Dear [Kane County] League of Women Voters,
I appreciate the invitation to participate in your candidates’ forum. Of course, I am always interested in speaking with voters about my views and the stark differences between me and my opponent.
However, I will not be attending the forum on Feb. 4th. First, the fourth is a session day.
I will be in Springfield that day but even if I was not in Springfield, I would not attend your event because Feb. 4th is the State of the Union Address.
How can a civic-minded organization like the League of Women Voters host a forum on the day of the State of the Union address?
The State of the Union Address is a big part of our American governance and our American traditions.
It is a tradition that goes all the way back to our country’s first President.
To hold a forum on the day of the State of the Union Address is a blatant disregard for our nation’s storied history and very disrespectful to our President.
I am not surprised that my opponent would agree to attend this forum. Her hatred for our President is self-evident.
Personally, I think it is unconscionable for any Republican wanting to run for office to participate in a forum on the same night our President is delivering his State of the Union Address.
Students in our grade schools and high schools are encouraged to watch the State of the Union Address because of its monumental importance in our civic life.
What credibility would I have as an elected member of the General Assembly to go to schools and talk to students and encourage them to participate in their government by paying attention to things like the State of the Union Address if I am willing to forego these important events to serve my own campaign?
I will be leading by example on Feb. 4th. I will be watching the 45th President deliver the State of the Union Address.

Dear Mr. Skillicorn,
Thank you for your response.
I am sorry that you will be unable to participate in our candidate forum.
The dates were reserved last summer based on availability of the venue chosen.
There was no intent to compete with the State of the Union Address.
I also plan to watch the Address, so I will be recording it to watch later, as will many of the forum attendees.

Curious about the date(s) of this email exchange.
Since the exchange, the LWV cancelled the forum originally scheduled for tonight, as this was the one to be held in Carpentersville. Whether it was due to SOTU address, or one of several cancellations (Thursday congressional forum by LWV McHenry County) is unknown.
He should have just said he was in session. He sounds like a crybaby going on about Trump.
