Christianity Today Magazine Says President Trump Should Be Removed

Franklin Graham Response: “Yes, Billy Graham founded Christianity Today; but no, he would not agree with their piece. He’d be disappointed.”

Late Thursday afternoon, Christianity Today magazine (CT), based in suburban Carol Stream and founded by Billy Graham, published an editorial written by editor-in-chief Mark Galli saying President Trump should be removed from office, though he was vague if it was to be through the Senate in an Impeachment trial, or by voters in November.

Throughout Thursday evening including during the Democratic presidential debate, CT’s editorial was trending around the country as major media outlets, including The Washington Post picked up this story.

Was this the beginning of the end for President Trump’s firewall of support in next year’s elections, evangelical Christians, who are the most devoted supporters of the President? Was God beginning to speak through His adopted children, Christ followers within a week of Christmas that God had rejected Donald Trump as President?

Or is it just a difference of opinion between Christ followers, as described in Scripture in Romans chapter 14, and the CT piece was simply the opinion of the editor? After reading Franklin Graham’s response to the CT editorial in social media, it appears to be the difference of opinion, and not an act of God the President should be removed.

Here’s an excerpt from Thursday’s editorial, which is clear to point out CT being consistent with its stance President Clinton should have been removed 21 years ago:

“We want CT to be a place that welcomes Christians from across the political spectrum, and reminds everyone that politics is not the end and purpose of our being. We take pride in the fact, for instance, that politics does not dominate our homepage.

“That said, we do feel it necessary from time to time to make our own opinions on political matters clear—always, as [Billy] Graham encouraged us, doing so with both conviction and love. We love and pray for our president, as we love and pray for leaders (as well as ordinary citizens) on both sides of the political aisle.

“Let’s grant this to the president: The Democrats have had it out for him from day one, and therefore nearly everything they do is under a cloud of partisan suspicion. This has led many to suspect not only motives but facts in these recent impeachment hearings. And, no, Mr. Trump did not have a serious opportunity to offer his side of the story in the House hearings on impeachment.

“But the facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral.”

The editorial went into a litany of areas where admittedly the President’s behavior is questionable, but here is the conclusion:

“Whether Mr. Trump should be removed from office by the Senate or by popular vote next election—that is a matter of prudential judgment. That he should be removed, we believe, is not a matter of partisan loyalties but loyalty to the Creator of the Ten Commandments.”

Note the words “prudential judgement”, instead of “divine judgement” or “providential judgement”, which begins to betray a difference of opinion instead of a divine pronouncement. My prayers were answered that at the moment, this is simply one Christ follower’s opinion.

Since the CT editorial invoked the name of CT founder Billy Graham twice, son Franklin Graham took to social media in response around 1:20AM this morning:

“Christianity Today magazine released an editorial saying President Trump should be removed from office & they invoked my father’s name, so I felt I should respond. Yes, Billy Graham founded Christianity Today; but no, he would not agree w/ their piece. He’d be disappointed.

“I hadn’t shared who my father Billy Graham voted for in 2016, but because of Christianity Today’s article, I felt it necessary to share now.

“My father knew Donald J. Trump, believed in him & voted for him. He believed Donald J. Trump was the man for this hour in history for our nation.”

So what is really going on here? Quite literally, God only knows.

Whether this difference of opinion with CT’s editorial was meant to reveal whom Billy Graham voted for in 2016 in order to reassure the President’s base of why Donald Trump is the President was the reason for CT’s editorial?

Maybe some were shaken in the unprecedented approval of the Articles of Impeachment, unprecedented because approval was by a straight party-line vote could be a reason for CT’s position to be known.

And now, even more unprecedented, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi did not finish the House’s responsibility with impeachment prior to the House going into Holiday recess.

The House of Representatives left town without formally naming Impeachment Managers, approving them in a House vote, which is the legal trigger for the Senate to take over.

And the House won’t be back in Washington until January 6.

We’ll find out as we cross into 2020 in a week and a half, but as this high profile difference of opinion played out, this might be more of a divine wake up call for Christ followers to be even more active in politics in 2020 than in the past.

And not just the election of the presidency, but in races up and down the ticket, and particularly close to home, the 6th and 14th congressional district races.

As stated above, God only knows, but since the President asked everyone to say a prayer going into Wednesday’s impeachment votes, this CT/Franklin Graham exchange may be the answer to those prayers when the President submitted to God publicly on Wednesday morning.

Something else to consider.

  1. If the churches want to be political maybe they should pay taxes.

  2. “Maybe some were shaken in the unprecedented approval of the Articles of Impeachment, unprecedented because approval was by a straight party-line vote could be a reason for CT’s position to be known.”

    1. Clinton’s impeachment was essentially straight party line vote, Lopez. You go crazy every time someone claims it’s bi-partisan if there are a couple deflections. You went so far to create some formula. Clinton’s impeachment was essentially partisan.

