Scheurer Challenges Lake County Eye to Put Up or Shut Up

September 24, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bill Scheurer, Lake County Eye

One of the writers of Lake County Eye apparently gets off on making derogatory comments about yours truly.

When I wrote a story about Bill Scheurer’s possible candidacy in the GOP primary in the 14th congressional district, an article appeared making fun of me and Scheurer.

“The rumor strikes your LakeCountyEye as either disinformation, pure &
simple — or the by-product of senescence, fueled by wishful thinking.
Either way, the rumor is so bizarre your LakeCountyEye would pay money just
to see it happen.”

Scheuer responded to a comment with his usual wit:

Yeah, now if only there were a Democrat running in IL-14 who could raise enough cash to talk about those issues. The tragedy is that once Walsh beats Hultgren — and I have no doubt that the charismatic conservative will win a low turnout conservative primary — he’ll be unstoppable, if for no other reason than that he won’t have a serious Democratic challenger.

Bill Scheurer Exploring Republican Run in New 14th District Congressional

September 21, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bill Scheurer, Joe Walsh, Randy Hultgren

Former 2010 Green Party and 2006 Moderate Party congressional candidate Bill Scheurer is considering running for Congress as a Republican this year.

A good argument can be made that 8th District Republican Joe Walsh would not have beaten incumbent Democrat Melissa Bean with Scheurer’s having been on the ballot.  Look at the 2010 election returns below:

Bill Scheurer

Incumbent Joe Walsh wasn’t the only political threat banished to the new IL-14TH Congressional District by the recent Democrat-controlled gerrymandering.

The newly drawn district border also dips down into Lindenhurst – splitting the tiny village in half – to put former candidate Bill Scheurer’s longtime home of 33 years in the new district.

The DonkeyPhant returns. Click to read the messages.

Scheurer’s congressional runs in 2006 and 2010 in the old IL-8TH Congressional District (where Walsh is now the incumbent) gathered enough of the vote to make him somewhat of a “swing state” factor for independent voters unhappy with both parties.

McHenry County Blog has learned that this year he is exploring a run in the Republican Party primary.

In a comment to our story about Joe Walsh’s decision to seek re-election in the new IL-14TH District, Scheurer had this to say:

“I’m looking for people who could help kickstart a campaign to give GOP primary voters an alternative to the two ‘Tea Party’ candidates.

“Not that I have anything against tea or a good party — it’s just that I’m more of a diet cola guy for my caffeine jolt.”

He is exploring whether GOP voters would consider his “Cola Party” campaign as a refreshing alternative.

Haven’t found any official candidacy or website, but Scheurer has maintained the Facebook page from his 2010 campaign and actively posts his alternative populist views there on a fairly regular basis: http://www.facebook.com/RisingTideCampaign

This raises a most interesting question.

Are area Republicans open to supporting a more independent-minded candidate as an alternative to the “Tea Party” forces that have taken over their party?

The boundaries of the new 14th District can be seen below:

Joe Walsh Gains 5 Votes from McHenry County Absentees and Provisional Votes

November 16, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 8th Congressional District, Bill Scheurer, Joe Walsh, Melissa Bean

It’s “Plus 5″ in the counting of outstanding ballots in McHenry County’s portion of the 8th Congressional District.

One ballot came from Great Britain, as one can tell from the stamps.

Here’s how the thirty extra district ballots were cast

  • 17 – Joe Walsh
  • 12 – Melissa Bean
  • 1 – Bill Scheurer

Analysis of the NW Herald’s Analysis of the Melissa Bean Loss to Joe Walsh

November 14, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bill Scheurer, Joe Walsh, Melissa Bean, Obama Care

A subhead in the 2,400-word analysis starting on the front page of the Sunday Northwest Herald made me smile.

It read,

“Banking on Bean”

Although probably not the copy editor’s intention, it reminded me of how much money that incumbent Democrat Melissa Bean had managed to obtain from the banking, insurance and real estate industries in five+ years in office.

