Morning, July 4th, Car v. Pole, Pole Wins

July 04, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: 4th of July, Accident, Car, Country Donuts, Crystal Lake, Crystal Lake Police, Route 14

A press release from the Crystal Lake Police Department about a car that hit a utility pole in front of Country Donuts:

Crystal Lake Traffic Crash July 4th, 2011

On Monday, July 4th, 2011 at around 6:55am, emergency crews from the Crystal Lake Fire/Rescue and Police Departments responded to a report of a single-vehicle traffic crash on South Virginia Street (Route 14) near Virginia Road.

A Com Ed truck braces the utility pole in front of Country Donuts.

Upon arrival crews determined a motorist, operating a 1996 Chevrolet 3500 pick-up truck, had struck a utility pole located in front of 181 South Virginia Street.

The motorist, identified as Daniel McDonough (21) of Chicago, IL, was treated by Crystal Lake Fire/Rescue on scene for minor facial injuries sustained as a result of the collision. McDonough declined further medical treatment.

The subsequent traffic crash investigation revealed Daniel McDonough was westbound on South Virginia Street when he crossed the eastbound lanes, left the roadway, and struck a utility pole located in the parkway in front of 181 South Virginia Street.

McDonough reported he was adjusting the radio in the Chevrolet when he crossed the eastbound lanes, left the roadway, and struck the pole.

The pole may have won the contest, but it was listed as "critical."

McDonough was cited with Improper Lane Usage and Failure to Wear a Safety Belt, Illinois Complied Statutes 625ILCS 5.0/11-709A and 5.0/12-603.1. He is scheduled to appear in court on August 4th, 2011 at the McHenry County Courthouse in Woodstock.

Traffic on Virginia Street remained unrestricted during the crash investigation.

The utility pole sustained some damage and will have to be replaced.

In the meantime, a crew from the utility company braced the pole to prevent its collapse.

Walsh Has Another Day of Parades

July 04, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: 4th of July, 4th of July Parade, Barrington, Joe Walsh, Parade, Spring Grove

Congressman Joe Walsh’s campaign sends out this email in the hope that supporters will join him on the 4th of July:

INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADES! JULY 4TH, 2011!

We had an incredible turnout today in Crystal Lake, Mundelein and Wonder Lake.  One last day of parades tomorrow….let’s let everyone know how thrilled we are to have Joe Walsh as our Congressman and how much we love this country!

Congressman Joe Walsh waving at the Crystal Lake 4th of July Parade crowd.

BARRINGTON:

Line up begins tomorrow morning bright and early at 9:00 a.m. We will have our decorated truck in the VIP lot which is located at the Barrington High School front entrance on Main Street (just east of Hart Road).  Look for the truck with LOTS of flags…..and the marching band in uniform!  The parade will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. and will proceed east on Main Street, ending at the train station, north commuter parking lot via Wool Street.  This year’s theme is “Traditions and Memories” and will be recognizing the founding members of Barrington’s VFW as the Grand Marshals.

After the parade Joe and the truck will drive directly up to the Spring Grove parade.  There are two cars that will be available to drive some people back to the high school if necessary to get their cars.

SPRING GROVE:

Line up begins at 10:30 a.m. @ Intermatic, 7777 Winn Road, Spring Grove. We are slot #8 (near the emergency vehicles). There is parking across the street.  You can walk across Winn Road to the Intermatic lot. After 11:30 a.m. Winn Road will be shut down so make sure you are in the area as close to 11:00 as possible.

The Parade begins at 12:00 noon starting at Intermattic and moving North on Winn, right on Main, Left on Blivin then Left into Horse Fair Park.  Parade entrants will enter Horse Fair Park and take a left into the parking lot of Spring Grove School and proceed around to the front of the school and park  Once the crowd has dispersed, the parade entrants will have access to Main Street.  It could take a while until we are able to drive people back to the start of the parade, but the truck will be available to do so once the roads have cleared.  Please note that the decorated truck will not be there until close to start time so do not panic….and the Congressman will be with the truck so wait for him!

