Single Vehicle Fatal Crash Investigation

A 44-year-old Capron man has died and a 45-year-old Wonder Lake woman sustained serious injuries as a result of a single vehicle crash that occurred Saturday afternoon in the 16000 block of Nelson Road in unincorporated Woodstock.

On December 27, 2019 at 1:07 p.m., the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Woodstock Fire/Rescue District, responded to a single vehicle crash involving a 2009 Mitsubishi Galant that had crashed into a tree on Nelson Road, east of Deep Cut Road.

On scene investigation indicated the Mitsubishi had been traveling westbound on Nelson Road.

For unknown reasons the Mitsubishi drove into eastbound lane of traffic and then exited the roadway to the south where it struck a tree.

The driver, Shannon Velmont, 45 of Wonder Lake had to be extricated from the vehicle and was subsequently flown by helicopter to Javon Bea Hospital on Riverside in Rockford.

The passenger was pronounced deceased on scene.

Seat-belts were worn by both occupants and airbags deployed.

Velmont was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving on a revoked driver’s license, and for operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

The investigation continues by the McHenry County Coroner’s Office and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit.

  5. Yandex is right. That sharp corner has seen many fatal crashes over the years.

    Prairie burner is right. The roads are loaded with impaired drivers to varying degrees. Many are impaired by OTC drugs or valid Rx drugs.

    Ricardo is right that they’ll be more and more of them.
