Jim Oberweis: Rep. Lauren Underwood Puts Illegal Immigrants Over US Veterans
Sugar Grove, IL – State Sen. Jim Oberweis (R-Sugar Grove) says Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-14) is putting illegal immigrants before US military veterans by supporting a measure to fast-track the creation of an electronic medical record system for illegals.
The U.S. Border Patrol Medical Screening Standards Act mandates the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Patrol officials to implement an Electronic Health Records (EHR) system for all migrants attempting to enter the country at the US border.
H.R. 3525 passed the House with a vote of 230-184.
The bill requires the EHR to be implemented in a matter of months, which means illegal immigrants will have a benefit veterans and military personnel are not expected to receive for a long to come.
The Veterans Administration won’t have an EHR system for another nine years and the Department of Defense won’t have one for another five years.
“Why would we as a matter of policy take steps to create an electronic health record system for illegal immigrants before we provided these same benefits to the men and women who have protected our freedoms and way of life with their service in the military?”
Oberweis said. “Our veterans could really use an EHR system when it comes to their healthcare, and we should take care of their needs first.”
Oberweis said instead of spending money on an EHR system for illegal immigrants, Congress should be looking at ways to improve border security.
“If we prevented illegal crossings into the country in the first place, we would not have the need for an EHR system for illegal immigrants,” Oberweis. “We should be focused on border security first and foremost.”