Don’t forget your sunscreen, to drink lots of water and wear comfortable walking shoes.  We look forward to seeing you all.

Crystal Lake Fireworks

July 04, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: 4th of July, Crystal Lake, Fireworks

A serene sunset preceded the fireworks on Crystal Lake.

It’s the 4th of July, Independence Day, but if you are expecting Crystal Lake to have fireworks tonight, you must have been gone last night.

The light was so intense from this series of fireworks that my lens caught a reflection on Crystal Lake.

At least a half an hour of fireworks were shot off from a barge in the northeast part of Crystal Lake Sunday night.

This one reminded me of a cush ball.

The weather was quite pleasant, although the mosquitoes were a bit annoying.

This series of fireworks reminded me of a palm tree.

One misfired and detonated much too low. Don’t if any of the boats anchored closest to the action got a surprise they didn’t expect. Hope not.

This shot caught two shells bursting. The one on top reminds me to a warp speed sequence from Star Wars.

We stayed moored at our CCAPOA Gate 7 slip on the South Side of Crystal Lake.

Blue is the color I see best, so this one appealed to me.

Easy in and easy out.

This one reminds me of a dalia.

It was a very satisfying day.

This shell or series of shells looks like a windmill.

Marvelous parade.

Would crystals in a dish look like this under a microscope?

Fireworks better than in Chicago.

Message of the Day – A Cake

Decorated with blueberries and strawberries, this cake is perfect for the 4th of July.

The Politicians at Crystal Lake’s July 4th Parade

July 03, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: 4th of July, 4th of July Parade, Allen Skillicorn, American flag, Cathy Ferguson, Crystal Lake, Crystal Lake Lions Club, Don Manzullo, Donna Kurtz, Dorothy Heisler, Ellen Brady Mueller, Freda Manzullo, Helene Walsh, JA Frate, Jesse White, Jesse White Tumbler, Joe Walsh, John O'Neill, Keith Nygren, Kent Gaffney, Lou Bianchi, Mary Donner, McHenry County Young Republicans, Mike Shorten, Mike Tryon, Nick Kachiroubas, Nick Sauer, Parents Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, PFLAG, Ranchitos, Red Light Cameras, South Shore Drill Team, Young Repubicans

OK. You got me.

It’s July 3rd.

The Color Guard weren't up front in the 2011 Crystal Lake Independence Day Parade, but it will be in this article.

And it wasn’t sweltering hot.  I found the shade most of the hour and a half 90-something entry parade.

The biggest political entry was Congressman Joe Walsh’s.

He followed Congressman Don Manzullo and his wife Freda, who rode in a convertible.

Nineteen year Congressman Don Manzullo rode with his wife Freda in Crystal Lake's 4th of July Parade. Under the Democratic Party's map, Manzullo will represent none of McHenry County after the 2012 elections.

Between them was McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren.  If one did not recognize the Sheriff, one would not have known that he was in the parade.

Sheriff Keith Nygren drove a squad car in Crystal Lake's Independence Day Parade. His wife Marge was riding in the passenger seat and a youngster was waving from the read window.

Last year at parades there were Sheriff’s Department motorcyclists, a snow mobile, a community service vehicle, plus a convertible with identification signs on the sides in which the Sheriff rode.

Would someone familiar wth law enforcement patches tell us in the comments whether this is a photo of a Sheriff's Deputy?

There was an unmarked gray car that followed with a female officer. I’m not familiar enough with the patch she wore to know if she’s a Sheriff’s Deputy.

Fire engines thrilled the kids lining the parade route.

Can’t do a story without mentioning the Grand Marshall. After all she is the mother of McHenry County Board member Jim Heisler and Nunda Township Supervisor John Heisler.

Chemtool President Jim Athans drives Grand Marshall Dorothy Heisler in his splendid convertible.

