Rep. McSweeney Files Bill to Increase Prison Time for Corrupt General Assembly Members

Cary, IL – State Rep. David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills) says it is time to end political corruption in Illinois and he just filed legislation to finally get tough on General Assembly members who use their office to commit crimes.

“We need to get serious about the culture of corruption in Springfield,” McSweeney said.

“We need meaningful reforms with teeth to root out corruption and my legislation accomplishes that goal.”

According to the legislation,

“The court shall add 5 years of imprisonment to the sentence imposed upon a defendant who, at the time of the commission of the offense, was a member of the General Assembly and who is convicted of a felony relating to or arising out of or in connection with his or her service as a member of the General Assembly.”

“This legislation is simple.

“If you are a legislator and you commit a state felony offense in your official capacity as a legislator, we will add five years to your prison sentence,” McSweeney said.

“Tougher penalties on legislators who commit crimes will help stop corruption.

“This legislation is the kind of reform we need to finally change the culture in Illinois.”

McSweeney’s legislation is in response to the recent arrest of Rep. Luis Arroyo (D-Chicago) who was arrested on a federal bribery charge. Arroyo allegedly offered a State Senator a bribe of $2,500 per month in exchange for support for video gambling sweepstakes games legislation, which would benefit one of Arroyo’s lobbying clients.

McSweeney also strongly supports legislation that would prohibit members of the General Assembly from being lobbyists.

HB 3951 has been filed and awaits assignment to a legislative committee. Representatives Andrew Chesney and Blaine Wilhour are Chief Co-Sponsors of the measure.

  1. Problem is you’ll have to have an AG or State’s Attorney willing to prosecute!

  2. “We need to get serious about the culture of corruption in Springfield”

As long as Chicago is part of Illinois, good F-ing luck

  3. McSweeney, a wealthy man, cannot be bought.

Like Trump, that’s what makes him so dangerous to the political elites.

  4. McSween could make it a life sentence, but Governor Fatso will pardon.
