LITH Sanitary District Trustees Going for the Brass Ring of Health Insurance

If you are a taxpayer or pay to flush your toilet into the Lake in the Hills Sanitary District sewage plant, you might want to attend the Board’s meeting tonight.

Here is what might be of interest:

This group of patronage appointees, picked by McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks, propose allowing themselves to get health insurance in place of being paid $6,000 a year for a post most people would assume voluntary.

The proposal would allow Trustees to trade their $500 a month salaries for an estimated $1,900 a month in health care benefits.

Those familiar with income tax regulations will realize that changing from salary to fringe benefits will mean that Trustees will not be liable for income taxes after such a shift in compensation.

An open question is whether Trustees are authorized by state law to make such a change.

It will be interesting to hear LITH District Attorney (and Demcratic Party State Representtive) Ann Williams’ opinion.