Next came the Crystal Lake Lions huge flag. I only wish I had had a higher vantage point.

The Crystal Lake Lions gigantic Americal Flag.

JA Frate’s Fallen Heroes semi-trailer paid appropriate honor to those who have defended our freedom.

Crystal Lake's JA Frate's Fallen Heroes trailer was in Crystal Lake's Indendence Day Parade after the huge Lions Club flag.

Then the banner of Congressman Joe Walsh came down the hill.

This banner announced that Congressman Joe Walsh was on the way.

A man with a bull horn said patriotic things.

There were lots of sounds during the parade, but all were musical except the words of this Joe Walsh supporter.

Next came Congressman Walsh.  He was greeting people along the parade route, the only politician besides McHenry County State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi to do so.

Although he represents very few constituents with a Crystal Lake zip code, Congressman Joe Walsh enjoyed good face recognition...probably because of his numerous appearance on national television appearances where a "Tea Party" Republican was desired.

What you see below was not an isolated occurrence.  A number of people made the effort to reach out to Congressman Walsh.

Here is another man who reached out to Joe Walsh once he recognized him. Walsh was wearing nothing to identify himself.

Parents seemed please that Walsh did not ignore the future voters.

Joe Walsh was giving high fives to kids along the route, although i didn't manage to get a shot of that.

These girls were marching in time with the music from Joe Walsh's float.

These girls were marching to the beat blaring from the loud speaker on Joe Walsh's vehicle.

Marching music was playing from Joe Walsh’s parade vehicle and a line of girls were marching to its beat.

Walsh saw them and stepped over to clap in time with them.

The Congressman who has had his 8th District reapportioned out from under him did not ignore the ladies of voting age.

Joe Walsh was not just greeting men during Crystal Lake's 2011 Independence Day Parade.

Some women were as enthusiastic to see him as the men above.

Enthusiasm radiated from this woman's greeting of Joe Walsh.

A blue-shirted lady nearby was not to be outdone. She also grasped Walsh’s hands and told him something.

The energetic Congressman Joe Walsh continued being greeted enthusiastically as the parade continued.

Walsh was not the only member of the family greeting voters.

His wife Helene was pressing the flesh, too.

e

Joe Walsh's wife Helene made contact with this flag-bedecked woman.Did she want a picture with him? No, she wanted a word with one of 435 United States Representatives.

The truck from which the sound was coming contained that part of a mariachi band that needed a stable platform.

The Ranchitos mariachi band that Congressman Joe Walsh hired appealed not only to those with connections to Mexico lining Dole Avenue, but also to the very Anglo guy taking pictures.

Ever since I heard my first mariachi band in the 1960′s, I always wished I had enough money to hire them for parades.  He hired the Ranchitos.  I hope he does it for every parade.

You can see Ranchitos band members are wearing Joe Walsh tee shirts and the drummer is surrounded by American flags. Feel free to comment on what message that Walsh is trying to convey in the comment section below.

Nick Sauer, was marching with Congressman Joe Walsh in the first political event since Kent Gaffney was appointed to take State Rep. Mark Beaubien's seat in the Illinois General Assembly. Sauer was reportedly the choice of Lake County Chairman Bob Cook, who was outvoted by McHenry County GOP Chairman Mike Tryona and newly-appointed Barrington Township Committeeman Gene Dawson.

But that wasn’t all I noticed in the Joe Walsh contingent.

One of the rejected applicants to replace State Rep. Mark Beaubien, Nick Sauer, introduced himself. Since I didn’t have a picture of him, you can bet I pushed the button.

The Barrington School Board member was waving an American Flag at the end of the Walsh group.

Repubiican Precinct Committeeman Mike Shorten

I also spotted past Crystal Lake City Council candidate Mike Shorten.  He is now a  Nunda Township precinct committeeman.

