CTA Bans Political Ads

May 12, 2013 By: Cal Skinner Category: Ad, Chicago Transit Authority, CTA

Part of the Friday Scott Santis anit-CTA cartoon in the Chicago Tribune.

If you want to advance your political viewpoints on the CTA, too bad.

If you want to advance your political viewpoints on the CTA, too bad. “CTA trains and buses are not public forums for debate.”

My understanding is that courts have decreed the highest form of speech is political speech.

Now the Chicago Transit Authority has banned political speech from the ads on and in its buses.

If one were challenging authority, might advertising placards on the CTA be an effective advertising tool?

Don’t expect to see an ACLU suit on this issue.

Linda Moore Advertises in Northwest Herald

January 26, 2013 By: Cal Skinner Category: Ad, Grafton Township, Grafton Township Supervisor, Linda Moore

Lucky for me I saw the Northwest Herald today.

And, even found a copy to take home.

Inside on the obituary page was an ad placed by Linda Moore, who is running for re-election for Grafton Township Supervisor.

The ad was on the obituary page, which some might consider an omen.

On the other hand, those who read obituaries are probably more likely to vote than those who don’t.

Northwest Herald Circulation Figures

December 01, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Ad, Advertising, Circulation, Crystal Lake, Northwest Herald

Circulation figures have been released by the Audit Bureau of Circulation and the Northwest Herald is down a bit.

Sunday circulation has held relatively stable at more than 34,000 since 2009, while daily circulation had dropped about about 2,000.

September 30, 2012, circulation figures for the Northwest Herald.

Comparable figures for 2011 are below:

Northwest Herald circulation figures from September 30, 2011.

Information from 2010 showed weekday circulation is 30,950 and Sunday’s papers at 34,391, my article reports.

The 2009 and 1993 information is here.

Now or Never PAC (NON-PAC) Justifies Ad Tammy Duckworth Wants Off the Air

October 01, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Ad, Joe Walsh, Now or Never PAC, Tammy Duckworth, Television Ad, TV Ad

A press release from the Now or Never PAC:

NOW OR NEVER PAC

DUCKWORTH (IL-8) TRIES TO GET NOW OR NEVER PAC AD PULLED, CLAIMING IT IS FALSE DESPITE OVERWHELMING PROOF THAT AD IS FACTUAL

Tammy Duckworth

Democratic Congressional candidate Tammy Duckworth (IL-8) is attempting to get ads produced by Now or Never PAC pulled from the airwaves.

Duckworth has been contacting stations claiming that the the PAC’s ad makes “false claims” about Duckworth’s record and is not “accurate.”

The ad in question, entitled “Better Off,” was released by Now or Never PAC last week:

NON-PAC Television Advertisement: “Better Off”

Duckworth: I think that the people in this district, and especially businesses, are better off.

VO: Better off?  Come on, Tammy!

Hard-working families and businesses are struggling.

Better off?

Duckworth support Governor Blagojevich’s budget that increased taxes and spending by billions.

As a “Blago” appointee, an audit found Duckworth was guilty of misusing or misreporting four-million dollars of taxpayer money.

Tammy Duckworth, a Blagojevich pal who supports higher taxes and wasteful spending.

Maybe Tammy’s better off, but we aren’t.

VO: Now or Never PAC is responsible for the content of this advertising

Duckworth is trying to discredit the advertisement and Now or Never PAC by calling the television spot “false.”  But, the following source information makes it the case against Duckworth clear.

Claim: Tammy Duckworth thinks that the people in her district, and especially businesses, are better off.

Fact: On September 14th, 2012, during a televised 8th Congressional District Debate on WFLD Fox Chicago, Tammy Duckworth said “I think that the people in this district, and especially businesses, are better off.”

Claim: Tammy Duckworth supported Governor Blagojevich’s higher taxes and spending.

Fact:  Tammy Duckworth Advocated for Governor Blagojevich’s Fiscal Year 2008 Budget.  Governor Blagojevich’s 2008 budget included a “gross receipts tax” on businesses, and called for spending to be increased by $2.3 Billion over the previous year’s spending.

Claim: Tammy Duckworth was an appointee of Governor Blagojevich, and an audit found that Tammy Duckworth was guilty of misusing or misreporting $4 million of taxpayer funds.

Fact: Tammy Duckworth was appointed by former Governor Rod Blagojevich, and was the Executive Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs during the period of time in which an audit was conducted by the Illinois Office of the Auditor General.  The audit of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs uncovered that more than $4 million in taxpayer funds had been misused or improperly reported.

