IL-Sen/IL-14: State Republicans Snub Mark Curran and Jim Oberweis

Live stream schedule of IL speakers during convention excludes Durbin and Underwood challengers

The Illinois Republican Party issued its schedule of live stream speakers to complement the Republican National Convention speakers during convention week between the morning and evening sessions. Once the Republican National Committee finalized its speaker list, the state party released their list on Monday mid-morning.

First reaction came at 1:35PM CDT from Mark Curran through Twitter, which was when I got wind of this:

After seeing the Curran tweet and after a quick phone call to the Oberweis congressional campaign and receiving no comment, my tweet followed:

So tuning into the live stream at 2:30PM, State Party Executive Director Derek Murphy kicked off the Monday live stream with State Chairman Tim Schneider and National Committeeman Richard Porter. Halfway through the streaming, Jennifer Nevins, an alternate delegate to the 2016 national convention posted a comment in Facebook on the Monday live stream page of IL GOP:

“Everyone is hearing about how you are having four days of a live stream event and you honor failed candidates but refuse to feature the ONE statewide candidate you have.

“Then when asked about it Derek Murphy gives some garbage about how Catalina Lauf is doing outreach the Latinos. Great? But tell is why that makes her more important than the man battling it out with Durbin!

“The IL GOP has done NOTHING for its nominees – from Curran on down.

“Of course, you have no money because who in their right minds would give you any? But at LEAST you could advertise for those running! Anyone who manages to win as a Republican in this begotten state does so IN SPITE of you!”

Judging by the comments, Nevins and several other supporters of Curran were on the Facebook live stream, which showed to have a little over 50 people watching.

While Curran was well covered by his volunteers, the question posed about Jim Oberweis applies, too. One might suspect the reason Curran was snubbed is, in spite of Willie Wilson’s presence on the fall ballot, the U.S. Senate contest in Illinois is still rated as “Strong/Solid Democrat” by all of the ratings services for congressional races.

But that reason doesn’t work, because 6th congressional district candidate Jeanne Ives’ race was downgraded to “Solid/Strong Democrat” by Cook Political Report a week and a half ago, and Ives is speaking and tag-teaming with Congressman Mike Bost (IL-12).

The same Cook Political Report ratings changes included a downgrade of IL-14 to “Likely Democrat”, and an upgrade for Congressman Rodney Davis to “Leans Republican”. Davis is tag-teaming with IL-17 nominee Esther Joy King, in a “Likely Democrat” rated race against Congresswoman and DCCC chair Cheri Bustos.

While Nevins singled out Catalina Lauf speaking about minority outreach, Lauf tag teaming with IL-04 Republican nominee Jesus Solorio, Jr. is likely a good fit given both Solorio and Lauf represent not only Hispanics, but Millennials. While Lauf was not successful in her own race and displayed questionable judgement about a race in south Florida, Millennial Republicans have won competitive primaries:

  • CO-03 Lauren Boebert (36) beat 4-term incumbent Scott Tipton
  • NC-11 Madison Cawthorn, who just turned 25 this month, won over a President Trump-endorsed candidate in a runoff
  • FL-13, last Tuesday, Anna Paulina Luna won a highly competitive, high dollar primary over over two formidable opponents, one a former aide to Senator Lisa Murkowski backed by House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy and the other the 2018 nominee in the Tampa-St. Pete area of Florida to challenge Democrat Charlie Crist

Of those listed above, Cawthorn, along with Congressman Dan Crenshaw (TX-02) and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (NY-21) are all speaking at the Republican National Convention, along with Kim Klacik, the nominee for MD-07 whose video about Democrat-run Baltimore went viral last week. Millennial Republican congressional members and candidates will be well represented this week.

All that said, having Lauf speaking during a week of live streaming but not having Oberweis is a double whammy on the Republican nominee for Congress for most of McHenry County.

Maybe Mr. Curran and state Senator Oberweis should do their own live stream about the November election, and given the state party’s track record, one shouldn’t be surprised if Curran/Oberweis has more viewership than the state party.