The next political entry was a bicycle ridden by a man displaying signs for McHenry County Board member Donna Kurtz. (She tells me she and her mother, former State Rep. Rosemary Kurtz, were in the parade, but my eyes must have been elsewhere.)

A supporter of McHenry County Board member Donna Kurtz gave her some name identification.

The only County Board member I saw at the parade was Nunda Township’s District 3 member Mary Donner.

McHenry County Board member Mary Donner waves to the crowd on the other side of the street.

Looking very much as if he will be a candidate in the 2012 elections was McHenry County State’s attorney Lou Bianchi.

McHenry County State's Attorney Lou Bianchi worked the Crystal Lake Independence Day Parade.

The political entry was the PTLAG contingent.

The banner of the Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

The acronym is short for “Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.”  The group is a member of the coalition that convinced the Illinois General Assembly to enact the civil union legislation that took effect June 1st.

The next political group was the Jesse White Tumblers.

The van for the Jesse White Tumblers bears the Secretary of State's name.

Before you get all bent out of shape, do remember that Secretary of State Jesse White did accompany his tumblers in one 4th of July Parade.

With the First United Methodist Church of Crystal Lake as his backdrop, a senior member of the Jesse White Tumblers soars through the air.

Coming near the end of the parade were the McHenry County Young Republicans.

The banner of the McHenry County Young Republicans was next. The man who challenged Democrat Jack Franks in 2010, John O'Neill, can be seen to the right of the banner.

McHenry County State Rep. and GOP Chairman Mike Tryon walked with the Young Republicans.

State Rep. Mike Tryon was in the parade.

West Dundee Village Trustee Allen Skillicorn.

While State Rep. Mike Tryon marched with the Young Republicans, I didn’t see State Sen. Pam Althoff.

If newly picked State Rep. Kent Gaffney was in the contingent, I did not recognize him.

His new district will contain more votes in McHenry County than anywhere else.  About a third of Crystal Lake is in it.

A surprise addition was West Dundee Village Trustee Allen Skillicorn.

As I look at the contents of the photos, I see a delightful tee shirt.

It says,

“Honk if you hate red light cameras.

Click to enlarge this photo and you will see a tee shirt that says, "Honk if you hate red light cameras."

That is relevant to McHenry County because Democrat Jack Franks was one of the sponsors of the bill to legalize this form of highway robbery.

And, although it has no political implications, the South Shore Drill Team brought up the rear of the parade.

Look at the smile on this flag waving team member.

The team was worth waiting for.

Almost forgot Crystal Lake’s politicians.

Mayor Aaron Shepley was not present, but City Clerk Nick Kachiroubas was.

City Clerk Nick Kachiroubas.

So were two of the three women on the City Council, Ellen Brady Mueller and Cathy Ferguson.

City Councilwoman Ellen Brady Mueller was one of the first parade entries. I asked her if she was going to run for County Board. She seemed to be thinking about it.

Council member Cathy Ferguson was waving to the crowd.

And, finally, Councilman Ralph Dawson was seated comfortably in the back of a pickup truck.

Council Ralph Dawson sits in the back. Although I see a sign with Jeff Thorsen's name on it, I didn't catch sight of him.

Walsh Campaigning in New 14th Congressional District

June 21, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: 4th of July, 4th of July Parade, Bobby Schilling, Harvard, Joe Stefani, Joe Walsh, Rockford, Rockford Foresters

Congressman Joe Walsh prepares to exchange a high five with a boy at Harvard's Milk Day Parade.

It is unclear where Congressman Joe Walsh will run for re-election.  It is clear he will run somewhere.

Joe Walsh shakes hands with an older gentleman at Harvard's Milk Day Parade.

But, he has announced that he will run for re-election.

Joe Walsh plunks himself in the middle of a Milk Day Parade family for a photo op.

Walsh now shares McHenry County with veteran Congressman Don Manzullo.

Joe Walsh greeting a fan at Harvard's Milk Day Parade.

His district includes the townships on the northern tier of McHenry County from Hebron east.

