Letter Carolyn Schofield Sent the NRA

From state Rep. candidate Carolyn Schofield:

January 30, 2020

National Rifle Association of America-

I know that I did not check all the boxes you were hoping for.

I would like you to understand that I am not a one-word type of person, and I feel all issues deserve thoughtful consideration and in depth understanding.

Although I do have a great deal of resources and understanding of your cause, I do not claim to have all the answers.

This is how I can best explain my position

The immediate focus should be placed on strengthening and enforcing existing laws.

Being proactive rather than reactive in approach by ensuring that guns remain out of the hands of convicted felons and mentally ill as well as the sale and trafficking of illegal guns are critical starting points.

Preventing gun violence should not be a controversial or partisan issue.

Bringing all sides together to start discussions on solutions to keeping people safe is fundamental to addressing gun violence.

I realize my opponent will check every box that you would like to see so I will not even try and pretend that I know as much about your cause as he doe

I am always willing to have a conversation and understand your positions.

I am known to successfully work together to find solutions. Without conversations and education there will be no progress.

Bans and removing rights from law abiding citizens are not the answer.

We cannot ignore the fact that we have laws being broken on a regular basis, and we have not been proactive in enforcing them.

If you would like someone to only carry your message and get nothing done then you may be interested in my opponent, but if you want someone to understand and articulate your message then I will be more effective.

Thank you-
Carolyn Schofield
Republican Candidate Illinois State Representative D66

  1. Thoughtfulness and nuance have no place in our political discourse.

  2. breaking laws everyday you mean like our politicians are doing on a daily basis?

Pot, Santuary city, gambling and on and on and on…

  3. Stating that you want to strengthen the laws already on the books means you want to pass more government overreach of laws. Illinois has an over abundance and over regulated of the 2nd Amendment Laws.

Interesting that Democrats want people that commit felony to be able to vote but they don’t want them to have their 2nd Amendment rights back to them.

They say felons are not mentally stable to have guns but are stable enough to vote.
