE
OF THE POOL BE APPROVED, AN ADDITIONAL
SIGNIFICANT PROPERTY TAX INCREASE WILL BE
REQUIRED TO PAY FOR THE REBUILDING, REPAIRING
AND MAINTAINING OF THE POOL FOR THE FUTURE.
DO YOU SUPPORT INVESTIGATING THE RE-OPENING
OF THE POOL LOCATED WITHIN INDIAN OAKS PARK OF
THE MARENGO PARK DISTRICT, WHICH, IF RE-OPENED,
WILL REQUIRE A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THE
PROPERTY TAXES?

AND IF SO, WOULD YOU APPROVE A SIGNIFICANT
INCREASE TO YOUR PROPERTY TAXES TO ACQUIRE
MONIES NOT TO EXCEED $150,000 TO PAY FOR THE
INVESTIGATION OF THE RENT STATE OF THE
POOL

Did your eyes glaze over trying to read all the capital letters in which Mary McClellan the question?

I couldn’t wade through it.

Let’s hope the next County Clerk figures out that upper and lower case is the way to present referendum quesitons

  1. Thanks for pointing me to the page.

I note that the questions are in upper and lower case type.

Much easier to read than those printed on the ballot.
