IL-14: Northwest Herald Reader Poll, Lauf Puts Underwood on “B Squad”, Lauf and Oberweis Extended Interviews, Rezin Brief Interview and Term Limits

This unscientific reader poll ran in the Northwest Herald Saturday, in the wake of McHenry County’s Catalina Lauf’s candidacy announcement, and asked readers’ preferences between Congresswoman Lauren Underwood and Republican primary candidates Lauf, and State Senators Jim Oberweis and Sue Rezin.

One must assume that if a poll participant was undecided, or support Republican candidates Anthony Catella, Ted Gradel, Danny Malouf (also of McHenry County) or James Marter, “other” was your only option.

The results of Saturday’s reader poll were obtained from Sunday’s print edition of the Northwest Herald.

Catalina Lauf Interview

Newly minted, and McHenry County’s newest and rising political star with a growing Twitter following at 11.2K (as of Midnight 8/26) from 2.5K on Friday, Congressional Candidate Catalina Lauf has her first extensive interview published late Sunday afternoon in The Daily Wire.

The extended interview highlights include Lauf’s placement of Congresswoman Lauren Underwood on the “B Squad”, her favorite personal activities include being a “history nerd” and “shooting guns” and more importantly to IL-14 voters, Catalina touches upon multiple issues she will be campaigning on in the primary campaign, and if she wins the primary, in the general, and include:

  • Inspiration for running for Congress
  • Immigration
  • Stop compromising values
  • Why younger voters and Latinos should vote Republican
  • The truth of the Democrats’ rhetoric

Her interview can be viewed here.

Jim Oberweis Interview Video

Last Wednesday (8/21), Jeff Berkowtiz sat down for an extended interview with State Senator Jim Oberweis, which was broadcast by Illinois Channel. While Oberweis talked little about the Republican primary race between him and the other Republican candidates, he did reveal he was recently overseas, this time in Belfast in the U.K. The interview, titled “Is Jim Oberweis the Key to a New Republican Majority?” is approximately 30 minutes long and can be watched or listened to here.

Sue Rezin Interview Video, Term Limits

On Republican Day (8/15) at the Illinois State Fair, State Senator Sue Rezin was interviewed at the fairgrounds by Illinois Channel. The interview is brief, about 6 1/2 minutes long and can be viewed here.

A previous article in late June on McHenry County Blog had stated Rezin’s position on term limits was unknown, since at that time, Rezin had not yet declared her candidacy for IL-14. Her campaign states Rezin has been a longtime supporter of term limits and she supports term limits in the upcoming congressional race, too.

IL-14: Northwest Herald Reader Poll, Lauf Puts Underwood on “B Squad”, Lauf and Oberweis Extended Interviews, Rezin Brief Interview and Term Limits — 25 Comments

  1. Lauf sure is obsessed with Ocasio-Cortez.

She might as well move to her district and actually run against her.

I think most local voters are going to want a congresswoman who actually deals with local issues, won’t they?

  2. The first, Thuper Duper Extra Scientific, Herald Gaslighting Poll, is up and running!

  3. It is more fake news.

Invalid poll, as it does not list more candidates.

The Northwest Herald has conducted many polls where they are wrong about the outcome. So their polls are meaningless.

    14th Congressional District Map (Illinois)

    elections.il.gov/Main/Publications.aspx > Publications > Maps > 2011 Congressional District 14

The 14th Congressional District includes most of McHenry County, with the exception of the southeast portion of the county.

Plus parts of Lake County, Kane County, DeKalb County, most of Kendall County, and parts of Will County.

The southeast portion of McHenry County is covered by the 6th Congressional District, currently represented by Democrat Sean Casten.

The maps are redrawn every 10 years, taking into account changes in the Decennial Census.

    The 2011 maps cover the 113th (Jan 2013 – Jan 2015) to 117th (Jan 2021 – Jan 2023) US Congress and the 98th (Jan 2013 – Jan 2015) to 102nd (Jan 2021 – Jan 2023) Illinois General Assembly.

  5. The local newspaper decided Catalina was more important than 4 other candidates (Marter, Catella, Malouf, and Gradel) approximately one day after they first reporting her candidacy by including her name but not theirs.

A bunch of big name national outlets are covering her, while they ignored the other six candidates most of whom have more money, more experience, and have been in the race longer.

And nobody thinks this is strange?

