Daily Herald Endorses Suzanne Ness for State Representative

Suzanne Ness

From the Daily Herald:

When Republican Allen Skillicorn was an East Dundee village trustee, we were impressed by the fervor with which he pursued fiscal conservancy. We endorsed him in his first run for the 66th House District in 2016.

He replaced an exemplary legislator in Mike Tryon, who knew how to work both sides of the aisle to get things done. Tryon retired from the legislature in 2016, having accomplished a great deal.

Skillicorn is no Mike Tryon.

We supported the candidacy of Carolyn Schofield in this year’s Republican primary, largely on the basis that Skillicorn hasn’t learned how to build consensus — he simply tries to force people to accept his point of view. For a Republican in Illinois, consensus-building is a prerequisite. Our opinion has not changed.

Skillicorn also was listed as “present” and voted on two dozen bills and resolutions one day last year when he was hundreds of miles away from Springfield in a parade in Harvard. He has apologized for his “mistake” and it was determined no malice was intended, though we’ve never gotten any sort of explanation for just what happened.

Democrat Suzanne Ness is challenging Skillicorn. She is a McHenry County Board member from Crystal Lake and owns a corporate training firm. As a Democrat on a largely Republican county board, she knows a thing or two about compromise and working across the aisle, introducing an ethics policy. She counts a stronger set of ethics policies in state government, too.

Ness is endorsed.

The 66th House District includes parts of Algonquin, Crystal Lake, East Dundee, West Dundee, Elgin, Gilberts, Huntley, Sleepy Hollow and Lakewood.

Daily Herald Endorses Suzanne Ness for State Representative — 10 Comments

  1. Mike Tryon “having accomplished a great deal”?

    Really?

How about lining his pockets in the MDA deal, and knifing every conservative he could find in the back?

Tryon is another Aaron Shepley type.

Tryon may well have to face many angry people on his way to the “Hill of Pennance”.

  2. When is the McGOP going to realize that running hardline republicans are only going to lose their control of power.

They need to shock some life back into the party with better candidates instead of the same old losers, associates and radicals.

  3. Accepting thousands of dollars from Mike Madigan is ethical according to editorial boards

  4. Tryon aside, the endorsement by the Herald was tame compared to what it could have been given Skillicorn is MIA, apart from submitting email press releases and he and wife moving out of East Dundee after selling their townhome, but not buying property anywhere in the district.

And this was the guy who once thought he’d be a great IL-14 congressional challenger to Lauren Underwood.

Skillicorn pulled a Bruce Rauner and tried, unsuccessfully, to get out of the race and let another Republican run in November after winning the primary. Skillicorn wanted a Republican with a fire in their belly, to try to win. He also wanted to determine whom the Republican is, so he never withdrew from the ballot because the right candidate in Skillicorn’s eyes never emerged.

Somewhere between the two Trump rallies he attended in June (Oklahoma, Arizona) and mid-July, Skillicorn got burned out. Ness observed the registration of his business to Arizona, so one may think after his time in Springfield is done in mid-January, him and wife are moving to AZ from their rental in Sleepy Hollow.

The only footprint giving a hint to his burnout (though I know there is more) in social media was the disappointment/abandonment he expressed with his failed move to recall Governor J.B. Pritzker.

Now people are asking for Skillicorn materials, and I cannot in good conscience tell them to vote for him because of his abandonment of the race, and now it’s time to leave the 66th spot on the ballot blank.

  5. “When is the McGOP going to realize that running hardline republicans are only going to lose their control of power. They need to shock some life back into the party with better candidates instead of the same old losers, associates and radicals.”

Why not just elect elect Democrats? What’s the difference?

  6. Who cares what paper endorsements come to any candidates!

People think because they get a paper endorsement they are going to actually win is a joke!

Papers have become worthless because they have zero journalistic integrity anymore.

Shaw Media, unless otherwise proven different, Franks has a vested interest.

So what if they still endorse Republican Candidates.

They choose the ones that have the best chance in winning.

Any candidates, such as Ness of so called having a shot will get their endorsement.

With the scandals that have come out of the Democrat party and not anyone calling for their resignation shows how Franks has the pulse of the Democratic party.

Acosta should have been exited a long time ago when he got fired.

Where is the #MeToo regarding Franks.

Where is the Democratic Party asking for them to step down?

If, just if, the Republicans lose a lot in McHenry County it won’t be because of the Republicans not showing up, it is because they moved to another state!

  7. MsTrumpion, people like Tryon are always heralded by the media as the “ideal Republican.”

Look at how they love Romney and the Bush family.

It’s all about being a useful idiot for Democrats, that’s what the media looks for in a “good” Republican.

Now take a look at who the most hated Republicans are. (The so-called “Eastern Bloc” is written about like they’re monsters who are responsible for every problem in Illinois, yet they have absolutely no power in Springfield, even in their own party — it is very strange.)

I disagree with John on leaving it blank.

One of the candidates is going to be elected.

Why would you not vote for the only alternative to Ness, assuming you do not want Ness in Springfield and view Republicans as a lesser evil than Democrats?

“Skillicorn pulled a Bruce Rauner and tried, unsuccessfully, to get out of the race and let another Republican run in November after winning the primary. Skillicorn wanted a Republican with a fire in their belly, to try to win. He also wanted to determine whom the Republican is, so he never withdrew from the ballot because the right candidate in Skillicorn’s eyes never emerged.”

    Seriously?

    Those are big allegations.

Do you have a source on that?

    I’ll even consider social media.

  8. Correcting, it’s been over a month, but this article from Cal revealed there was an informal “cattle call” in August of potential Skillicorn replacements, four potential replacements were named:

    http://mchenrycountyblog.com/2020/08/11/erik-ruth-being-eyed-as-most-viable-candidate-to-replace-allen-skillicorn/

That’s a partial confirmation with what you asked.

Others not named in the article, and whom I will not name publicly, were floating their names around, too, and my sources are credible.

The article should be enough to confirm my allegations, even partially, that Skillicorn was doing a Rauner, but this time, we didn’t have to find out after-the-election.

  9. Three jeers for Allen “The Flaming Fecal Heap” Skillicorn!!

If you’re going to abandon your constituents and your responsibilities, then stop cashing taxpayer checks.
