Leslie Schermerhorn Defends Her Office of Regional Education, Says Elimination Would Save Local Taxpayers Only $70,000

Leslie Schermerhorn

A comment left by McHenry County Superintendent of Schools Leslie Schermerhorn:

“The McHenry County Regional Office runs on less than $70,000 of County funds.

The non-binding referendum is an attempt to eliminate a State Office that

  • has a Truancy Officer covering the entire county,
  • licenses educators,
  • inspects the 80+ school buildings for safety,
  • runs a school for students on the verge of expulsion,
  • provides substance abuse education to students, parents and educators,
  • performs background checks on everyone who works in and around a school,
  • provides professional development classes for educators,
  • trains bus drivers,
  • provides student GED transcripts, diplomas and work permits,
  • among other things.

“Eliminating or restructuring the Regional Office of Education will be a $70,000 savings to taxpayers while eliminating essential services provided by the Regional Office of Education to students, teachers, schools and parents.”

A minimal cost for a multitude of services.

  1. The office might only use $70k in county funds, but the rest of its budget comes from taxpayers somewhere.

The federal government and the states take money from the taxpayers and then rebate some of it to local units of government with a bunch of strings attached.

The local units of government rarely turn down the funds because it’s ‘free’ money.

    This is how government grows.

It would be far better to cut out the middlemen and allow local units of government to make more of their own decisions on how much to tax and spend.

Towns and counties controlled by blissninnies could tax themselves to the hilt and have a whole bunch of government services, and the rest of us could have the option of living in places with much lower taxes and less government spending.

  2. While on one hand I understand her position, on the other hand I question how effective she can be for any of the listed duties on that kind of budget.

The answer to that question will answer whether the role actually serves its intended purpose in practice, not just on paper.

Most of those duties likely are or should be the responsibility of the way-too-many school districts, leading to redundancy.

Ms. Schermerhorn, please educate us further.

  3. Her argument (only $70,000 County) is that it is ok to waste State taxpayer money?

Typically false logic illustrates why Illinois schools spend 150% per pupil for poorer scholastic results when compared to neighboring states.

Every service listed above will still be provided, just not by local duplicative software and administrators, right?

  4. Has a Truancy Officer covering the entire county.
-So…. Principals aren’t capable to do this themselves?

    Licenses educators
    -ISBE can already do that

Inspects the 80+ school buildings for safety.
-Again, Principals or Superintendents can’t do that? Also, how many hours are you doing that per year? If there are 260 working days per year, are you trying to say you spend 30% of your time inspecting schools – or a school a day? Unlikely.

Runs a school for students on the verge of expulsion.
-Woodstock High School manages this just fine themselves. Also, how hands on are you in between that and inspecting schools for safety?

Provides substance abuse education to students, parents and educators,
-Is that what you do the other 30% of your time when you aren’t inspecting schools for safety? 80 days safety; 80 days drug counseling. Got it…

Performs background checks on everyone who works in and around a school
-What a waste if we are paying you $100k a year to be a private eye?

Provides professional development classes for educators.
-How many days a year are you doing this?

    Trains bus drivers
    -Bull shit.

Provides student GED transcripts, diplomas and work permits.
    -Really?

    Among other things.

Someone FOIA for documentation on any of these activities.

Be ready for the response, “There are no documents available to satisfy this request,” because the role of Regional Superintendent is a WASTE OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS.

  5. Did she state the word “ONLY” ?

4Any savings would be something in this T.B. of tax monger state…. this is the attitude we need to get Rid of…Now…

  6. Can’t believe I’m saying this – Susan Handelsman is right.

  7. What is the annual cost of Leslie’s organization? How many employees full time and part time? What functions can/should ONLY be handled by a regional (County) organization? Which can or should be handled by the districts?

Illinois school districts are terribly inefficient regarding costs compared to the best States of the U.S.

Illinois school districts ought to be forced to get their costs and staff quantities PER PUPIL to equal or be less than the lowest cost States of the U.S.

  8. I don’t see one duty she claims that can’t be done in house within each district.

She is just an example of the remnants of the political dynasties of the past.

    Time to let go.

  9. Get her out. She can find a real job away from the government trough.

  10. This woman is worthless.

    The position is worthless.

    Get rid of her.