Why is Catalina being pushed on people in the “heartland” from people who live in the beltway?

What’s so special about her message?

There is nothing unique about being pro-cop, pro-military, pro-Trump, pro-capitalism, pro-America in the GOP.

There’s nothing unique about disliking AOC.

Other candidates check all those boxes too.

    What sets her apart?

It certainly isn’t experience, self-funding, or ties to local politics.

It’s almost like people in the beltway decided she was a good matchup against Underwood because of her identity (age, gender, race, looks).

Some of us vote for people based on what they look like and some of us look for other things.

  6. Whats there to take on ??? one latino to another latino and one who is a bartender, yeah that’s hard.

Absolutely no substance… another one not working for the Common Man of America.

  7. I’ve never heard of anyone characterizing the New York Post as being part of the Beltway.

  8. New York Post isn’t the only place covering her, Cal.

The point is that large outlets from outside the district, especially those who do NOT have a focus on the 14th district of Illinois, are promoting her. New York Post is owned by News Corp, the same company that owns Fox News.

I don’t see Fox News, Townhall, Biz Pac Review, PJ Media, Daily Wire, New York Post, and others writing gushing stories for the other 6 candidates.

And all these outlets wrote about her within days of each other, right after she announced she was running, while other candidates who have been in for MONTHS, some of who are independently wealthy and some who are state senators and former U.S. Senate and House of Representatives candidates, have gotten zero attention from these publications?

If you don’t see anything strange about this, we’ll just agree to disagree.

  9. Correcting, you are clearly very jealous of all the media attention Catalina is getting.

Her message is resonating not only in the 14th but across the country.

We need young people like her for the future.. why can’t you applaud that?

  10. Jen, I do not believe Correcting is jealous, but comes across as someone trying to figure out what is going on with the context of Catalina Lauf’s candidacy, and her steady rise to local and to a degree, national prominence.

One thing I agree with Correcting 100% is the reader poll of the Northwest Herald.

While I think the Herald reader poll limits the number of choices to 5, the choices should have been better, with comparing the “new kid on the block” with the incumbent.

Therefore, the choices in the poll should have been Lauren Underwood, Catalina Lauf, All Others, and Undecided/Don’t know.

That would have gotten the point of the poll across with the subject-matter/focus of the article being Catalina.

As for the media attention to Catalina compared with the other 6 candidates, I started to write that response and it was turning into an article, which I will write and publish later this week.

But something to remember is earlier this year, many were looking at the Democrats running for President and were looking to see who would be among a new generation of Democrats who will lead the nation and take the torch from previous generations of Democrats.

Remember Beto O’Rourke back in March, and “Betomania” sweeping the country?

A young, energetic campaigner at age 46.

He had impressive fundraising back in March, but then showed himself to be devoid of substance, and he faded by mid-spring.

Then there was Mayor Pete, age 37.

He surged throughout the spring right up to just before the first debate in June, when a police-shooting in South Bend, IN, where he is mayor forced him off the campaign trail and how he handled that crisis brought voters to think it was not yet his time at age 37, though he had a lot of money at the end of June, but he is back to single-digits in the polls.

You’ve had Corey Booker, who turns 50 this year, and Kirsten Gillibrand who turns 53 at the end of the year, Julian Castro and Kamala Harris had their moments, too, but have not caught fire.

And look who is leading in the presidential polls, the three septuagenarians of Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, who turned 70 at the end of June.

There is a desire to elect the right qualified candidate who is also younger than traditional candidates, and that is definitely going on in the IL-14 at this moment in late August. Will it continue as we get past Labor Day, or will Catalina go the way of Beto O’Rourke or Mayor Pete. Time will tell.

The rest of my observations will be in the upcoming article.

  11. Cal, I think Daily Wire is owned by Ben Shapiro.

Jen, you’re not addressing anything in a substantive manner, but I suspect you are either working for her campaign or are a friend of hers.

Why is she getting the media attention?

What about her message is so different than the other candidates that warrants all this attention while other candidates get ignored?

Liking small businesses and disliking AOC is pretty basic stuff in the GOP.

Her message would NOT be resonating across the country if national media outlets weren’t pushing her.

    That’s my point.

    Nobody would know she is.

And the framing of her candidacy is clearly built on identity politics, which many Republicans including Ben Shapiro say they reject.

Look at these headlines: “conservative latina rises”

That Daily Wire article mentions her age, race, and gender before her name!