2.    Tammy Duckworth was the Executive Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs from 12/15/06 – 2/6/09, and she was the Executive Director during the period in which the Illinois Office of the Auditor General conducted an audit: http://www.auditor.illinois.gov/Audit-Reports/Compliance-Agency-List/DVA/FY08-DVA-Comp-full.pdf. Pages 1 and 77.

3.    The Illinois Office of the Auditor General found more than $4 million in misused or misreported funds in an audit of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs while Tammy Duckworth was the Executive Director of the Department: http://www.auditor.illinois.gov/Audit-Reports/Compliance-Agency-List/DVA/FY08-DVA-Comp-full.pdf.  Pages 11 – 43.

4.    The Illinois Office of the Auditor General states on Page 7 of their audit that “The management of State of Illinois, Department of Veterans’ Affairs – Central Office is responsible for compliance with these requirements.”  http://www.auditor.illinois.gov/Audit-Reports/Compliance-Agency-List/DVA/FY08-DVA-Comp-full.pdf  Page 7.

5.    Therefore, Tammy Duckworth was the Executive Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs, appointed by Gov. Blagojevich, during the period of time in which Illinois Office of the Auditor General found more than $4 million in misused or misreported funds.  Further, the Illinois Office of the Auditor General expressed in their audit that it is the responsibility of the Management of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs Central Office to comply with the regulations which were found deficient in the audit.  As the Executive Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Tammy Duckworth was the manager for the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs, and therefore she was responsible for the deficiencies found in the audit.

The Now or Never Political Action Committee (NON-PAC) will fight to keep the ads on the air, despite Duckworth’s convenient memory-lapse about her time at the Department of Veterans Affairs and her comments that people in her state and district are “better off.”

McHenry Mayor Sue Low’s Campaign Off and Running

July 19, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Ad, Endorsement, Mayor, McHenry, Sue Low

McHenry Mayor Sue Low expresses her opinion at a council meeting.

This might be called the intimidation stage of next spring’s local election campaigns.

It’s when candidates flex their muscles, so to speak, trying to convince potential opponents a race isn’t worth the effort.

Evidence of this appeared in a Northwest Herald ad two days ago in support of the re-election of McHenry Mayor Sue Low.

I’m told that former Mayor Steve Cuda has been contemplating running against Low, but he did not reply to a phone call I made a couple of weeks ago asking about a potential candidacy.

Another motivation for the ad could be as easy to understand as supporters wanting to encourage Low to run for Mayor again.  Perhaps some people thought she might be considering retiring and valued her service so much that they wanted to tell her in a public way.

In any event, the ad can be seen below and the signers are extracted under it.  I am told that there was insufficient room for the names of an additional 100 supporters.

Message of the Day – A Newspaper Ad

April 08, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Ad, Christ, Christian, Easter, Hobby Lobby, Newspaper, Newspaper ad

Today’s Message of the Day is a Hobby Lobby newspaper ad.  It ran in both newspapers we subscribe to, the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune.

Hobby Lobby wears its Christian leanings on its sleeve, so to speak.

Listen to the music in the stores and it’s inspirational.

And on Easter and Christmas in years in which the company has sufficient money, full page ads run in newspapers.

Here’s this Easter’s ad:

Monument Ads – CBS

November 28, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Ad, Advertising, CBS, Crystal Lake, Monument, Tax Increment Financing, Tax Increment Financing District, TIF

Channel Two broadcasts into McHenry County.

Maybe CBS would pop for an institutional ad on the four $16,000 TIF monuments on Route 14.

Crystal Lake may be near the edge of the Chicago television broadcasting signal, but most people can get it by cable.

Monument Ads – Blackhawks

November 27, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Ad, Advertising, Crystal Lake, Monument, Tax Increment Financing, Tax Increment Financing District, TIF

If a hockey team can win the Stanley Cup, surely it has earned enough money to pay for ads on Crystal Lake’s four Virginia Street Tax Increment Financing District stone monuments.

Chicago's own Blackhawks need to reach out to the suburbs.

Monument Ads – National Basketball Association

November 26, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Ad, Advertising, Crystal Lake, Monument, NBA, Tax Increment Financing, Tax Increment Financing District, TIF

With the contract problems between owners and players, the NBA might be looking for institutional advertising.

What better place that the four $16,000 Virginia Street Tax Increment Financing District boundary markers?

If there is money for player raises, surely there must be money for advertising to help bail out the Crystal Lake City Council from its $64,000 expenditure for four stone pillars.
