Crystal Lake High School District Ransomware Email

Here is the email sent to parents and guardians about the ransomware attack on District 155:

Parents & Guardians,

On Friday, our network monitoring systems detected that a number of Windows computers had been infected with a type of virus known as “ransomware.”

The district technology team immediately took district servers offline in order to protect student data and other sensitive information.

This team also worked tirelessly throughout the weekend to analyze our systems and verify that the attackers did not reach servers that house confidential information.

After this analysis, we can confidently say that no student data or other sensitive information was accessed or compromised during this cyber attack.

Unfortunately, this virus disabled several staff computers and laptops.

Staff have received Chromebooks to continue with day-to-day classroom activities.

Until all Windows devices can be safely back online, we have asked staff and students to be flexible with their use of district technology in our buildings.

Because Chromebooks are generally not susceptible to viruses, your students can continue to use those to complete assignments.

I would like to commend our staff for their flexibility and perseverance to serve our students in 21st century classrooms, as they have not allowed this to impact instruction time.

Sincerely,
Steve Olson. Superintendent

  1. Oh your welcome from a Tax Payer who paid for all of this… just carry on…$$$$cause books are not necessary anymore… just to safe.

  2. Chrome books are very susceptible to hacking and viruses.

That’s why the US Army got rid of them.

  3. Trumpion is somewhat wrong.

Chrome books are rather easily hacked.

But Chromebooks are really safe from viruses.

Chromebooks also use the sandbox technique to prevent malware from fully infecting the computer.

Each application and web page is placed in a restricted environment so, if it comes with a virus or any other malicious software, it would be limited to that certain app or page and won’t spread to the other parts of the laptop.
