8th District Watch – John Dawson Mailing

The John Dawson campaign has shared the 8th Congressional District hopeful’s post card. You see it below:

This appears to be a localized mailing to the Woodstock part of what is now Democrat Melissa Bean's district.

Dawson has served on the Crystal Lake High School District 155 Board.

8th District Watch – Dirk Beveridge Sends Small Business Piece

January 29, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 8th Congressional District, Andrew Berlin, David Nolan, Dirk Beveridge, Jack Rankin, Joe Musuraca, John Swan, Mail, Pepper Construction, Richard Pepper, Ron Bullock, Small Business

This is a mailing aimed at small businessmen, I think.

In 1996, I had a Crystal Lake mail list man put together a small business list. It was huge.

In Barrington Township, I’m remembering it was every fourth household.

In any event, you can see what went out below.  Click to enlarge any image.

A piece aimed at small businessmen. Note the quote from one of the more recognizable area small businessmen, Richard Pepper.

On the back is a quote from the 2009 Chairman of the Illinois Manufacturers Assocation, Ron Bullock, Chairman and Owne rof Bison Gear & Engineering Corp., plus endorsements from the Chicago Tribune, Daily Herald and Pioneer Press and a list of small businessmen.

If other candidates want to send me what they have mailed to voters, I’ll do my best to post it.

8th District Watch – Lake County Sheriff and State’s Attorney Endorse Maria Rodriguez for Congress

January 28, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 8th Congressional District, Lake County, Lake County Sheriff, Lake County State's Attorney, Maria Rodriguez, Mark Curran, Mike Waller

Maria Rodriguez

It’s tough to find something that is newsworthy at the end of a campaign, but I think Long Grove Village President Maria Rodriguez has managed to do it.

She announces today the endorsements of the top two law enforcement officials in Lake County.

Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran, who switched from Democrat to Republican when it was not a popular thing to do, and State’s Attorney Mike Waller.

Rodriguez is pretty much the Lake County Establishment’s choice, so many the endorsements are not a surprise to anyone but me.

If I had such endorsements early on, I would have used them before this point in the campaign.

Rodriguez’ press release follows:

Prominent Law Enforcement Officials Come Out
for Maria Rodriguez for Congress

LONG GROVE – Today, Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran and Lake County State’s Attorney Mike Waller endorsed Maria Rodriguez’s bid to win the Illinois’ 8th Congressional District Republican primary on February 2.

Mark Curran, the popular first term sheriff, stated in his endorsement,

“I’ve known Maria Rodriguez for years.  She is an effective, capable mayor with strong integrity.  When she makes a commitment, she always comes through.  Maria Rodriguez has made a commitment to the 8th district to be a strong fiscal conservative focused on protecting our nation and rebuilding our economy.  I am happy to join her team.”

Mike Waller is the Lake County State’s Attorney.  In endorsing Maria Rodriguez, Waller stated,

“We could use Mayor Rodriguez’s high level of integrity in Congress.  She will be a strong, honest voice for her constituents and put the people first, not herself.”

8th District Watch – Daily Herald Endorsed Dirk Beveridge

January 25, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 8th Congressional District, Daily Herald, Dirk Beveridge, Fund Raising

Using his Sunday endorsement by the Daily Herald as a starting off point, 8th Congressional District Republican candidate Dirk Beveridge issued this press release:

Republican Dirk Beveridge Soars to the Top of the List
The 8th Congressional Candidate Scores a New Endorsement

(Barrington, Ill.) January 25, 2010…This weekend, 8th Congressional District Republican candidate Dirk Beveridge further differentiated himself as the leader.  On Sunday, Dirk Beveridge earned the endorsement of the Daily Herald and significantly over-achieved the Republican field in fundraising as revealed in federal Election Commission financial reporting.

“In this race, our steady and positive leadership pace continues to put us miles ahead of the pack,” said Dirk Beveridge, an Ironman Triathlete, Business owner and community leader.

“We are staying well above competing candidates who are mired down in mud-slinging and cat fights over integrity, fiscal irresponsibility and ‘carpetbagger’ issues.  Endorsements from news media, private sector champions, and community leaders have identified me as the candidate who is the most electable against Melissa Bean and her Dem Machine; and as the most effective leader to take on an entrenched congress.”

The most recent endorsement from the Daily Herald told readers about the race in the 8th District:

“Most impressive, we think, is business owner and philanthropist Dirk Beveridge of Barrington and we offer him our endorsement… A mainstream conservative, Beveridge reflects traditional Republican philosophy, as do virtually all the candidates in this primary race.