A Coast Guard Veteran of the USS Mohawk shakes Joe Walsh's hand.

But, he was in Harvard’s Milk Day Parade.

An Illinois State University Red Bird fan and Joe Walsh joke around.

Justifiable since it is an agricultural-centered celebration and Walsh represents lots of farmland in northern McHenry County.

Then, last week, Rockford Foresters Baseball Team President Joe Stefani announced that Walsh and Congressman Bobby Schilling would be honored guests at the Tea Party baseball game on July 9th.

You can bet that Rockford TV will be filming, because Schilling has been assigned the City of Rockford under the Illinois Democrats’ remap.

When I lived at 360 S. Madison Street in Woodstock, we could get Rockford TV. Surely, Harvard and Marengo can as well.

All have been drawn into the new 14th Congressional District.

Then comes a press release from the Walsh campaign announcing 4th of July parades in which Walsh will participate.

While reading it below figure out which parades would influence people in the new 14th District:

SHOW YOUR PATRIOTISM AND COME WALK WITH JOE

IN OUR 4TH OF JULY PARADES!

Message of the Day – A Tee Shirt

July 29, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 4th of July, Crystal Lake, Demonstration, Message of the Day, Rally, Route 14, TEA Party

I Love
My Country.

It’s the Government
I’m Afraid Of.

The woman wearing this tee shirt also carried a sign. It said, "'It does not take a majority to prevail...but an irate, tireless minority keen on setting brushfires of liberty in the minds of men.' Samuel Adams"

That’s what this tee shirt from the July 4th Tea Party rally on Crystal Lake’s Route 14 said.

What to see the sign?

Here it is:

This patriot was carrying a hand-letter sign with a quote from Sam Adams.

Clean-Up Crew

July 15, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 4th of July, 4th of July Parade, Defenders, Diane Ayers, Independence Day, Rusty Ayers, Trash

The Defenders parade entry started the same way many did--with people carrying a banner.

Next was a convertible with Dianne and Rusty Ayers.

Rusty Ayers drove a convertible bedecked in green. His wife Diane Ayers sits on the top of the back seat.

But, then, this last entry in Crystal Lake’s 4th of July Parade made me smile.

It took me a bit of time to figure out that the people with garbage bags were part of a parade unit.

It was members of the McHenry County Defenders, aka, Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, with carrying bags and picking up garbage.

"Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, Citizens Working for a Better Environment" reads the banner on the side of the Falcon Waste & Disposal truck.

There was a Falcon Waste and Recycling truck with a big banner.  I guess that’s where the full trash bags ended up.

Some Defenders were wearing their new lime green tee shirts. ($10 for members.)

The clean-up crew was deployed along both sides of the parade route.

Spectators were more than willing to contribute waste products.

The parade was over.

And, that’s all there was.

= = = = =

The day after the parade, I saw that not everything left behind had made the Defenders’ trash bags.

kirk

A Mark Kirk yard sign left behind after the Crystal Lake 4th of July Parade.

There were a couple of Mark Kirk yard signs left behind.

A smaller piece of debris was on the sidewalk outside the Schwinn Bike shop, The Village Peddler.  It was from McHenry County Democrats.

This was found stuck to the sidewalk after the Independence Day Parade.

And, finally, I noticed this lost bracelet.

Right outside of the Dole Avenue door of the Schwinn Bike Shop lay this bracelet.

Some little girl must have been sad when she noticed that she had lost it.

Message of the Day – A Kiss

July 10, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 4th of July, 4th of July Parade, Cheese, Crystal Lake, Parade, Shadow, Statue of Liberty, Uncle Sam

In the Crystal Lake 4th of July Parade a woman dressed as the Statue of Liberty was walking on stilts.

Also standing tall in the street was Uncle Sam.

I told Lady Liberty that I had just seen her mother in New York.

Here comes a big smackeroo.

She then blew me a kiss.

An air kiss to me.

A big kiss.