Contributions from Melissa Bean's top five industries.

This was an Establishment versus Outsider election.

The donations show that.

Melissa Bean got most of her money from Political Action Committees; Joe Walsh got most of his money from individuals.

Look at the percentage of PAC contributions for Bean and Walsh. 62% for Bean, a minuscule 2% for Walsh.

The most astounding conclusion offered in the NWH’s analysis of Melissa Bean’s disastrous campaign was that Joe Walsh somehow benefited from receiving no assistance from the State or National Republican Parties or their deep-pocketed allies.

Oh, really?

Whatever happened to money being “the mother’s milk” of campaigns?

The campaign was also a litmus test contest on abortion policy between those who favor no restrictions and those who disagree strongly with that position.

I think the Daily Herald’s and NW Herald’s long-standing animus toward virtually everyone who takes a Pro-Life position explains so, so much of the negative coverage of Joe Walsh’s campaign.

No mention of that issue in the article.

No mention of the gender difference and how women typically have about a five percentage point advantage in the suburbs. That the “plus” of being a woman on the ballot didn’t materialize wasn’t mentioned in the article.

The incumbent versus non-incumbent difference was addressed.

That Bean acted like Republican Phil Crane when Bean beat him was addressed, but missing was that Bean won her second time around.

The first time the score was 95,275 to 70,626. Not even close.

Living outside the 8th Congressional District by a wee bit thanks to subsequent reapportionment requested by Crane, Bean won the second time out by 139,792 to 130,601 after a storm of money was pumped into her campaign.

One outside group pumped in about three-quarters of a million dollars.

To work the precincts, Congressman Rahm Emmauel sent in Chicago “Hired Truck” guys. At least that’s the word I got. If so, that would perhaps explain the really bad votes Bean took after Barack Obama took office as President.

I should point out that Walsh’s initially living outside the district was emphasized in the article without a mention that Bean has had over six years to move into the 8th District, but has not done so.

The contest was also between a liberal and a conservative.

Everyone knows which was which, but the NWH article does not contain the word “liberal.”

Liberal issues she supported are mentioned, but not the “L” word.

What seems so, so strange is that the word “conservative” is not used to describe Walsh. It’s only use is in the phrase “fiscally conservative,” referring to Bean.

How someone who voted for the stimulus package could be described thusly is beyond me.

Adequate coverage is given to Bean’s refusing to meet with the public.  I though the NWH gave that aspect of her campaign too little attention prior to the election–especially considering how Bean hammered Phil Crane with the same criticism when she won in 2004.

How such rich irony was not mentioned every time Bean ducked an event is beyond me.

But, of course, the NWH favored Bean’s re-election.

It is pretty obvious that Green Party candidate Bill Scheurer played a role in Joe Walsh's election.

Completely missing is the role Green Party candidate Bill Scheurer played in electing Walsh.  He certainly got more than the margin of victory.

Campaign techniques like the YouTube pitches and Walsh’s email list are mentioned, but not teased out in this the longest article I think I have ever seen in the NWH. Walsh, by the way, had 4,000 people on his email list.

Bean’s TV ads were mention–too late in the campaign to define Walsh–but no one was found to speculate that they may have helped those who wanted to support the national Republican Party agenda to discover Walsh’s candidacy.

There are marvelous interviews telling how Walsh went looking for a congressional district in which to run and how one first-time volunteer was stimulated to work full-time for Walsh after she voted for Obama Care after he advised her not to do so.

You have read in both papers, led by the Daily Herald, all the negative information that could be found on Joe Walsh.

Mike Tryon

The Democratic Party chairman in McHenry County was found for a comment, but Mike Tryon was not.  Strange to interview the losing side, but not the one that won.

A nice catch was that former CBS Channel Two President Joe Ahern contributed to Bean.

Have you ever read the extent of Melissa Bean’s “business” background?

Didn’t think so.