IL-Sen/IL-14: State Republicans Snub Mark Curran and Jim Oberweis — 11 Comments

  1. Sadly, there are those in the republican party who either still don’t understand what happened in 2016 or are really just playing the heel for the democrats.

The election of Trump was a rejection of BOTH parties and the way they have been running things for decades.

People were sick and tired of being left behind while we slowly march toward globalization.

Trump offered an option, that globalization isn’t inevitable, that we don’t have to lose jobs to overseas and so on.

So the average people nominated him and pretty much took over the Republican Party from the “globalist conservatives”.

hat’s why you see so many FORMER republican lawmakers endorsing Biden.

So, with that background, it doesn’t surprise me that the old gaurd republicans, especially in Illinois where they are more purple don’t really want to support Curran.

I’ve met Mark and heard him speak, and he would make an excellent senator, and that’s the problem.

They want to go back to the old ways.

Pay lip service to conservative and American values, while we march on to globalization.

Mark strikes me as someone who supports traditional American values and that’s a bad thing, to the establishment way of doing things.

Sorry to say that they are not getting the party back.

I don’t think it’s possible at this point.

The never trumpers and the globalist republicans really should just join the democrats.

That’s the team they really are on.

  2. Neal is a perspicacious and prescient fellow.

Wise words, Neal, but fools cannot begin to comprehend the shattering import of what you have written.

  3. You can now add former RINO Gov. Jim Edgar to the never Trumpers mob.

Just saw him on the news saying that he detests Trump and will not vote for him.

  4. All of what I said is just simple observation, so I guess the wisdom would be in paying attention.

Trump isn’t a normal “republican”. He is an outsider whose election was a direct result of the people rejecting the establishment and where they saw the country heading.

He isn’t some racist nazi like dictator.

Truth is, he is a man of incredible wealth, that had really nothing to gain and has lost much throughout all of this.

He’s probably done more for the black community with all of the jobs he has provided than any of the democrats, let alone someone like Biden or Sanders.

  5. When you really think about it, there are only a handful of Americans who could have pulled off what trump did.

    Had to be a billionaire

Had to have good name recognition

Had to have some kind of media experience/presence

Had to have an ego, ambition, guts, thick skin, high intelligence, resourcefulness —- whatever you want to call it

End result: Trump is one of five or so people who could have done it.

Shi*theads like Edgar, McCaine, Flake (a good name for him), Colin Powell (affirmative action general w/ 110 IQ) Kacenich are all RINO losers who just love the LGBTQ/anti-white agendas

  6. From the getgo, the ILGOP has had an image problem in terms of “it doesn’t look like they support Oberweis.”

That started from the moment Oberweis won the nomination, arguably even before when over 900 thousand dollars was spent against him by some shadowy PAC in the primary.

And based on this story, the situation has not improved much.

    He’s still getting snubbed.

If we’re going by electability, Oberweis has a greater chance than Solorio or King.

I have no idea who any of the people at the 6 p.m. slot tonight are.

  7. Eddie, yes.

    Evertsen from McHenry County did.

I think Shaw from Lake County did

I think there were 3-5 county chairmen (out of 7) who backed Oberweis, he had more GOP county chairmen support than any other candidate running in the 14th, and those people’s support was part of the reason he won the primary.

At least they supported him in the primary.

If you’re asking what any GOP county chairs are doing for him NOW, I don’t really know.

Presumably, they’re giving him some money?

They’re organizing events and inviting him to speak at those events along with their county/local candidates.

Since ILGOP is in such terrible financial shape, it might make more sense to have local GOPs advertise local GOP candidates and just slap on the couple of federal candidates like Oberweis and Curran to the “vote for” section.

Especially since it looks like national organizations aren’t interested in Oberweis or Curran.

  8. Thanks, Correcting. 😁

Any word from current McHenry GOP Chair Tyler Wilkie? 🤔
