Echos of the Fight against HIV/AIDS

From Morning Brew on Monday:

Contact Tracing

Last Friday, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker detailed a “powerful tool” to stop the coronavirus’s spread: contact tracing.

How it works: When a patient tests positive, you make a list of everyone they came in close contact with. Then, you find those people and make sure they self-isolate before infecting others.

That sounds straightforward, but contact tracing a new patient typically takes three days, according to Stat, which is “an insurmountable hurdle in the U.S., with its low numbers of public health workers and tens of thousands of new cases every day.”

It’s worked elsewhere

South Korea used high-tech contact tracing to tame its outbreak. The government compiled GPS data, credit card swipes, and other info into a public log showing where COVID-19 patients had traveled.

  • Some countries (including the U.S.) are trying other methods, including looking at smartphone location data and developing Bluetooth systems that provide warnings if you’ve crossed paths with an infected person.

The hangup: Despite its widespread use in places like Singapore, contact tracing has raised concerns about privacy and governments following citizens’ whereabouts. Still, it’s a term you’ll be hearing a lot more of in the coming weeks.

During the laste 1980’s and early 1990’s I was intensely involved with what State Rep, Penny Pullen, who served on President Reagan’s HIV/AIDS Commission, called the Public Protection side of the issue.

Contract tracing was originated during the 1930’s by FDR’s Surgeon General to combat syphilis.

That was before penicillin.

The homosexual community ferociously fought this public health tool.

It was if HIV were a politically-protected disease…even though, like syphilis, there was not cure.

The commentary after “The Hangup” above echo the objections of the 1980’s and 1990’s.

I do not remember Dr. Anthony Fauci promoting contact tracing vigorously, if at all, back then.

Since the process is completely voluntary–at least in the USA–I didn’t understand the objections back then or now.

  1. Fauci is a fraud.

Why’d the Deep State keep him in his posts even though he’s approaching 80?

  2. For cris sakes Baker, I already found your patient zero!

  3. Contact tracing is a good idea and should be implemented everywhere. To be as effective as possible, the person who just found out by test he/she is positive would have to be interviewed asap. The shortfalls would be when “positive” persons said they were grocery shopping recently and one or more other shoppers got too close. Don’t know who they were.

Still not clear if a person with the virus and shopping but not coughing can transmit the virus by just breathing. Example being at checkout counter if said person is in one spot by register for a couple of minutes and you are 6 feet behind. That person leaves and you step into same floor spot. Did that person leave an invisible cloud of carbon dioxide plus some virus particles that you step into and breathe?

  4. Really bred? really? You are part of the brown shirt Nazi’s that belong to 1933. You are brainwashed loon to cheer on your new world order incarceration. You STILL believe in the lie that took down the WHOLE WORLD!

  5. This is why you all lost your jobs, lost your lives and are hiding under your beds. The biggest fake ever perpetrated on mankind. You are all a bunch of weenies and aren’t smart enough to go outside and stand up to the evil that is enslaving the whole world over the great delusion! Jesus warned you and you still didn’t see it coming or even when it was shown to you. Keep making up excuses for why you are afraid and hiding and letting men who wear socks dictate this tyranny to you. You are all empty vessels letting someone else control you because you refused to listen. Enjoy your tyranny. Jesus will be back shortly.

  6. That just might be the most understated criticism I’ve ever received.

  7. Interesting video.

To understand what is occurring you would have to understand triage and other simple factors concerning a hospital.

Obviously, of you have symptoms of the virus you are separated.

ERs, again obviously, don’t have people coming like they normally would.

The problem is the jump to a conclusion of a hoax that flies in the face of everyone we know involved in the fight against the virus on the front line.

Most hospitals try to separate the much smaller number of people visiting with usual ailments from the virus patients.

Many are tested off site and end up coming by ambulance later.

The “war zone” would be in ICU in the hospitals in heavily affected areas like NYC.

I shouldn’t really have to explain this as it’s obvious.

  8. CP? You are dumber than a box of hammers. NONE of what you say is even remotely provable. I KNOW people that are in the frontlines like you are talking about. They are being laid off! THERE IS NO VIRUS! NO CASES. It is ALL A FREAKING LIE! You are a fool with blood on your hands just like all the liars in the media. GET BEHIND ME SATAN!

  9. I know people who know other people who know the people all of you are talking about and let me tell you everything is half fake and half true but most of it is borderline in the gray zone. If it wasn’t for this sunshine blog, I would probably be confused but these sunshine commenters make everything fall into place. Stay tuned…tic, tock, tic, tock, tic, tock, hug satan, tic, tock, tic, tock, meeeeeeoooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww…