    2. The ONLY independent in Congress voted to impeach. He was once a Republican but he switched. Same thing happened with Van Drew. He just waited to switch until AFTER the vote. So really 1 Dem voted to not impeach and the only independant in Congress voted for impeachment.

You speak out of both sides, Lopez and you are a 100% political animal.

  3. How can anybody still be part of the Catholic church?

I mean, if Wal mart had thousands of cases of sex abuse against children, we would run then out of town.

Instead, people continue to attend and tithe at Catholic churches, it’s utterly insane.

  4. Christianity Today isn’t a church, it’s an evangelical Christian periodical.

  5. As cited in the Catechism (No. 2043), the Precepts of the Church maintain that each person has the duty to support the material needs of the Church. Of course a person fulfills this obligation according to his abilities.

The Code of Canon Law also states, “The Christian faithful are obliged to assist with the needs of the Church so that the Church has what is necessary for divine worship for apostolic works and works of charity end for the decent sustenance of ministers” (No. 222). However, the Church does not mandate a “tithe” as such of any percentage of income or other resource.

  6. He’ll be even more disappointed with the democratic nominee.

  7. The President who paid hush money to a porn star over an affair he had while his third wife nursed his fifth child and admitted on camera, in front of a live audience that he’s never asked God’s forgiveness for anything is trying to give a religion lecture to…Christianity Today

  8. The Roman Catholic Church does a lot of good which we shouldn’t allow a few bad Apples and child molester Homosexuals taint!

    Thank You Christianity Today…
…For finally speaking Truth to Power in the article entitled “Trump Must be Removed from Office”. As a born Catholic, alter boy and Disciple of Christ,I am grateful for the much need honestly and integrity from an Honorable source.

As quoted in the article “.. the facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral…. He must be removed from Office”

For honest Evangelicals, to finally have an epiphany, that our so-called President is a narcissistic amoral cretin, has been a long time coming. Yet some of my fellow Christians still possess a cult-like venal sycophancy in support of this lifelong pathological liar, con man, fraud, racist, rapist, sexual abuser, conspiracy theorist, tax-evading, money laundering, bank and insurance fraud swindler and treasonous (Putin’s Stooge) felon (AKA Individual One) who violates the ten Commandments on a daily basis. The continued support of what I call the Hypo-Christians and Evangeli-crits of this vile, despicable excuse for a human being proves that their own moral, ethical, legal, Constitutional and Christian depravity is worse than the Trumps himself. We can blame 20 plus years of Fox news lies and propaganda along with Televangelist Swindlers who are just as guilty of Gaslighting, conning and defrauding gullible simple minded Americans with demagoguery as Trump himself. These “Religious” voters must be excoriated, ridiculed and vanquished to the outskirts of Society just as we must vanquish the criminal immorality of Trump from the Whitehouse.

  10. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. In times of difficulty and confusion, there is nobody I need more than my irresponsible, fake-christian, cyber-evangelist. Where are those Bible quotations that make our sexual-assaulter-in-chief look like a heaven-sent Messiah? Where is the calling to overcome our fears? Please keep in mind nobody has done more for religion and christianity than tronald dump. Stay tuned…tic, tock, tic, tock, tic, tock, meeeeeeoooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww…

  11. The RC church has done a lot of good???

    Starting wars?

    Diddling with little boys?

Accumulating vast wealth while its people live in poverty?

Did I mention diddling with little boys?

It is a shameful, disgraceful, repugnant organization.

You are as sick as ever Lopez.

  12. Over and over, the left proves they do not understand why Donald Trump was elected.

When they figure it out they will hopefully move on.

  13. Heinrich, I believe I addressed the child molesting Homosexual and it’s Muslim countries that are involved in the ongoing Wars and terrorist activities.

Try to keep up and attend a Roman Catholic Church service as I haven’t witnessed or heard of anyone being sodomized or raped in one dummy!

  14. “Try to keep up and attend a Roman Catholic Church service as I haven’t witnessed or heard of anyone being sodomized or raped in one dummy!” Don’t you love the christian empathy displayed here by these republikkklan pseudo-christian fanatics? In other words, I haven’t seen it, so it must not be real…Stay tuned…tic, tock, tic, tock, tic, tock, meeeeeeoooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww…

  15. Angel, considering your hero’s part of an innocent child’s death it is probably best that you consider that before you make your infantile comments.

  16. Christianity Today is an ultra-leftist anti-Christian rag!

    Billy Graham’s kid:

“Christianity Today released an editorial stating that President Trump should be removed from office—and they invoked my father’s name (I suppose to try to bring legitimacy to their statements), so I feel it is important for me to respond. Yes, my father Billy Graham founded Christianity Today; but no, he would not agree with their opinion piece. In fact, he would be very disappointed. I have not previously shared who my father voted for in the past election, but because of this article, I feel it is necessary to share it now. My father knew Donald Trump, he believed in Donald Trump, and he voted for Donald Trump. He believed that Donald J. Trump was the man for this hour in history for our nation.
