Message of the Day – Flipper

No, not the porpoise.

It’s a new machine featured on the daily email “The Brew.”

Flipping hamburgers.”

Flippy, by Miso Robotics, is the world’s first autonomous robotic kitchen assistant,” the sponsored entry says.

When I worked at McDonald’s in Crystal Lake right after high school in 1960, there were humans flipping burgers.

And I only saw one picked up off the floor…which was mopped every night.

I’d guess the mechanical flipper won’t make a mistake like that.

I was a cashier (for $1 an hour) and found it easier to add the price of the purchases in my head than to use the adding machine.

Now, people can order from kiosks, which have to some extent, replaced the push button cash registers that replaced the adding machines.

Just another indication of an unintended consequence of raising the minimum wage.

  1. You worked there two years before the Filet-O-Fish was created.

According to Wikipedia, “The Filet-O-Fish is a fish sandwich sold by the international fast food restaurant chain McDonald’s.[1] It was created in 1962 by Lou Groen, a McDonald’s franchise owner in Cincinnati, Ohio,[2][3] in response to falling hamburger sales on Fridays resulting from the Roman Catholic practice of abstaining from meat on Fridays.[4] While the fish composition of the sandwich has changed through the years to satisfy taste and address supply shortcomings, the framework of its ingredients have remained constant; a fried breaded fish fillet, a steamed bun, tartar sauce and pasteurized American cheese.”