“But more than most, he has an ability to articulate those views persuasively with the ability to get people to work positively together to solve problems. It is important to elect representatives willing to work across the aisles to find solutions; we believe Beveridge has the temperament to do that without abdicating his values.”

With the February 2nd primary around the corner, his campaign is closing in on the $200,000 fundraising mark.  More compelling is Beveridge’s long list of supporters from across his district, reflecting every-day people, small business owners and families who are contributing for the first time to a political campaign.

Dirk Beveridge, a mainstream conservative Republican candidate for the 8th Congressional District, is endorsed by the Daily Herald, The Chicago Tribune and The Pioneer Press Papers.  Additional endorsements include a “Job Creators’ Coalition,” Cuba Township Republican Party, and a Schaumburg Township Republican Organization “preferred candidate.”

8th District Watch – Former Joe Walsh Staffer Sues Candidate

January 22, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 2nd Appellate Court, 8th Congressional District, Cal Skinner, Cal Skinner Jr., Campaign Manager, Election Challenge, Glenn Seidenfeld, Joe Walsh, Keith Liscio, Ray Pempek, Robert McClory, Stan Narusis, Suit

“Been there, seen that”

was my reaction when I read former campaign manager Kieth Liscio’s press release about suing his former employer, 8th District GOP candidate Joe Walsh.

Back in 1982 when I unsuccessfully ran for Congress against incumbent U.S. Representative Robert McClory I was similarly sued. ( I carried McHenry County; McClory won the larger Lake and Kane Counties.)

Ray Pempek was my campaign manager. Funny guy. He’d hold my 24-toed gray cat Bijou up by his front legs, saying, “Dancing Cat.” (Keely Cat would not stand for that.)

He sued me claiming he had not been paid what his contract stipulated.

He hadn’t.

His attorney put him on the stand before Judge Michael J. Sullivan, where he laid out his case.

Upon cross examination, Pempek was asked if he performed the duties outlined in the contract, e.g., preparing the daily schedule, writing press releases, stuff like that.

Apparently he answered in the negative too many times because, when my attorney asked for a directed verdict, the judge granted it.

In a directed verdict, one side of the case says the other side has not proved its case well enough to merit putting on the other side.

This was the second such suit I’ve been involved in. When I won the 1966 Republican primary for McHenry County Treasurer by 72 votes out of almost 12,000 cast with a spread of 277 votes among the candidates, the second-place finisher sued for a recount. My attorney, Stan Narusis and I sat in the old second floor courtroom of the Woodstock Square Courthouse listening to the evidence. (Actually, we had more evidence of strange occurrences than the opposition, having had poll watchers in polling places where the judges had never seen them before.)

After the opposing counsel had completed his presentation–presenting absolutely no evidence, just argument–to Lake County Judge Glenn Seidenfeld, I leaned over to Stan and said, “He didn’t present any evidence. Why don’t we move to dismiss?’

Stan did and Judge Seidenfeld, who died at age 94 in 2008, dismissed the case. Maybe the then-Establishment thought I was so young and naive that I would agree to a recount once sued.

Yeah, right.

In any event, below is Lisco’s press release. Below it is Walsh’s response.

JOE WALSH SUED BY FORMER CAMPAIGN MANAGER
Suit Alleges 8th District Candidate Owes Former Friend $20,000

Morton Grove, IL — Today, Keith Liscio, former campaign manager for 8th Congressional District candidate Joe Walsh, sued the Walsh campaign for non-payment of $20,000 in campaign management services.  The suit was brought by Mr. Liscio in conjunction with his firm Patrickson-Hirsch Associates in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Municipal Department, Second District.

The suit alleges that Mr. Walsh hired Liscio to perform campaign management services in August of 2009, repeatedly paid for those services late, and eventually stopped paying altogether.  When the total amount owed exceeded $20,000 in December of last year, Mr. Liscio left the campaign.  Despite repeated attempts to resolve the matter and collect the debt, the Walsh campaign has refused to pay.

According to Mr. Liscio, “It is with deep regret and sadness that I take this action today.  I’ve tried to work out a payment plan with Joe both before and after my departure from the campaign and fully expected him to live up to his commitments to me and my family.  I’ve known Joe Walsh for over 14 years and am very disappointed that he has failed to meet this obligation.  I’m only bringing suit now as a last resort – he just refused to make a sincere effort to ensure payment of what was owed to me despite spending tens of thousands of dollars on other campaign expenditures.”

