These are the 6th District Delegate candidates:

These are the 6th District alternates:

None are from McHenry County, but these are the folks who will be on the ballot, if they get enough signatures by the deadline of Friday, January 6th.

In the 8th District, the candidates’ for Delegate are

  • Michael Machlet – Schaumburg
  • David J. Rickert – Elgin
  • John Schmitz – Bloomingdale

10th District Rick Santorum Delegate candidate poses with former State Rep. and GOP National Committeewoman Penny Pullen, one of those working to put together a slate of Republican Convention Delegates and Alternates.

  • Ed Southwell – Elgin

  2. Paul – 22%
  3. Santorum – 16%
  4. Gingrich – 14%
  5. Perry – 11%

Barb Wheeler State Rep. Fund Raiser Successful

July 30, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Abortion, Barb Wheeler, Barbara Wheeler, Bonnie Quirke, Brent Smith, Bryan Winter, Campaign Contributions, Campaign Finance, Fund Raiser, Fund Raising, Irene Napier, Joe Gottemoller, Kent Gaffney, Mike Chmiel, Mike Shorten, Nancy Gonsiorek, Pro-Choice, Pro-Life

About a fourth of the crowd at the rural Nunda Township estate that hosted Barbara Wheeler's fund raiser.

An impressive crowd turned out for McHenry County Board member Barb Wheeler’s fund raiser for her State Rep. campaign.

It's been a long time since I dipped into Lake County politics. Wheeler has no choice since just over 50% of the new 64th District is across the county line. Bryan Winter, who is running for Lake County State's Attorney, was accompanied by his wife Judge Diane Winter. Former McHenry County State's Attorney candidate Dan Regna can be seen in the foreground. He was not the only one from Lake County present.

From those attending, I concluded that she will be the favorite of most of the McHenry County part of the 64th District that she seeks to represent.

Donna Kurtz chatted with Duane Sokolosky, an Algonquin Township GOP Precinct Committeeman.

There were candidates galore, including several thinking seriously about running for County Board, incumbents running for re-election, plus those interested in Grafton Township governmental slots.  Of significance is that none of Grafton Township is within the 64th District.

McHenry County Board member Tina Hill visited with Crystal Lake Grade School Board member Nancy Gonsiorek.

The idea of fund raisers is to raise money, of course.

Newly-appointed State Rep. Kent Gaffney and his wife Elizabeth conversed with Right to Life leaders Bonnie Quirke (Lake County) and Irene Napier (McHenry County). Like Wheeler's, Gaffney's district straddles the Lake-McHenry County line.

There was no set price, so there is no way anyone outside of Wheeler’s campaign knows how much was contributed, but there are several observations that can be made.

Barb Wheeler greets McHenry County Circuit Judge Mike Chmiel.

A successful fund raiser has to keep down expenses. The private home eliminated the need to rent a hall.

In this view of people attending Barb Wheeler's fund raiser I see former Crystal Lake City Council candidate Mike Shorten on the far left.

Beer, wine, soft drinks and water were provided, as were Italian beef sandwiches. There were some other light snacks.

How late did the party, which started at 6, last? This was my last shot. You seen Nunda Township Republican Party Chairman Brent Smith and Joe Gottemoller well after sunset.

The execution of the event pretty much guaranteed the net would be as large as possible.

Although it doesn’t make much of a story, those who stay home and send money can increase the total contributed at events like this.

District 3 County Board Candidates Sending Mailings

January 27, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Barb Wheeler, Barbara Wheeler, Bonnie Quirke, Craig Steagall, Illinois Citizens for Life, Karen Tynis, McHenry County Board., McHenry County Right-to-Life, Nick Provenzano, Pro-Life, Suzane Basssi, Tom Morrison

Here you see conservative challenger Tom Morrison campaigning against Palatine's liberal State Rep. Suzie Bassi. Any local candidates hoofing it? Send me a photo, but don't look at the camera and be at a door with a potential constitute.I thought you might want to see the mail that candidates or those being courted for their vote have sent out in District 3. (If I have missed any, I ask the candidates to email it me.)

Candidates for the District 3 McHenry County Board seats are starting to send out mailings.

I thought you might want to see the ones that I have found.

Any candidate in any district who would like to have a bit wider coverage of their direct mail campaign is welcome to email me what is sent out. And, if you as a reader receive a mailing and will be so kind as to scan it for me, I’ll be appreciative and try to get it up.

With the Chicago Democrats having set the primary election in one of the coldest times of the year to protect incumbents from challengers, the postman really is the precinct committeeman.

Not many voters will see a candidate knocking on doors like the challenger to Republican State Rep. Suzie Bassi of Palatine, two districts away from most of us.

So, let’s take a look at some District 3 mailings for county board.

Here’s a mailing from District 2 challenger Craig Steagall.  It arrived last week.

This post card from District 3 challenger Craig Steagall appears to be an introduction of the candidate and theme of the campaign--"Fresh Leadership." It also includes the campaign web site www.craigsteagall.com

Here’s the other side.

It contains biographical information. I'm guessing the yellow patch is where the address and bulk mail permit goes. Steagall discloses his successful business background, his family's service to the agriculture community, a bit about his role in building the Prairie Ridge High School soccer fields and his role in the Continental Little League.

