30-Year Old Crystal Laker Arrested by McHenry Police for Drug-Induced Homicide

A press release from the McHenry Police Department:

MCHENRY POLICE ARREST-DRUG-INDUCED HOMICIDE

John Birk, Chief of Police of the McHenry Police Department, announced today the arrest of a male subject in connection with a death investigation that occurred in McHenry.

DERRICK J. BUTTRUM (age 30, DOB: 12/15/1988) of 331 W. Van Buren St., Crystal Lake, Illinois, was charged on 01/3/2019, by the McHenry Police Department.

At the time of the charge, Buttrum was out on bond from the McHenry County Correctional Facility on a related charge for possession of a controlled substance (heroin).

On June 28th, 2018, the McHenry Police Department and McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded to rescue call in the 4300 block of W. Main St., where a 40 year old unresponsive adult male victim had apparently overdosed on drugs.

First responders performed life saving measures, including the administration of Naloxone and CPR on the victim, without success.

The victim was identified as Richard T. Hyde of McHenry, Illinois.

Autopsy results confirmed that the victim’s death was attributed to the adverse effect of the combination of alprazolam, oxycodone and fentanyl.

The McHenry Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division, with the cooperation of the McHenry County Coroner’s Office and the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office, conducted an extensive investigation into this death.

Probable cause was established to show that Derrick J. Buttrum unlawfulldelivered the drugs that attributed to the victims death.

Derrick J. Buttrum was charged with

  • 3 Counts of DRUG-INDUCED HOMICIDE(Class X Felony)
  • 2 Count of UNLAWFUL DELIVERY OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE (Class 1 Felony)
  • 2 Counts of POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE (Class 4 Felony)

The McHenry Police Department is actively involved in combating the opioid crisis that is affecting our County, State and Nation.

  1. Would it not be for the McHenry County Coroner, Anne Majewski, the State’sAttorney would not have the evidence of the cause of the death. Bravo Anne!