“Catman” summed up the analysis this way:

It was a very disappointing article, simply rehashing everything that has already been written in the media and on blogs.

As far as a side-by-side comparison “analysis” the article only compared a couple precincts, again showing the Herald’s lack of doing any real homework and just wasting valuable newsprint space.

They could have at least admitted that they, too, missed the Walsh groundswell that was happening right before their (Bean blinders) eyes.

“You may want to know” commented under the same post,

The NWH article could have been titled

“Bean Blinders and the Bean Bunker.”

How appropriate that Bean didn’t want to be quoted directly for the article.

Gus Philpott Gives Green Party Power Party Status in McHenry County

November 11, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bill Scheurer, Establilshed Party, Frank Wedig, Green Party, Gus Philpott, Scott Summers

Gus Philpott

To obtain “Established” party status, one must have a candidate who receives five percent of the vote.

When Rich Whitney received about ten percent for Governor when he ran against Rod Blagojevich and Judy Baar Topinka, he allowed Green Party candidates to get on the ballot statewide with very, very few signatures.

To run for Sheriff, Gus Philpott only had to get 19 signatures.

Preliminary results show he got just over five percent of the total ballots cast for Sheriff.

Green Party candidate for Sheriff Gus Philpott got just over 5% of the vote, enough to qualify the party countywide for easy ballot access.

So, anyone wanting to run for county office, countywide or county board (see below for correction), won’t have to make a large effort to get on the ballot.

= = = = =

Correction: I thought to check this out with the State Board of Elections, but state employees didn’t work on Veterans Day.  I have now been told that only for countywide offices is the Green Party considered an “established” party.  That means county board candidates would have to gather a much larger number of signatures, except in the 5th district.

= = = = =

The problem is the Green Party has not gathered much momentum in McHenry County.

District 5 county board candidate Frank Wedig received 8.6%

Green Party candidate got 8% of the vote in 2010.

And former McHenry County College Board President Scott Summers received 4.29% in his quest for State Treasurer.

Harvard resident Scott Summers received over 4% of the vote, while his running mate for Governor only got 3.4% here.

8th District Congressional candidate received just 3% however.

But for a party to grow, one needs troops on the ground or money.

The only precinct committeemen listed in the McHenry County Yearbook are Summers and Wedig.

With the number of Environmental Defenders in McHenry County, one might have thought there was an opportunity to build a local party based on local issues, but it has not happened yet.

Walsh Sends Email

November 03, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 8th Congressional District, Bill Scheurer, Joe Walsh, Melissa Bean

WGN-TV recognised Joe Walsh is ahead. From this graphic one might guess that Melissa Bean would have won if Green Party candidate Bill Scheurer had not been in the race.

As the mainstream media begins to figure out that Joe Walsh may have actually beaten Melissa Bean, Walsh has sent out the following email:

Dear Friends:

Thank you all for staying up so late last night. Victory is at hand. After counting up the remaining Cook County ballots today, we have a lead that is insurmountable. We are waiting for our opponent to acknowledge that.

God Bless and you will hear back from us very soon.
Joe

Here are the returns from all of the precincts, reported between 9 and 10 PM:

These results show a 553 vote lead for Joe Walsh.

Vote Leader Joe Walsh Issues Statement

November 03, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 8th Congressional District, Bill Scheurer, Joe Walsh, Melissa Bean

Joe Walsh was having a good time at the McHenry Fiesta Days Parade.

Here’s the press release that was sent out about 4 AM:

(Grayslake, IL) Joe Walsh addressed over 500 volunteers and supporters at their victory celebration in Wauconda, IL at the Mill Creek Banquets and stated

“Tonight was a victory for the people of the 8th district and, though it was close, we now feel confident that the remaining precincts will only strengthen our margin of victory.”

Walsh looks forward to a quick reporting of the few remaining open precincts and will soon begin the preparation work for a respectful transition to represent the people of the 8th district.