The piece from District 3 challenger Karen Tynis is next.

This is the address side of a Karen Tynis mailing. The highlight, of course, is the photo of her family. She talks of her business background and being a community volunteer.

This is the only post card I have seen so far that has to be rotated to be read. I don't whether that is good or bad, but tend to think it is good because it is different from the others.

On this postcard, the volunteer work mentioned on the address side is fleshed out, including volunteering for Prairie Ridge High School and Club Fusion volley ball, the Salvation Army, the Prairie Grove Parks Dept.  and the Shepherd of the Hills Church.

Tynis lists her goals as

  • Establish new business relationships for the county that encourages growth without hurting the taxpayers
  • Help keep existing businesses in McHenry County
  • Lowering taxes
  • Reduce government spending
  • Establish an open door policy for residents
  • Community safety

Tynis also lists her business experience with Tynis Concrete and KT Leasing, two property owners associations and ten years of real estate closings.

Barb Wheeler, the only incumbent running, is the only one to have sent out a letter.

It includes her web site www.BarbaraWheeler2010.com and gives her phone number–815-245-4556.

She tells of her endorsement by the Northwest Herald and being described as an “INDEPENDENT” three times.

“I am a proud member of the Republican Party; however, in local government that doesn’t always mean I will vote in lock step with the party leaders.”

Here’s her closing pitch:

“The economy is the number one issue facing the county, state and country. Because of McHenry County’s fiscal discipline, our county has consistently passed a balanced budget.

“In the last five years, we have actually seen our county’s portion of the tax bill go down.

“Further, I have proposed initiatives not only to attract and to retain businesses, but also to help McHenry County businesses expand and grow. These efforts will improve business and employment opportunities.

“Obviously, the county can’t act alone; we will need the collaboration of the Economic Development Council, the McHenry County Community College, as well as other industry leaders.

“My consensus building experience will help to bring these groups to the table for the betterment of McHenry County.”

Finally, here is a mailing from former county board member Nick Provenzano, who is seeking a return to the county board.

It is a piece aimed at Pro-Lifers. It is the most professional looking piece I have seen aimed at that important segment of Republican primary voters. I wonder what the distribution was.

Clearly, District 3 county board candidate Nick Provenzano is positioning himself to be "THE" Pro-Life candidate.

Nick Provenzano touts his endorsement by the Illinois Citizens for Life, Irene Napier, Chairman of McHenry County Right to Life and Bonnie Quirke, Chairman of the Lake County Right to Life, plus the Northwest Herald. He includes his web site address.

Pro-Lifers Meet in Crystal Lake

December 08, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bonnie Quirke, Christine Radogno, Dan Duffy, Darlene Senger, Irene Napier, John Cavaletto. Bill Brady, John Cullerton, Kirk Dillard, Mama Rini's Restaurant, Pam Althoff, Pro-Life, Ralph Rivera

A roomful of Northern Illinois Pro-Lifers met at Mama Rini’s Restaurant Saturday for breakfast to hear Illinois Citizens for Life lobbyist Ralph Rivera explain what happened during the election and what how the group’s cause could be advanced.

“We have very hostile administrations in Washington and Springfield. We need to organize like in the early days. We need to dig in,”

Libertyville’s Bonnie Quirke told the crowd.

As to the situation in Springfield, Rivera said,

“In the Illinois Senate, there was a wash. State Senator Bill Peterson was replaced by Dan Duffy. He’s not as good as (State Senator Bill) Peterson, but on the bills in Springfield, he’ll be OK.”

“In the House we gained a…seat…(Democrat) Kurt Granburg’s replacement (Republican John Cavaletto) is pro-life (while the retiring incumbent wasn’t).

Rivera told of the loss of Aaron Shock’s pro-life vote when he moved to Congress, in Naperville Darlene Senger is pro-life, pro-family (while current incumbent Joe Dunn wasn’t a solid vote).

“We’re actually going into Springfield in better shape.

Except for the new Senate leaders.

Rivera pointed out that new Senate President John Cullerton is “very smart. He’s more dangerous in my opinion than Jones was.

With regard to Senate Republicans, Rivera reported that of the 22, only one is pro-choice.

She is Christine Radogno, the newly-elected Senate GOP Leader.

“She got both of our senators,” McHenry County Right to Life godmother Irene Napier observed.

(The third area senator, Kane County’s Chris Lauzen, seconded Kirk Dillard’s nomination.)

When someone asked how she knew, Rivera explained that the vote

“is secret, but it’s not secret, secret.”

Two GOP senators cast “present” votes.

The vote of one, former GOP gubernatorial aspirant Bill Brady of Bloomington, elicited this comment:

“At least he didn’t go with her.”

Rivera explained that Radogno’s challenger in the leadership fight, Dillard,

“did a commercial saying nice things about Obama,”

which hurt him in the contest. Dillard is pro-life.

In the top photo Bonnie Quirke of Libertyville can be seen asking a question. Crystal Lake Paul Weyna is standing in the background.

Below is a head shot of Ralph Rivera. A smiling Irene Napier is below right.

Finally, there is a shot of part of the crowd.
