Jesse Sullivan

One of the magnificent millennials to announce Republican gubernatorial bid Thursday afternoon having already raised millions from donors

Shia Kapos’ POLITICO Illinois Playbook reported Tuesday morning:

FIRST IN PLAYBOOK: Watch for Republican tech entrepreneur Jesse Sullivan to throw his hat in the ring to run for governor this week. He’s notified friends that he’ll be announcing Thursday. Sullivan lives in Petersburg but is also founder of the Alter Global venture capital firm in San Francisco. He’s been reaching out to potential donors, telling them he has $5 million in commitments, according to a fundraising booklet obtained by Playbook. Sullivan also has pulled together a campaign team, including campaign manager Noah Sheinbaum, a management consultant who worked for Bain & Co., and Eric Wilson, a digital strategist who also worked on Sen. Marco Rubio’s campaign.

Sullivan would face state Sen. Darren Bailey, former state Sen. Paul Schimpf, and business owner Gary Rabine, in a June 2022 primary.

Media advisory issued Wednesday:

UPDATE: Video Announcement Launches Jesse Sullivan Candidacy for Republican Nomination for Governor with $10.8 Million Raised in Past Week — 14 Comments

  1. Literally who? Zero grassroots support.

    Nobody knows who he is.

Only has a few hundred followers on Twitter.

YET.. raises over 20 times more than the leading Republican has (over the course of several months) WITHIN DAYS!

Support obviously coming from other rich people and himself.

The “watch out” detector is going off.

The main reason so many people gave Trump a pass for being very rich and getting into politics was because he is funny, like when he makes fun of Rosie and journalists, but he’s more of an exception than the rule.

Sure, America is collapsing, but could we at least get a guy who makes us say hahaha while it goes down the toilet?

    Throw us a bone.

(And about half of the country did not give him a pass.)

People naturally distrust the very wealthy, and given the pandemic which has greatly exacerbated income inequality, the timing might work against this hedge fund guy.

Part of Bailey’s appeal is that he’s a farmer.

People see him as a blue collar kind of guy.

But there might be a desire among Republican leaders to back this Kelly dude given the party’s abysmal money situation while heading into a match against the billionaire governor and due to the guy being young (the party has struggled to attract young voters).

The last thing is not political, but just an observation: He looks like a cross between Ben Affleck and John Cena.

  2. Correcting, we’ll see if he will resonate with any Republican.

Something you left out, and something been missing with major governor candidates here in Illinois, is military service, which Sullivan has in the Army.

With the collapse of a withdrawal from Afghanistan, and that was where Sullivan served overseas about 10 years ago, there may be a connection among Republican primary voters.

Stakes are going up in Illinois governor’s race, and Bailey, Rabine and Schimpf better get cracking raising money.

And the minor candidates for governor like Solomon, the other guy and the lady may want to consider dropping out.

  3. Meant to write *Jesse* not Kelly.

Schimpf was in the military too, although I don’t know if he was ever stationed in Afghanistan.

Who knows if those minor candidates will even make the ballot.

They really don’t get much attention.

It’s all about the big three (Bailey, Rabine, and Schimpf), and Schimpf doesn’t even get much attention either.

Sullivan will probably end up getting a lot of attention since he’s blowing everybody else out of the water on fundraising and technically he hasn’t even announced yet!

    Wasn’t Roper in the military?

Erickson was also in the army, but that was in the 80’s.

She filled out Ballotpedia’s survey, so that puts to rest my suspicion that she is a bot, but so far I have not seen her in any interviews or at public events.

If she wants to get on the radar, she should consider heckling Republicans.

It worked for Bobby Piton who was ignored before he heckled Dan Crenshaw.

    I forgot about Solomon.

He was at a gubernatorial forum and he has been on the ballot before for other things, so he might at least get on the ballot.

He would be the only non-white GOP candidate for governor.

Just a thought: Jesse Sullivan’s entry into the race probably hurts Schimpf (military) and Rabine (business) more than it affects Bailey.

That is 7 people running for governor already and petition passing doesn’t even start until January!

There were a lot of candidates in 2010 too and the winner only had like 20 something percent.

  4. He’s obviously a put up by JBPrickster.

    It’s called ‘controlled opposition’ dummies!

  5. “Magnificent Millennials?”

    There’s nothing magnificent about millennials.

  6. “There’s nothing magnificent about millennials”

While I used that reference tongue-in-cheek, the millennials, who started turning 40 this year (based on Pew Research Center definition), are in their prime, and whether it’s AOC, Lauren Underwood, Elise Stefanik, Madison Cawthorn, Candace Owens, Kim Klacik, Charlie Kirk, Esther Joy King or McHenry County’s own Catalina Lauf, millennials, who started entering national politics big time in 2018, will be dominant in everything.

Boomers and GenX about to be completely pushed to side with possible exception of GenX FL Gov Ron DeSantis (turns 43 this fall).

  7. Is this Zuckerman’s money ? follow the money i.e. Soros.. beware … of a Rino… in the jungle.

    Chase +1

  8. Zuckerberg has not given.

The big name tech exec thus far is Chris Larsen, who gave $5 million to his fellow Bay Area-based venture capitalist who calls Illinois home.

Larsen has been a maxed-out donor to Adam Kizinger, Liz Cheney among Republicans and newly appointed Democrat U.S. Senator Alex Padilla of CA.

What will be interesting to watch…will this next venture capitalist attempted takeover of IL governor’s mansion also include recruiting running mates to take over the IL General Assembly, with money to prevent a 2nd Bruce Rauner governor’s term?

  9. So he is an Ivy League educated bay area venture capitalist (why is his firm in San Francisco instead of Illinois?) who is being supported by bay area venture capitalists who contribute to Never Trump Republicans as well as Democrats from California.

Good to know, but that’s all the information about him we’ll need!

“Our beautiful home, it’s worth fighting for.”

    There’s the Raunerite language!

  10. Crypto-currency plus NGO-type foreign volunteer projects? Why am I nervous already..?
