PACE Finally on Verge of Figuring Out Private Enterprise Has a Better Idea

Pace provides an opportunity for those without motor vehicles to get free food at Nunda Township on Fridays. But it didn’t show up one day.

It was former McHenry County Board member Nick Provenzano who advanced the suggestion that PACE supplement its dial-a-ride bus service with Uber.

He limited his idea to times when no PACE service was availalble.

That seemed too limited to me at the time.

Too many Dial-a-Ride buses were used for one person or family.

Now, the new head of PACE says he is willing to look at Uber.

PACE Finally on Verge of Figuring Out Private Enterprise Has a Better Idea — 7 Comments

  1. My calculations indicate the average Pace ride costd taxpayers about $17 versus $6 or $7 for a typical taxi ride or Uber ride.

And Pace services are not means-tested.

  2. I agree with the logic/economics on this and most other government programs.

After all, isn’t an elephant just a mouse built to government specifications?

Rather a moving target though, isn’t it, Steve?

Thinking the bulk of the costs of PACE service is in the infrastructure and wages, etc.

Would we really be better off with ridership down even lower and paying to have the equipment and manpower sitting idle.

Means/need based and Uber/Lyft/Taxi vouchers seem apropos for this neck of the woods.

  3. It was about 2015 when I heard that a single Pace ride average costs in the $50s.

Township Senior bus costs were mid $30s per ride.

I don’t think a Uber ride would cost $7 a ride for the distances the Pace and Township carry their rides.

Uber would be hire, but less still I’d think.

  4. Why does a government agency have engage in any kind of partnership with Uber?

    It doesn’t.

Uber already works to fill gaps in public transit.

It doesn’t need government assistance, supervisin, or coordination, and the taxpayers have no need to pay public agency employees to coordinate an already entirely functional private service.

I do believe the person who wrote that comment does vote.

If so, no wonder we have the government we do.

The transportation service referred to is the service provided not only to the public in general but also the handicapped and the indigent. Service greatly subsidized with your tax dollar.

Current rates: for the General Public $3.00 for the first five miles and $.25 for each additional; for Senior (60+) and Disabled $1.50 for the first five miles and $.25 for each additional.

PACE should be eliminated in this County and taxpayer funded transportation should be means tested.

The means testing should be performed by Townships which do verify legal immigrant status not by the County Housing Authority or the State which does not.

  6. Funny that the gentleman looking for a free ride to free food is a Packer’s fan.
