As economist and author Thomas Sowell says:

“More whites were brought as slaves to North Africa than Blacks brought as slaves to the United States or to the 13 colonies from which it was formed.

“White slaves were still being bought and sold in the Ottoman Empire, decades after Blacks were freed in the United States.”

    How about this one: the vast majority of slave traders were moslems and jews.

    Or this one:

    Blacks enslaved themselves for millennia before any European set foot in black Africa.

    Or this one:

    Blacks sold their black slaves to the jewish and moslem slave traders.

    Or this one:
    Certain American Indians on their reservations kept black slaves into the 1920s.

    Or this one:
    Brazil kept slavery going after the US Civil War.

    Or this one:

    Black Slavery still exists in Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Chad, Sudan, etc., THIS VERY DAY!

  6. The truth is that the history of the United States has always been the subjugation and maltreatment of populations that were not of white Christian European descents – Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, Jewish Americans, Hispanic Americans….

    Yes, African leaders traded their own people.

    Yes, slavery existed for thousands of years.

    But it doesn’t erase the facts that black people were treated as less than human in this country and are still treated with such bigotry.

    Trump raised 207 million since December by LYING over and over again to the American people.

  8. Can someone explain to me how the moral failings of others excuse our own ? I don’t recall that in the Bible.

    Such purported “truthful” justifications are all the more offensive inasmuch as the founding generation deemed it “self-evident” that slavery was a moral failing by proclaiming in the Declaration of Independence that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are . . . Liberty . . . .”

    Jefferson’s original draft of the Declaration of Independence included strong language opposing the transatlantic slave trade, but was omitted so as not to offend southern sensibilities.

    As President, in 1807 Jefferson (a slaveowner himself) signed a bill outlawing the transatlantic slave trade.

    He well understood what a moral failing slavery was (decrying the practice as a “moral depravity” and a “hideous blot”), regardless of who else engaged in such reprehensible practice. (“Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever . . . .” (Thomas Jefferson, Notes on the State of Virginia, 1782)).

    And Jefferson wasn’t alone. (George Washington once described slavery as his life’s “only unavoidable subject of regret.” And James Madison called it “the most oppressive dominion ever exercised by man over man.”)

    Hmm, God-given and unalienable, except when there’s a tidy profit to be made.

    What is truly astounding is that such “truths” continue to be paraded out in the 21st century as a thinly veiled justification or apologia for American slavery.

    But they are laughable. Slavery was a “moral depravity” (and recognized as such) in America’s past and such “truths” don’t change that.

    Maybe that’s because I read 8-10 hours a day.

    But also teach that pointing out such Black History cannot and does not justify the practice of slavery in the United States, as even the founding fathers recognized.

    And what, exactly, does the IQ of someone or of an entire race have to do with the God-given unalienable right of liberty ?

    Might want to add that in New York City there was a poster that had the following pay scale:

    Negroes 50 cents

    Italians 25 cents

    My Italian wife found that in a book about Italian immigrants.

    You lost your mind in three separate posts at the mere mention of such history.

    If you were to have a problem with teaching such history how would your reaction differ from what you’ve displayed on this thread?

  15. This post and the comments reminds me of the quote, “if you’re protesting against racism, you’re going to upset some racists.”

    It’s Black History Month.

    Putting certain things to light doesn’t mean everything else is denounced.

    Using someone else’s platform to introduce an otherwise unrelated agenda under the guise of an equal voice only promotes your own insecurities.

    I’m absolutely shocked when I read these posts that I live amongst such ignorant people.

    The basis of your under-privilege lies within your lack of education, marginal word view, and habits of deflecting personal responsibility.

  16. What should be prominent in Black History month is the Democrat Party’s role in suppressing Black African Americans.

    Such as Democrats in the US Congress who VIGOROUSLY opposed Republican President Abraham Lincoln’s efforts to free the slaves.

    Also, the role of Democrats regarding Jim Crow to suppress African Americans.

    This suppression went on a long time with Democrats such as with Democrat Senator Robert Byrd who recruited for the Klan.

    op Democrats in 2010 no less praised Byrd at his funeral in 2010.

    There were other highly racist Democrats such Democrat Governor Wallace of Ala who ran for presidency in the 1960’s.

    A great President, perhaps the greatest of all in the U.S., freed the slaves.

    Kind of ironic that recent news indicated that some want to take down statues of Lincoln in Chicago.

    Guess that says a lot about Chicago these days.

    Who the H would want to live there today with this and the recent disastrous House Bill vigorously opposed by the vast, vast majority of law enforcement experts.

    Chicago a hellhole run by Democrats for many, many decades.

    The problem I have is that taken in isolation such “truths” are oftentimes thinly veiled attempts to minimize or mitigate slavery (“Well, everybody else did it, and some still do it today, so what’s the big deal ?”) or to fan racist views. (Read some of the foregoing comments.)

    In my opinion, to think otherwise, to think that listing such “truths” is merely an honest-to-goodness (“aw shucks”) attempt to introduce balance or include germane “truths” in the teaching of the history of slavery is not only naive but dangerous.

    Sure, teach such “truths”, but always, always also stress in conjunction therewith that such “truths” have never and never can justify such an institution and that such “truths” are often misused to soft-pedal or condone such an abomination.

    So, yeah, that’s why I have a problem with it, together with the notion that most of our educators are “left-wing”.

    (Mr. Elder’s ideological petticoats are showing, hardly an indication of his impartiality and bona fides.)
