Fron State Senator Dan McConchie:

McConchie: Redistricting failure a sad day for voting rights in Illinois

Dan McConchie

Earlier this summer, Gov. Pritzker broke his highly publicized campaign promise to veto partisan maps when he signed the Democratic Majority’s proposal. The official census numbers released last month showed the maps the Governor signed were off by 30%, making them unconstitutional and causing the Democrats to come back and pass new maps last month.

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) and other minority groups including the Illinois African Americans for Equitable Redistricting and The Latino Policy Forum are now calling on the Governor to veto the latest partisan-drawn districts.

At the time of this update, the Governor has still not signed the new maps, and my federal court challenge, McConchie v Illinois, is moving forward. You can read my full statement on the redistricting failure by clicking the button below.

Despite criticism from Republicans, good government groups, and community organizations, Illinois Democrats rushed to pass new, adjusted legislative maps in a one-day special session, after their originals were found to be unconstitutional. Senate Republican Leader Dan McConchie issued the below statement immediately following the vote:

“This is a sad day for everyone who has fought for voting rights in Illinois,” said Illinois Senate Republican Leader Dan McConchie (R-Hawthorn Woods). “The Democratic Majority has abandoned their neighbors and the communities they represent in their quest to consolidate power at all costs. It is now entirely up to Gov. Pritzker to veto this politician-drawn map and right this incredible wrong they have done to the people of Illinois.”
