Academic Study Finds Corruption Impedes Start-Ups

What does a corrupt political system cost?

An academic study by University of Illinois Nerissa Brown described in “Points and Figures” indicates it is quite h armful:

If low-profit firms face corruption on top of that, they already have a small piece of the profit pie – and that slice will surely be smaller if they have to grease the palms of rent-seeking public officials.

Article author Jeffrey Carter observes,

Further analysis in the paper suggests that corruption is particularly harmful to shareholder value when state governments are controlled by a single party, consistent with the notion that interparty competition deters corruption. [Em[phasis added.]

He continues,

Ask a small business person in Chicago or Illinois how many palms they grease directly or indirectly.

Nerissa Brown

Speaker of the House Democrat Michael Madigan‘s palms are so slick they could be ball bearings in an engine.  He’s made millions on commercial property tax appeals.  He has been Speaker for 41 years.  The corrupt Democratic Machine has run Chicago since the 1930’s.

Brown writes,

If you’re a start-up and you’re thinking about where to locate, “then the corruption culture is something you ought to take into consideration,” Brown said. “This is no different from a multinational corporation that should assess a country’s corruption culture before entering the market.”

  1. Nice articles but this is hardly new news.

Been going on in the city for years, it’s called aldermanic privilege.

    happens in McHenry County also.

  2. This anti-intellectual sunshine blog rejects any findings from any academic study from liberal Bolshevik brainwashing institutions. Stay tuned…tic, tock, tic, tock, tic, tock, meeeeeeoooooooowwwwwwwwwwww…

  3. What other possible explanation ?

Complete DEMOCRAT control over the state.

It’s a rather simple and obvious conclusion.

  4. I agree w/ Pokorny.

With a culture of corruption allowed by people like Kenneally, the same thing does occur in McHenry Co., and IL as a whole.

  5. Details Cal,

My family once tried to get an SBA loan and called the McHenry County Economic Development office to inquire.

After detailing the loan and procedures, the gentleman then proceeded to tell us that we needed to pay him a consulting fee for his services in getting the loan.

This done while being paid by the county as an employee.

  6. When did the McHenry County Economic Development office become a County controlled entity?

I cannot find where the current ‘project managers’ are paid directly by the county.

    Jim McConoughey
    President

    Jean Schober
    Vice President

    James Sitko
    Regional Project Manager

    Joe Kallenbach
    Regional Project Manager

  7. Fiscal responsibility never dies! As long as there is a family-values sunshine blog, seasoned with a “tiny bit of libertarianism”, insane obsession with other people’s private lives, and a daily downpour of vile racism and hatred toward labor unions and minorities, it is safe to say fiscal responsibility is here to stay for a long time. Stay tuned…tic, tock, tic, tock, tic, tock, meeeeeeoooooooowwwwwwwwwwww…

  8. Jean Schober …………. she makes crooks look good.

Should be jailbird, but in ILL she flies free and tweets about how good she is as shew fewathers her nest!

  9. Franks pays fallen Angel 3 cents a word to post drivel here.

    I skip him.

    He’s the biggest racist here.

  10. Genrad’s 1st line made me loose a mouthful of chocolate milk because I laughed so hard!

    LMAO!

  11. The Economic Development Council obtains grants from the County but it is a separate 501c3.

In 2017 it reported $369,928 in gross receipts (Form 990)

Pam Compata was paid $69,115 in salary and $1,961 in benefits.

Jean Schober was paid $73,874 in salary and $2,158 in benefits.

They had annual dinner expenses of $33,888.

It would appear that most every penny which flows through this group is a tax dolar.

If this group is being used to garner income for someone or some other business entity, I say shut it down.

  12. Steve’s comments were quite interesting and quite correct

The economic development office has always been politically supported and involved.

Check with your County board members and ask them to go back into the history of how many years the County board, with your tax money, has subsidized the McHenry County Economic Development office.

it goes way back when MCEDC insisted that they would be self-supporting within a year or two with the expectation of cities contributing.

Obviously the cities Villages of the county have their own entity to attract business.

The record of the McHenry County Economic Development office attracting large companies paying good wages is 0

Steve do you remember the name of the person who asked for a consulting fee?

    We’re his initials A.M.?

  13. From the Economic Development 2017 990:

“Documents are provided to the county board as part of our contract with the county. The public is represented by two permanent seats on our board of directors. Additionally, reports are submitted to the county on a regular basis. Our activities are overseen by the County’s finance and audit committee.”

Think there was any ‘collusion’ when the current Audit and Finance Chairman tried to get Huntley to approve his apartment complex?