Liscio and Walsh met in 1995 when Walsh first ran for Congress in the 9th Congressional District against Sidney Yates.  Liscio volunteered for the campaign and eventually rose to the position of Communications Director where he brought Walsh’s campaign to national prominence.  When Walsh was weighing running in the 8th vs. the 10th District last year, he again sought Liscio’s advice and eventually hired him to run the campaign.  Liscio developed the campaign strategy which positioned Mr. Walsh as a “Tea Party” candidate, hired staff, and was in charge of executing the campaign plan prior to his departure.

To see a copy of the complaint filed with the court, contact Mr. Liscio at (847) 772-0525.

Here is 8th congressional district Joe Walsh’s response:

Regarding the suit, I’m saddened and surprised. Here’s the story and it’s not much of a story: I have a dispute with an ex campaign consultant over the performance of his work, we’ve been negotiating for over a month trying to come to a settlement, it appears he’s filed suit today.

This type of thing, as you know, goes on often in campaigns. I think it’s really regrettable that he decided to file suit a week and a half before the election and then reach out to the media to try and gin up a story. Seems like he’s trying to impact the election which just doesn’t seem right.

It’s an inside baseball story. We’re buliding a grassroots movement to take back this district and as of now, it appears we’re in the lead. Was hoping to settle something with Mr. Liscio, but as of now, its strictly a legal matter.

I’m focused on winning this campaign.

Chicago Sun-Times Endorses Maria Rodriguez

January 20, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 8th Congressional District, Maria Rodriguez, Melissa Bean

As the Chicago Tribune was endorsing Dirk Beveridge yesterday morning, the Chicago Sun-Times was endorsing Maria Rodriguez.

And, last night, Rodriguez sent out a letter to Melissa Bean that was so well written, that I post it below:

Congresswoman Bean,

I must admit it – you had me fooled for a while.

For years, you talked a good game.  You said all the right things.  You talked about how you were for fiscal responsibility…about how you would help those of us in local government to create new jobs and help get our constituents working again.

And then 2009 came.

I watched this year as, bill-by-bill, you started marching to the job-destroying agenda of Nancy Pelosi.

First was the incredible spending spree called the ’stimulus’ bill.  Have you met anyone who has gotten a job thanks to the stimulus?  I haven’t yet.  In fact, I haven’t met anyone who knows anyone who has gotten a job from that bill yet.  All we got was more debt for our grandchildren to pay off.

And then there was the vote for cap-and-trade – the largest energy tax in American history on every single household in the 8th district.  Is that supposed to help get our economy moving again?  We don’t think so.

Then the health care bill came up.  And if taking over the American health care system wasn’t enough, you even voted during the debate to use our tax dollars to pay for abortion!

Obviously, you’re out of touch.

You’re out of touch with the values of the 8th district and the reason you were elected to office.  Your true colors are showing, and we aren’t going to take it anymore.

I’m looking forward to February 3 and launching the campaign that will send you back to Barrington.  Don’t get too comfortable.

8th District Watch – Chicago Tribune Endorses Beveridge

January 19, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 8th Congressional District, Chicago Tribune, Dirk Beveridge, Endorsement, Melissa Bean

The biggest news in Illinois has endorsed Dirk Beveridge for Congress in the 8th Congressional District, which Melissa Bean now represents. The Beveridge press release follows:

Republican Candidate for Illinois’ 8th Congressional Seat
Builds Electability Profile for Battle
Against Vulnerable Democrat Incumbent, Melissa Bean

Barrington, Ill. – Today, the Dirk Beveridge for Congress campaign earned the Chicago Tribune’s Editorial Board endorsement.

“We are ready to take on Melissa Bean and the ‘Democratic machine’ in November,” said Dirk Beveridge, Republican candidate for the 8th Congressional Seat.  “An endorsement of this stature will take us far in our pursuit of the congressional seat on behalf of hard-working, conservative Americans in our district.” In their endorsement, printed January 19th, the Chicago Tribune said:

“The best is Barrington business owner Dirk Beveridge.”

The Chicago Tribune stated “Congress needs more people who understand what it takes to put people to work and how government puts up roadblocks to employment.”  Beveridge’s proven leadership, integrity, and initiative are among the characteristics separating his candidacy.

