Keeping Up with Casten

I have never been terribly interested in national politics.

One can have so less of an impact on national, compared to local government.

So, I’m pleased that commenter “Former Quigley Supporter” offers the following on Sean Casten:

The Illinois General Assembly got its pay raise, and now congressional House Democrats are getting ready to do the same. A cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for members of Congress and their staffs is part of a spending package being prepared by House Democratic leadership:

Freshman Congressman Sean Casten, who represents the 6th congressional district which includes Algonquin Township in McHenry County, is quoted to defend the proposed pay raises:

“I want to be able to attract the best and brightest to this job, because that’s how I ran my company. When I ran my company, I paid a competitive wage. I didn’t tell people, come here because you’re so committed to our mission that you’re willing to, you know, sleep on your friend’s couch and work for peanuts. It’s horrible that we force people to do that,” Casten said.

And what’s worse for Casten, is in the same article, he is agreeing with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who strongly supports the pay raises:

“I think that all people in the country should get cost-of-living adjustments,” Ocasio-Cortez told The Hill. “I think the entire country should have the health care that we have. I think the entire country should have cost-of-living adjustments. Which is why I’m comfortable with it because I fight for those consistently across my platform.”

Congresswoman Underwood was not mentioned in this article, so her position on this legislation at the moment is unknown.

  1. Good!

    I am tired of working.

Put me on the dole, now, today.

  2. Thank you, Cal, for making my comment an article concerning Congressman Sean Casten, as well as the articles on Congresswoman Lauren Underwood. Given McHenry County was thrust into the nationwide battle for control of the House of Representatives last year, and will be in the middle of that fight again next year, I hope viewers of McHenry County Blog will receive more information in order to cast informed votes next year, both in the Republican primary, and in the General Election in the fall of 2020, for both the 6th and the 14th congressional districts.

Given what we just went through with the Illinois General Assembly and their end-of-session pay raise, don’t want to see the same happen in Congress. This is a time to let both Casten and Underwood hear from their constituents and oppose a congressional pay raise.

Keep up the great work, and may everyone find the information from McHenry County Blog informative and helpful.

  3. Given the disgusting pro-abortion legislation the Illinois General Assembly passed last week, all of us who care about the right-to-life received some good news, from a very unlikely source.

Democratic presidential front-runner, former Vice President Joe Biden has just reaffirmed his support for the Hyde Amendment (and set off a firestorm among the Democratic presidential candidates). You can read about Biden here:

Given Congressman Sean Casten co-sponsored legislation to repeal the Hyde amendment earlier this year (Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Woman Act), we should all be reminded where Casten’s stance is, and what he has said, from a Tweet dated March 21:

It would also reverse the Hyde Amendment – named after Henry Hyde who formerly represented the 6th District. The Hyde Amendment has blocked the use of federal funding for abortion services since 1976. Read my full statement: pic.twitter.com/OfcclTKRYz— Rep. Sean Casten (@RepCasten) March 21, 2019

Given Casten’s full statement, which you can read in the Twitter link, everyone needs to be reminded that the Hyde Amendment prevented federal funding for abortion-on-demand. Casten’s statement is much in line with what the Illinois General Assembly wants in its legislation.

And Casten is dead wrong, both his statement in his tweet, and his full statement! The Hyde Amendment did not deny federal funding for women for cases of rape, incest, and threat to the mother’s life. Casten calls the law restrictive to womens’ reproductive choice. The truth is American taxpayers do not foot the bill for women to terminate a pregnancy outside of the 3 humane exceptions allowed under the Hyde Amendment. The Hyde Amendment prohibits abortion-on-demand being funded by federal taxpayer dollars!

Over the years, many many people, including pro-choice supporters, do not want federal taxpayer monies to support abortion-on-demand. That is what the Hyde Amendment is about, and that is where Congressman Casten is completely wrong!

  4. Casten is the goofus who compared an abortion to a gall bladder operation. A majority of low information and ignorant voters elected this guy.

  5. Well that didn’t take long, Joe Biden now wants to repeal the Hyde Amendment, after facing too much pressure from pro-abortion proponents, as well as his rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination next year, he caved last night during a speech in Atlanta.

This gives new meaning to “D-Day”, as far as decision for Biden, which voters will remember him for, should he win the Democratic nomination.

Biden’s politically convenient flip-flop to allow government funding of abortion-on-demand shows he’s not cut out to be the President, and why President Trump will win a 2nd term next year.

It won’t be easy, but President Trump will prevail for this and many other reasons.

There are still many, across both political sides, who do not believe abortion should be funded with taxpayer dollars outside of the three exceptions.

ALL Republicans running for Congress next year, especially in the 6th and 14th districts, better come forward and be up front and honest if they will keep the Hyde Amendment in place.

  6. Regarding Joe Biden stance on government (we taxpayers) paying for abortion. Biden claims to be a Roman Catholic and attends Mass regularly. You have to wonder why the archbishop in charge of the church/diocese in his town does not kick him out of the parish, excommunicate him.