The latest results posted by the Chicago Tribune are below:

Joe Walsh leads Melissa Bean by 797 votes with 2% of the precincts outstanding, as well as early and absentee votes from at least McHenry County.

Sun-Times, AP Notice Close 8th District Race

November 03, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 8th Congressional District, Bill Scheurer, Joe Walsh, Melissa Bean

Joe Walsh was clapping in the Johnsburg parade. Now it appears he has something else to clap about.

It didn’t happen until after the polls closed, but, hey, you take what you can get.

The Chicago Sun-Times has finally noticed that there was a hot race out here in the boonies.

It and the other mainstream media enablers wouldn’t criticize Melissa Bean for refusing to hold town meetings last summer on health care reform.

They refused to criticize her dodge and duck approach to campaigning.

They wouldn’t remind voters that she was campaigning exactly the same way that Republican Phil Crane did when she defeated him six years ago.

And they certainly wouldn’t endorse someone who said he was part of the Tea Party movement.

Much too radical for little liberals to even notice.

Until now.

Well, better late than never.

The Sun-Times headline mentions Bean is “in a nail-biter.”

Somehow I don’t think Joe Walsh is a nail-biter.

Melissa Bean and her supporters, some all the way from Maryland, I don’t know.

Well, it’s time for bed.

At 1:30 AM, Joe Walsh is leading Melissa Bean by 797 votes out of 198,887 counted thus far.

96,636 for Walsh to 95,839 for Bean.

Green Party candidate Bill Scheurer garnered 6,412 votes.

Add Scheurer’s to Bean’s and she would be a clear winner.

Now, I notice that Associated Press had decided to venture out of Downtown Chicago and decided the 8th District is worth noticing:

A fifth Illinois race – between Democratic U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean and Republican Joe Walsh in Illinois’ 8th congressional district – remained unexpectedly too close call early Wednesday.

Tribune Finally Admits 8th District Race Close

November 02, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bill Scheurer, Joe Walsh, Melissa Bean

Joe Walsh

Read the following paragraph and ask yourself why the Chicago Tribune didn’t pick up on the closeness of the race before.

“In the closer-than-expected contest, northwest suburban 8th Congressional District, Democratic U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean had 49 percent to 48 percent for Republican challenger Joe Walsh with 91 percent of precincts counted. It was about a 1,200-vote margin with Cook County votes primarily left out, where Bean leads. Walsh was underfunded and Bean aired TV attack ads on him near the end of the campaign.”

If they had, some of the national deep pockets might have kicked in some money.

Here are the results as of 9:48 PM:

A virtual tie is being reported by Associated Press.

Tom Roeser Sees Joe Walsh Win

November 02, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 8th Congressional District, Bill Scheurer, Joe Walsh, Melissa Bean, Russ Stewart, Tom Roeser

Tom Roeser

WLS-Radio Sunday night talk show host Tom Roeser publishes election predictions today on his blog, along with those of Russ Stewart.

He is the first I have seen predict that Joe Walsh will beat Melissa Bean in the 8th Congressional District.

U. S. House Races Nationally. Stewart sees Republicans gaining 50 seats and taking control. Roeser sees the gain at 70 seats. In Illinois Stewart predicts GOP wins in the 11th with Kinzinger; the 14th with Hultgren; and the 17thwith Schilling besides holding the 10th with Dold. Roeser sees all of the abovementioned winning plus Joe Walsh (8th) over Bean and Joel Pollak (9th) over Schakowsky in a big upset.

Of course, there was the WeAskAmerica poll on Oct. 31st that showed Walsh ahead of Bean 48.7% to 45.7%.

The New York Times’ Nate Silver adjusted his odds that Bean would beat Walsh downward slightly.

The odds maker at the New York Times gives Melissa Bean an 88% chance of re-election. That's down from 905.% before the poll results were released.

The race will have over a seven point spread, according to the blogster:

52.9% to 45.5%

That would leave only 1.6% for Green Party candidate Bill Scheurer.