My comments have nothing to do with jealousy.

I’m not running for that office and have not made up my mind on who to vote for.

It’s about fair coverage of the district’s candidates, a skepticism towards outsiders trying to shove a candidate down our throats, and preferring merit to affirmative action.

  12. “Whats there to take on ??? one latino to another latino and one who is a bartender, yeah that’s hard.”

Except she’s running against a nurse, not a bartender.

  13. Lauren Underwood, is a disgrace Joe!

Underwood, continues to open that big mouth of hers. Keep it up! The people get to know the true Lauren Underwood and it is severely lacking in professionalism and integrity. Everyday, Underwood continues to prove that she is incapable of being a Congressman.

People are lining up to take her job.

UNDERWOOD IS ONE TERM AND DONE!

  14. You keep saying that Dala, I keep asking you for examples and you just say it again.

It’s particularly ironic that you would complain about loud mouths. 😄

  15. The reason Ms. Lauf is receiving media attention is that she’s female, young (26), minority (Latina), photogenic, intelligent (graduated with an MCC associate degree at 17 & undergrad at Miami of OH, conservative (such people are generally thought of and stereotyped as liberal), and in a key nationwide Congressional race (IL-14th) for 2020 that was won by a female, young (32), minority (black), photogenic but not on par with Ms. Lauf, and intelligent (has a Masters degree from Johns Hopkins) Democrat candidate in 2018 who won in a district that historically votes Republican.

Such candidates receive a lot of media attention fueled in large part by the push for diversity that is ever present in public education, higher education, corporate, media, and elsewhere.

They hit a lot of the check boxes.

Given that one could also argue why she’s not receiving more media attention.

It’s up to the voters do educate themselves to make intelligent choices that reflect their beliefs, which is a time consuming process.

  16. Have not seen and heard Catalina speak but would guess from her photo that she has a very pleasant personality. Would be nice to see her in the U.S. Congress as a counter to the ladies from the Democrat Squad such as AOC. These ladies, as well as numerous other Democrats, always appear to be angry and have nasty expressions on their faces.

  17. “Have not seen and heard Catalina speak but would guess from her photo that she has a very pleasant personality.” More sound analysis and deep insight of politics from my Sociology and Political Science professor. Catalina, what about the slogan “Catalina y su personalidad te traera felicidad”? Stay tuned…tic, tock, tic, tock, tic, tock, meeeeeeoooooooowwwwwwwwwwww…

  18. Joe Kvidera- read the news reports. Underwood, has made the National News several times and not for good reasons. If I have to spell it out for, you maybe you don’t belong in politics.

  19. It is correct to state Catalina Lauf is basing her campaign on the popularity of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who is an excellent legislator and has gained national attention and support after her policy positions in favor of the American people. Until Lauf states her campaign will be fully funded by small dollar donations and will not accept money from Political Action Committees or corporations, she has no true moral standing to criticize or even mention Ocasio-Cortez, who represents a congressional district in the Bronx. Besides, I am also expecting Catalina Lauf to strongly condemn our president’s horrible immigration policies and rhetoric, particularly the practice of holding seekers of political asylum (a legal immigration procedure) in concentration camps. Her family background as the daughter of an immigrant, should compel her to do so. Stay tuned…tic, tock, tic, tock, tic, tock…

  20. Angel- your comments are laughable.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is not an excellent Legislator. She has garnered National Attention because of her arrogance and stupidity!

    Wake up Angel!

  21. AOC proves that she is as dumb as a rock with regard to using the term concentration camp. She speaks as if she had not completed or ever even attended high school. Back in 2012, Barack Hussein Obama, who was making a speech in Warsaw Poland stupidly referred to “Polish Death Camps” rather than a more correct term such as Nazi Death Camps in Poland.

AOC flippantly using the term concentration camp, wherein millions of Jews were killed by the Nazis, shows her ignorance of the history of the Nazis.

  22. The Nazi Death camps can’t be compared.

People were brought there with the purpose of ending their lives.

There are no concentration camps in the US.

The US is trying to deal with a difficult situation.

  23. “There are no concentration camps in the US. The US is trying to deal with a difficult situation”. Sunshine blogger, this is the perfect spot to insert recorded laughter audio. Stay tuned…tic, tock, tic, tock, tic, tock, tic, tock, tic, tock…
