McHenry Police Investigate Fatal Vehicle Crash

On Thursday, June 17th, 2021 at approximately 4:05PM, the McHenry Police Department and McHenry Township Fire Protection District (MTFPD) responded to the intersection of Elm Street (IL Route 120) and Curran Road for a two vehicle crash.

The initial investigation determined a black 2006 Ford Crown Victoria
and a gray 2012 Hyundai Veloster collided in the intersection.

The collision cause the Ford to exit the roadway and rest upright in a drainage ditch on the southeast corner of the intersection.

There were four occupants in the Hyundai.

Two did not report any injuries at the scene.

Two occupants were transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

There were two occupants in the Ford.

The driver did not report any injuries at the scene.

Due to the damage it took MTFPD approximately fifteen minutes to extricate the passenger from the vehicle.

The Ford’s passenger, a 52-year-old woman from Wonder Lake, was then flown by LifeNet McHenry to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where she later died.

An autopsy by the Lake County Coroner’s Office determined the preliminary cause of death to be multiple blunt force traumas consistent
with the motor vehicle crash.

The preliminary investigation at the scene of the crash determined the Ford was travelling east on Elm Street at Curran Road.

The Hyundai was travelling west on Elm Street attempting a left turn to travel south on Curran Road.

The Ford disobeyed a red light, drove into the intersection and struck the Hyundai.

There were no indications that drugs and/or alcohol played a factor in the crash.

The intersection was partially closed for approximately one (1) hour.
The driver of the Ford, EMMET J. ZYWIEC, 19, of Wonder Lake, Illinois, was issued traffic citations for:

 Disobeying a Traffic Control Signal (625 ILCS 5/11-306) and
 Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle (625 ILCS 5/3-707).

Zywiec was release on scene with a court date of July 26th, 2021 in Woodstock, Illinois.