The Chicago Tribune endorsement is on the heels of last week’s Pioneer Press Newspaper endorsement of Dirk Beveridge:

We find Beveridge to be the best at representing the views of all members of the party…Beveridge will do the best job of attracting voters that Republicans need to win in November.

Dirk was also endorsed last month by the Cuba Township Republican Committee and was chosen as a “preferred candidate” by the Schaumburg Township Republican Organization.

“Following intensive interviews and presentations from all Republican candidates, Dirk Beveridge rose to the top for his smart, commonsense stand on re-building the American dream,” announced Tom Gooch, Chairman, Cuba Township Republican Committee.  “In addition to his priority position on fiscal responsibility and limited government, Cuba Township republicans recognize Beveridge as a strong candidate with an organization in place to beat the Democrat incumbent, Melissa Bean.”

Dirk Beveridge is a common sense conservative dedicated to returning the U.S. economy to hard-working Americans, restoring the American Dream by cutting reckless spending and political earmarks, “Big Government” intrusion and restoring America to a culture of independence, not dependence on Government entitlements.

Just two weeks ago, the Beveridge Campaign announced endorsements from a wide variety of industry leaders and entrepreneurs: “Dirk understands business issues and job creation,” explains Ron Bullock, Chairman and Owner, Bison Gear & Engineering Corp. and 2009 Chair, Illinois Manufacturers Association.  “Our current Representative doesn’t, and we can change that. Dirk Beveridge will represent the 8th District with common-sense conservative values.”

“I am convinced that Dirk Beveridge can beat Melissa Bean and has what it takes to get the job done right in Washington,” explained Andrew Berlin, Chairman and CEO, Berlin Packaging and recipient, Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame and a “Job Creators Coalition endorser.”  “Dirk is a proven leader; he knows how to be effective and how to make a real difference.  I know when he is in Washington, he will act on his convictions and a strong moral compass to restore our American dream.”

Dirk Beveridge (48), of Barrington, is the owner of a small business who helps large national organizations grow and expand.  Dirk is known as a private sector champion and a valued community problem solver for his leadership of  ‘We Do Care,’ a six-year-old nonprofit organization that supports, thanks and celebrates veterans, soldiers and their families.

8th District Watch – Dirk Beveridge Endorsed by Pioneer Press

January 14, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 8th Congressional District, Dirk Beveridge, Endorsement, Pioneer Press

The following was received this morning:

“We are breaking through the clutter and clearing a path to victory–in February AND in November!  This Republican primary is about the candidate who can be most effective in Washington restoring the conservative principles set forth by our Founding Fathers AND this is about the candidate who can first beat Melissa Bean.  The Pioneer Press, whose family of papers covers much of the 8th District communities, agrees–I am that candidate.”

In its endorsement, the editorial board points to this differentiation from the other Republican candidates:

“Part of the difference between he and other candidates is his ability and willingness to work with others. He has demonstrated that ability by helping found a 501(c)3 organization called We Do Care. That Barrington-based organization provides ways for citizens to say thank you to military veterans and personnel and their families for their service and sacrifice with a number of community activities.”

While Pioneer Press has pulled out of McHenry County, it does own the paper of record in Barrington and has other weekly publications in the 8th congressional district.

8th District Watch – McHenry County Board Chairman Ken Koehler Endorses John Dawson

January 13, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 8th Congressional District, John Dawson, Ken Koehler

John Dawson

McHenry County Board Chairman Ken Koehler

The campaign of 8th congressional district GOP candidates John Dawson has announced the support of “the popular” McHenry County Board Chairman Ken Koehler.

“The popular” comes from the press release, which you see below:

Ken Koehler endorses John Dawson

John Dawson continues to gain support in his race to win the Republican Primary election for Congressman in the Illinois 8th Congressional District.

Ken Koehler, the popular McHenry County Board Chairman, today added his name to the list of those endorsing John to win the Primary and then to the General Election to unseat Democrat incumbent Melissa Bean.  Ken has served for nine years on the McHenry County Board, the last five years as Chairman.  He is seeking reelection this year.

“John fully understands the major issues of the day on jobs and the economy, and the two great concerns of transportation and groundwater issues facing McHenry County.  He will make a worthy ally to 16th District Congressman Don Manzullo in addressing not only the challenges facing the nation but their adjoining congressional districts as well.”

= = = = =
I’m not sure it makes any difference, but Koehler lives in Congressman Don Manzullo’s district.
