IL-06: Sean Casten on Twitter and Goes Political

Sean Casten

Congressman advocates lockdown and supports governors over the President

Early Sunday afternoon, Congressman Sean Casten took to Twitter from his political Twitter ID. The 14-part Twitter thread is transcribed below:

“Some thoughts about social media as we are all self-quarantined and watching the news.

“First, as I said in my tele-townhall yesterday, in the age of social media, we are all mini-news aggregators. What we post, what we share gets magnified in ways we don’t often appreciate. This puts the onus on all of us to be better editors.

“If you see something on social media that fits your pre-existing biases and you feel that little endorphin rush encouraging you to retweet or share, think twice! If you can’t independently confirm it is true, don’t share it.

“This is ESPECIALLY true when the President and FoxNews have more interest in propaganda than facts. We are at a moment where bad information will get people killed. Be responsible, even when those leaders and media outlets are not. Even more when they are not.

“Meanwhile though, we do have some really exceptional executive branch leaders in our states. [New York Governor] Andrew Cuomo is doing a great job, as is my Governor J.B. Pritzker. They are sharing information that is factual and necessary. Pay attention to them.

“In the White House, Tony Fauci is exceptional, but be aware that anyone in Trump’s orbit is under tremendous pressure not to contradict Dear Leader. So far he’s largely dodged that pressure, but his ability to speak necessary truths is constrained.

“And I get it – this may seem awkward. We have free speech. We want to be able to say whatever we want. But understand: what we do TODAY has a direct impact on how many people will be alive in June. Viral contagion does not discriminate in it’s geometric spread.

“We are overdue for a conversation about the accountability of social media firms to police content on their sites. We can’t yell fire in a crowded theater but we do still allow people to say things on social media that – in this moment – are much more deadly.

“This is not the time for that conversation, for obvious reasons. But all of us need to understand the consequences of this largely-unpoliced moment and act responsibly.

“And keep in mind: the geometric math of COVID-19 spread is a lot like the geometric math of social media. There’s a reason we call posts that blow up ‘viral’.

“In an earlier era, Churchill famously said that a lie can get halfway around the world before the truth gets its pants on. A lie on social media moves way faster.

“If people think that they should ignore Governors sharing facts at the expense of Presidents spouting lies because of the political party of those individuals, they are potentially killing people. Not intentionally of course, but that is the math of this moment.

“Yesterday, we had ~24,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases. On March 19, we had 12,000. March 17: 5,600. March 18: 2,800. Doubling every other day. That is what viral transmission looks like. If we don’t immediately lock ourselves down, we will have 1 million cases by April 1.

“But compare that to a zingy, MAGA, own-the-libs tweet from a public figure that can get millions of retweets in less than 24 hours. That is the danger at this moment. Science matters. Facts matter. PLEASE prioritize them over politics. And stay safe.”

  1. Sean says:

“This is ESPECIALLY true when the President and FoxNews have more interest in propaganda than facts.”

This guy per his statement above, AND previously equating an abortion to a gall bladder operation, is not fit to be a U.S. Representative. This poster would not even hire a guy of his record and statements to do menial tasks anywhere. He is much, much below the task of dog catcher. Actually, “Dog catchers” and those who do animal control are really nice people. Not something that should be said about a guy who flippantly equates the taking of a human life to a gall bladder operation. What a jerk.

    This guy Sean further says:

“We are at a moment where bad information will get people killed. Be responsible, even when those leaders and media outlets are not.We are at a moment where bad information will get people killed. Be responsible, even when those leaders and media outlets are not.”

How reckless are these statements. The Trump Administration is open and accessible as PROVEN by daily updates from TOP leaders in medicine and science who give daily updates on the situation from the White House. All of these leaders THEN answer numerous questions from the media every single day.

This guy Sean will easily defeated by Jeanne Ives in November.

  2. Trump is a liar and even his most deluded supporters know this.

What happened to the GOP to fall this low?

  3. Pritzker and LightLoafers should quit playing politics with peoples lives by playing hardball with the Fed govt—starting with sanctuary state/city nonsense—you dont think that doesnt come to play here? Think again—CA and NY are the same but their local leaders arent fighting the Feds like Jelly Belly and LightLoafers are.

Casten you are losing voters by the minute with this stance.

Jelly belly kept the polls open, then pulled the plug the next day…there’s your Liar Sean.

Fatso had no plans for how to help suddenly unemployed, he just ran and pulled the plug now cries the Feds wont lead for him.

Be a team player Fatman or step down.

    You too Larry Lightfoot.

    You’re not leading, you’re whining.

  4. I’m starting to hate Republicans because of the venomous crap that comes out of their mouths!

Don’t worry Mr. Casten, we do like you in DuPage county!

  5. While all you nitwits were arguing over nonsense like politics the country was sacked. We are in a Bolshevik takeover and we are witnessing the beast system rising. I would be angry that no one would listen to my warnings, but it is written that this is how it goes down. Hug your neighbors.

  6. In six weeks, 95% of Illinois GDP will be Public Sector Salary’s and Pensions.

And this F’wit is worried about Twitter Civility?

  7. Someone wants to hate Republicans. Interesting that top politicians of the Democrat Party promote hate and divisiveness. Some examples:

Earlier this month, top Democrat Senator from NY, Chuck Schumer, made threats against Justices of the Supreme Court while standing on the steps of the Supreme Court building in Washington DC. Amazingly, he was not arrested nor asked to resign by other members of his Democrat Party.

A while back, top Democrat U.S. Representative, Maxine Waters, called on Democrat supporters to harass members of Trump’s Administration and Republicans. She said: “If you see anybody from that cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd, and you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere.” What followed were crazed supporters of the Democrat Party harassing women Cabinet members of the Trump Administration and Republicans. Waters did a very dangerous and reckless action that could have resulted in bodily harm to innocent individuals.

  8. Bred you are right.

Soon these wrongs will be righted by God Almighty.

  9. I support a lockdown too……. but for communists like Casten and Pritzker.

  10. Casten tried to mainstream insanity, homosexuality, anti-Christian bigotry and open-borders suicide.

That’s why he needs to be caged.

    He’s a public danger.
