Mayor Chuck Sass challenged by 2nd-term Trustee Tim Hoeft

As previously reported on McHenry County Blog, Huntley Village Trustee Timothy Hoeft filed last week on the first day of filing for village president, along with four trustee candidates.

Since the first day of filing, 5-term incumbent Village President Charles Sass filed for reelection for the opportunity to serve a 6th term, along with two additional trustee candidates.

Assuming Hoeft stays in the race, this creates a head-to-head contest for village president between Sass and Hoeft in the April 6th election.

Hoeft ran for Grafton Township highway commissioner as an independent in 2013 as part of the Restore Grafton Township slate, losing to the Republican nominee by 314 votes.

Sass openly endorsed Hoeft in 2013 for highway commissioner.

Two years later, Hoeft won election to village trustee in Huntley, and won his 2nd term last year unopposed.

Given Sass has openly backed Hoeft in the past, McHenry County Blog will watch to see if both candidates stay in the village president race, or if one withdraws.

Hoeft’s current trustee term ends in 2023, so even with a withdrawal, he’ll continue to serve on the Huntley Village Board.

For village trustee, candidate Lisa Arvanites withdrew from the race, so five candidates, including all 3 incumbents, will be in the contested trustee race, all for four-year terms:

  • Ronda Goldman (i)
  • Burt Natkins
  • John Piwko (i)
  • Mary Holtzkopf
  • JR Westberg (i)

The three candidates who stayed in the race and filed simultaneously on December 14 are listed in ballot order, after this morning’s ballot lottery to determine the first 3 candidate order of the ballot.

Candidates Holtzkopf and Trustee Westberg filed simultaneously yesterday, so a lottery will take place next Tuesday to determine ballot order for the last two spots on the trustee ballot.

The village clerk is not elected in Huntley.

During the pandemic Chuck Sass allowed Huntley restaurants and bars to be open with disregard to the health and safety of employees and customers….and more importantly, the advice of state health officials.

    Shame on you Chuck Sass!!
